Josephine Lomax-Simpson was born on 11 March 1925 into a family with a long tradition of philanthropy. Her grandfather, as a young architect, designed model cottages for workers in Lancashire and at the turn of the century was involved with Lord Leverhulme in the creation of Port Sunlight, Merseyside. This was a similar enterprise for providing the workers in the Lever Brothers industries with decent accommodation and a quality of life.

This chapter describes the outcome of the creation of an eCare Network for frail elderly people in 2005. This was developed over the years as a network of citizens, associations, institutions, and professionals, providing a relational and support ecosystem to frail elderly people. The issue of financial sustainability of the health and social welfare system, in the phase of ongoing demographic revolution, has stimulated the creation of a service that aims to encourage the permanence of frail elderly citizens at home to prevent the onset of frailty or dependency and to improve their quality of life by fighting social isolation through the use of appropriate IT technologies. Community-based voluntary associations also play a key role in the eCare Network for the frail elderly. Finally, in addition to a detailed description of the activities that have been put in place, the service outcomes, innovations, and prospects for further development are illustrated.

This chapter addresses the lack of adequate global infrastructure and the limits imposed on global growth, prosperity, and quality of life. Inadequate infrastructure causes loss of lives, constrains economic progress, and exacerbates climate change. To address the infrastructure gap between what is being constructed and what is genuinely required, the author proposes the creation of a development fund, which will require international collaboration and cooperation, to make available a substantial amount of capital and dedicate it to projects that contribute to the betterment of society. This development fund will not only improve infrastructure but also enhance the quality of many lives.

The purpose of this design concept was to create a stylish diabetic sneaker for individuals with diabetes. The creation of a sneaker design to accommodate diabetic foot conditions is a distinct need in the special footwear industry. Health-related preventive measures that would make a sneaker more comfortable yet fashionable for communities of people of colour who have diabetes were explored. By promoting awareness of preventions that can be undertaken to improve the quality of life for individuals with diabetes, this sneaker design concept, which incorporates health-related features, will help change the direction of sneaker design for individuals with diabetes in the Black community and will enhance their efforts to be more physically active.

In this work, the authors have made an attempt to develop a methodological approach to substantiate the socio-economic efficiency of enterprise performance within an industrial ecosystem in the context of a circular economy. The proposed approach has been verified via a case study of the industrial ecosystem in Novokuznetsk city. Based on the calculations, it has been evidenced that the creation of an industrial ecosystem in the region where the city is located would eliminate area sources of pollution and improve the quality of life of the population, which would advance regional sustainable development and strengthen territorial attractiveness for citizens. Thus, having used the proposed methodology, the prospects for the implementation of circular business models by enterprises in order to increase the efficiency of resource use and balanced and sustainable economic development of a territory have been substantiated. The transition to a circular economy can support the creation of favorable environmental conditions and increase the local community resilience, well-being, and quality of life.

This paper points out an extremely delicate urbarchitectonic-environemental drama, with innumerable global complex situations. There seems to be little hope for improvement in the actual living environment where the condition, in the developmental sense of the term, grows less and less sustainable. Very frequent conferences organized at all quarters of the world, with important declarations and recommendation do not manage to curb the increasingly evident crisis. The author points out to the need to create new action conditions in the Balkans and argues for the creation of a singular coordinated, environmental Atlas of the Balkans, an important document, with bases of key data, so that a better quality of life in micro and macro ambience units could be achieved. Therefore, striving for a different, new reality which will not be based on the declarative principles, but on the scientific research and academic education.

One of the major problems faced by the Algerian economy is sustainability. This is because the economy is essentially hydrocarbon-based. Since 2001, Algeria has adopted a new strategy to strengthen and diversify the economic sector in order to reduce poverty and ensure sustainable development. This study aims to highlight the impact of these reforms on the development and the level of well-being. For this purpose, we carried out an econometric study over the period (2001-2013) in order to ascertain the impact of the creation of SMEs on the improvement of the quality of life which is measured in this test by the HDI. We found that the strategy adopted by the Algerian state for the creation and promotion of SMEs in Algeria has a positive impact on the state of development of the country and the level of well-being of the population.

The 1989 Convention of the Rights of the Child, issued by the United Nations, provided a far more detailed and supposedly binding set of conditions and rights than the 1924 Declaration of the Rights of the Child, which would define childhood globally. And yet the dying and injustice and exploitation continue. “The century of the child and beyond” considers the impact of war and conflict on children; the creation of global agencies and organizations designed to provide aid to and advocate for children; health, poverty, and quality of life; child labor and slavery; changes and challenges in education; modern forms of families; and the globalization of children’s culture.

Background: Quality of Life (QoL) questionnaires are used to describe the impact of aphasia on stroke survivors’ life. People with aphasia (PWA) are traditionally excluded from research, potentially leading to a mismatch between the factors chosen in the tools and the realistic needs of PWA. The purpose of this review was to determine the direct involvement of PWA in the creation of QoL and aphasia impact-related questionnaires (AIR-Qs). Methods: A scoping review methodology was conducted by an expert librarian and two independent reviewers on health sciences based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Metanalyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) protocol, through a literature search in five databases: Medline Complete, PubMed, PsychINFO, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Search terms included ‘stroke’, ‘people with aphasia’, ‘communication’, ‘well-being’, and ‘quality of life’. Results: Of 952 results, 20 studies met the eligibility criteria. Of these, only four AIR-Qs studies (20%) were found reporting the direct involvement of PWA, while no QoL tools did so. Evidence showed involvement in the creation phase of AIR-Q, mainly in a consultation role. Conclusions: There is an absence of a framework for conducting and reporting the involvement of PWA in qualitative participatory research studies, which limits effectiveness to promote equitable best practice in aphasia rehabilitation.

Every capable, creative person must be able to create and prove his ideas in every region of Latvia. Development of creativity of the population will increase human capital, which determines the quality of life of the country's population in general, but mainly in the regions. Promoting the development of human capital requires cooperation between the population and educational institutions, the implementation of which presupposes the digitalization of information exchange, the introduction of information platforms, the sharing of knowledge and the recognition of ideas. By developing the creativity of the population, it is possible to promote the advantages of each region, which in Zemgale would be associated mainly with the development of bioeconomy and eco-products and services. One of the tools to promote creativity would be the creation of regional university business incubators, which would encourage the involvement of creative people in the creation of eco-products and services.
