Abstract: This essay presents Quintilian as representative of the ancient categories of thought, in contrast to the medieval-modem one which emerged in the generations of Anselm and Abelard. Quintilian works in the first place with an exhaustive dualism of words and res: res span both what is outside the mind and what is taken into the mind, so that for him there is no medieval-modern trichotomy of words, meanings, and things. In the second place, for Quintilian the primary function of the mind is to take the outside world into itself, while in the medieval-modern context the primary function of mind is to make up meanings by which to think about things outside the mind.

Volunteer Motivations

Volunteering extends into almost every facet of life but the circumstances in which it takes place are subject to almost constant change. Historical roots of altruistic, charitable, and campaigning behaviours are still evident, but the importance of different motivations maybe be altering. Organizations involving volunteers seek to understand volunteer motivations and to find better ways to manage volunteers. And yet there is still disagreement as to how far management techniques from paid work are suitable for volunteers. Meanwhile, the reach of government seems ever stronger as volunteering continues to offer ways to affirm what it means to be a participatory citizen and to provide a considerable resource to stretched welfare budgets. This chapter looks at these points with a view to introducing how these challenges shape the chapters that follow.

AbstractDespite a growing literature revealing the presence of millenarian movements in both Theravada and Mahayana Buddhist societies, scholars have been remarkably reluctant to consider the role of messianic beliefs in Buddhist societies. Khruubaa Srivichai (1878–1938) is the most famous monk of northern Thailand and is widely revered as atonbun, or saint. Althoughtonbunhas been depoliticized in the modern context, the term also refers to a savior who is an incarnation of the coming Maitreya Buddha. In 1920 Srivichai was sent under arrest to the capital city of Bangkok to face eight charges. This essay focuses on the charge that he claimed to possess the god Indra's sword. Although this charge has been widely ignored, it was in fact a charge of treason. In this essay, I argue that the treason charge should be understood within the context of Buddhist millenarianism. I note the saint/savior tropes in Srivichai's mytho-biography, describe the prevalence of millenarianism in the region, and detail the political economy of the decade of the 1910s prior to Srivichai's detention. I present evidence to show that the decade was characterized by famine, dislocation, disease, and other disasters of both natural and social causes. Such hardships would have been consistent with apocalyptic omens in the Buddhist repertoire portending the advent of Maitreya. Understanding Srivichai in this millenarian context helps to explain both the hopes of the populace and the fears of the state during that tumultuous decade.

We present a short history of the Ermakov equation with an emphasis on its discovery by thewest and the subsequent boost to research into invariants for nonlinear systems although recognizing some of the significant developments in the east. We present the modern context of the Ermakov equation in the algebraic and singularity theory of ordinary differential equations and applications to more divers fields. The reader is referred to the previous article (Appl. Anal. Discrete math., 2 (2008), 123-145) for an english translation of Ermakov's original paper.
