For high voltage SiC bipolar devices, carrier lifetime is an important parameter, and for optimization of device performance, we need to control distribution of the carrier lifetime in a wafer. So far, there have been limited systems for depth-resolved carrier lifetime measurements without cross sectional cut. In this study, we adopted a free carrier absorption technique and made local overlapping of the probe laser light with excitation laser light to develop depth-resolved carrier lifetime measurements. We named the developed system a microscopic FCA system and demonstrated measurement results for samples with and without intentional carrier lifetime distribution.

A single intravenous injection of 0.1 mg of heat-killed Bacillus Calmette Guérin (BCG) in 0.1 ml of Bayol F produced an accumulation of activated alveolar macrophages (BCG induced). Cells were collected 3.5–4.0 wk after injection. Phospholipases A and three lysosomal marker enzymes (acid phosphatase, ß-glucuronidase, and lysozyme) were measured in homogenates, and the distribution of the phospholipases A and lysosomal, mitochondrial, and microsomal marker enzymes were examined after sucrose gradient centrifugation of a postnuclear (1,000 g) supernatant. Homogenates of normal and BCG-induced macrophages contained phospholipases A1 and A2 which had optimal activity at pH 4.0 in the presence of 2.0 mM ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA). These activities were inhibited 50–70% by 2.0 mM CaCl2. Homogenates of BCG-induced macrophages had specific activities of ß-glucuronidase, acid phosphatase, and lysozyme, which were increased 1.5- to 3.0-fold over the controls, whether expressed as activity per mg protein or activity per 107 cells. The specific activities of the phospholipases A, on the other hand, were consistently lower than those of the control. Distribution of the phospholipases A and the lysosomal marker enzymes after sucrose gradient centrifugation suggested that the phospholipases A active at pH 4.0 in the presence of EDTA are of lysosomal origin since: (a) BCG treatment caused a selective increase in the density of particles which contained both the phospholipases A and three lysosomal marker enzymes; and (b) since the density of mitochondria and microsomes were not affected by BCG treatment. The increase in the density of lysosomes seen here may be related to previously described morphologic changes of BCG-induced alveolar macrophages.

A multivariate model is outlined for a distributed respiratory central pattern generator (RCPG) and its afferent control. Oscillatory behavior of the system depends on structure and symmetry of a matrix of phase-switching functions (F omega, phi) that control distribution of central excitation (CE) and inhibition (CI) within the circuit. The matrix diagonal (F omega) controls activation of CI variables as excitatory inputs are altered (e.g., central and afferent contributions to inspiratory off switch); off-diagonal terms (F phi) distribute excitations within the CI system and produce complex eigenvalues at the switching points between inspiration and expiration. For null F phi, phase switchings of saddle equilibria located at end expiration and end inspiration are overdamped all-or-nothing events; graded control of CI is seen for phi > 0. When coupling is significant (phi >> 0), CI dynamics become underdamped, admitting a domain of inputs where chaotic behavior is predictably observed. For the homogeneous RCPG (symmetric F omega, phi), CE oscillations are one-dimensional limit cycles (D = 1) or weakly chaotic (D approximately equal to 1). When perturbations from symmetry are significant, the distributed RCPG becomes partitioned where strongly chaotic oscillations (D > or = 2) and central apnea (D = 0) are seen more frequently. The equations provide means for mapping Silnikov bifurcations that alter the geometry and dimension of the breathing pattern and formalisms for discussing RCPG processing of afferent information.

Prior to Pearl Harbor, few Americans had given any serious and sustained thought to rationing as a form of wartime economic control. The United States was felt to be a land of chronic surplus in which rationing had no place. To be sure, certain industrial raw materials had become scarce under the impact of the defense program early in 1941, and had been subjected to priorities control by the Office of Production Management. But rationing of consumers' goods was not taken very seriously. Mr. Ickes' East Coast gasoline “shortage” of the late summer and early fall of 1941 had evaporated quickly. There were, of course, a few bright young men in the back rooms of Leon Henderson's O.P.A. who knew that strict wartime price control of consumers' goods would eventually necessitate rationing, price increases not being permitted to control distribution of relatively scarce goods. But even in the O.P.A. the immediate pressure of other duties, principally the control of prices of basic raw materials and the preparation of a price control act then being considered by Congress, prevented the creation of any real rationing organization. Pearl Harbor found the United States with no rationing plans, no rationing organization, and no real appreciation of the indispensability of rationing in a genuine all-out war effort.

In the study, novel fabrication processes of functionally-graded (FG) syntactic foams were developed to control distribution of the mechanical properties in the FG foams for highly impact energy absorption. In order to control mechanical properties, the density distributions in FG foams were graded by floating phenomenon of the light-weight micro-balloons in matrix resin during curing process. The density distribution in the foam could be controlled by adjusting the average volume fraction and the turning procedure of the mold before grading the micro-balloons in the foam. The compression tests of the fabricated FG foams suggested that the foams had high absorption of impact energy since the foams collapsed progressively due to the grading of the density distribution.
