In the past five years increasing concern has been expressed within the medical profession at the wastage of medical manpower arising from the failure fully to utilize the skills of women doctors who are only able, because of domestic commitments, to work part-time.

The proportion of female medical graduates has steadily risen in the past decade. Although it may be argued that men should take on an equal share of the child-rearing and housekeeping roles of the housewife, there is evidence that women doctors are falling behind in their careers because of domestic pressures (Rhodes, 1990). Part-time work is perceived in theory as being a suitable option for women doctors with domestic commitments, but the number who choose this option in practice is surprisingly small. The following study sought to establish what demand there is for part-time training in psychiatry among junior doctors and whether what is on offer meets that demand.

Recent years have brought a reversal in the attitude of the medical profession toward the diagnosis of viral infections. Identification of bacterial pathogens was formerly thought to be faster than identification of viral pathogens. Viral identification was dismissed as being of academic interest or for confirming the presence of an epidemic, because the patient would recover or die before this could be accomplished. In the past 10 years, the goal of virologists has been to present the clinician with a viral identification in a matter of hours. This fast diagnosis has the potential for shortening the patient's hospital stay and preventing the administering of toxic and/or expensive antibiotics of no benefit to the patient.

In 1975, medical neurology is a well established, viable, growing specialty in Canada. There are now almost 250 neurologists scattered across the country, congregated largely in the hospitals associated with our 16 medical schools. Neurology is a major component of the undergraduate curriculum in each of these schools, and the majority of schools are approved for postgraduate training in our specialty. The Royal College has certified an average of 18 new neurologists each year for the past five years. In our hospitals we work closely with our internist and neurosurgical colleagues and we receive the support of highly competent teams of neuropathologists, clinical electrophysiologists and neuroradiologists. We believe that we provide a generally high standard of consultation service to our medical and surgical colleagues. We accept direct responsibility for patients suffering from a host of acute neurological problems, but we accept long term responsibility for very few. We do a great deal of teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In fact, the major role which neurology plays in undergraduate curricula, and the stimulus of postgraduate education, probably have been the two most influential factors shaping the number, work patterns and distribution of Canadian neurologists. Many of us are engaged in clinical investigation, but relatively few medical neurologists in Canada make fundamental research contributions.

For the past two decades, the medical profession and society have debated the definition of death. Some reasonable consensus has been reached on this issue, in theory and in practice. In the last few years, however, a far more important debate has been evolving — the definition of human personhood. Human personhood has been discussed extensively in the past with respect to the abortion question and other issues concerning the beginning of life. More recently, however, the definition of personhood has been raised with respect to termination of treatment decisions at the end of life and, in particular, on the appropriate care of patients in a persistent vegetative state.Our major premise is that consciousness is the most critical moral, legal, and constitutional standard, not for human life itself, but for human personhood. There is nothing highly original in our approach to this particular issue; others have advanced similar arguments in recent years.

Thanatology, the study of death and dying, is a medical specialty of recent establishment. Over the past two or three decades, there has been a marked increased interest in this topic and in the number of articles and books devoted to its discussion. It has been said that this development is due to a lifting of earlier taboos against public discussion and that the medical profession had been remiss in its failure to provide a more open, forthright airing of its experience with death.

Purpose – This exploratory study aims to explore the perceptions and experience of women doctors on working with each other and draw attention to their ‘voice’ on this issue. The equivocal and limited nature of relevant literature piqued our curiosity on how women perceive working with each other in work settings, particularly within the medical profession. Design/methodology/approach – Twelve women doctors within Australian public hospitals were interviewed through semi-structured informal interviews to “voice” their experiences and views on the comforts and discomforts of working with other women doctors. Their responses were compared to literature to determine similarities and uniqueness of their experiences to women in other settings. Findings – Insights from the respondent’s perceptions and experiences highlight several constructive and negative aspects of working alongside women doctors. Social and psychological constructs of being a “woman” and being a “woman doctor” as well as systemic/cultural issues of the medical fraternity formed how the women in this series of interviews perceived and related to the women doctors they worked with. Research limitations/implications – This exploratory provides initial insights into the experiences of women doctors on working with each other. Many themes identified have been explored in other settings. Hospital as a workplace, presents many similar work dynamics when considering the work interactions of women in other settings. This study should be used to drive more rigorous enquiry and a larger sample size. Practical implications – The working relationships women build with each other influence individual careers and organizational outcomes. Understanding the dynamics that improve and hinder the development of constructive work relationships between women can strengthen women-focused managerial and organizational policies and practices. Originality/value – The consolidation of literature coupled with the exploratory insights of this research contributes to a limited depth of existing literature not only in the medical profession, but in other industries and settings as well.

The academic literacy among students development problem, which includes academic reading, academic writing, and academic performance, becomes relevant in the Republic of Kazakhstan, in the system of higher and postgraduate education. PhD students in the field of pedagogy study the basic discipline "Pedagogy Philosophy and Methodology". This discipline is designed to educate them in public speaking to an audience with their search and experiment results throughout their studies. For a speech to the audience, students prepare a scientific report. Report (scientific), researcher public presentation, which is a summary of his scientific search results, design, experiment. The purpose, structure and content of the discipline allows the teacher to systematize didactic presentations in six areas and use them in lectures and seminars. Over the past ten years, these presentations have contributed to the deeper understanding and assimilation by PhD students of the pedagogy philosophical and methodological foundations, and the pedagogical research methodological tools.

The apathy of the public (including the medical profession) in regard to the fact that measles can be a dangerous disease has been a concern of mine for the past few years (Pediatrics, 34:438, 1964). Because of that apathy, a mass immunization campaign never occurred and we had unnecessary morbidity and mortality. Routine immunization is now with us; the incidence of measles has finally declined. But the apathy has continued, and since immunity is far from universal, new epidemics are being forecast.

Despite numerous attempts over the past few decades to prepare the U.S. workforce for the increasing challenges of a global economy, educators hear the same complaints from industry about how difficult it is to find highly skilled workers. The growing need to have a higher level of education and different knowledge, skills, and attitudes than in the past brought on by globalization makes the task of preparing workers for tomorrow's workplace even more daunting. Whatever the reason for dropping out, many young people have clearly not responded to the attempt to educate them through full-time schooling, no matter how innovative the program. This chapter argues that more adolescents can be educated in a school system that no longer emphasizes full-time schooling but instead combines part-time school with part-time real-world work experience. To carry out such an approach, it may be time to expand our horizons in the search for solutions, and we can find some guidance in a rather unexpected place, the work of Soviet educator Anton Semyonovich Makarenko. Makarenko's success in training young people to become productive workers includes several concepts and methods that may be useful in improving today's workforce education system.
