A retrospective analysis of the violent incident forms returned over a one year period in a psychiatric hospital recorded 283 incidents involving 144 patients. Almost all were of a petty nature, none leading to lasting injuries. Compared with the average daily in-patient population, offending patients were more likely to be male, to be less than 45 years old, and to have a diagnosis of schizophrenia.

The essay investigates the phenomenon of laziness by first analyzing the opposition between laziness and the good. Both utility and the good make reference to labor. This opposition between labor and laziness is pivotal in Oblomov, Ivan Goncharov’s famous novel written in 1859. It marks a radical transition from a feudal paradigm to a capitalistic one. The two main characters in the novel are Ilya Ilyich Oblomov, a Russian, and Andrey Ivanovich Stolz, a German, who together seem to personify the contradiction between laziness and labor. But the purpose of the essay is to deconstruct that opposition. In this connection, one can cite Kazimir Malevich, who maintained that laziness is the Mother of Perfection and is always unconsciously inherent in the conscious intent to work. Analysis of the Latin concepts of otium and negotium indicates that the laziness/labor opposition may be deconstructed as a dialectic between labor and its opposite. In other words, laziness does not stand in contradiction to labor but is instead its inseparable dialectical other. In the last part of the essay, the article considers the thinking of Anatoly Peregud, a poet who spent almost all his life in a psychiatric hospital. According to Peregud, Lenin derived his pseudonym from the Russian linguistic root “len” (laziness) in order to make laziness central to communism. For his part, Lenin saw Oblomov as an emblem of the main obstacle standing in the way of communism.

Abstract Introduction Because of the ongoing discussion of imageless navigation in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), its advantages and disadvantages were evaluated in a large patient cohort. Methods This retrospective analysis included 2464 patients who had undergone TKA at a high-volume university arthroplasty center between 2012 and 2017. Navigated and conventional TKA were compared regarding postoperative mechanical axis, surgery duration, complication rates, one-year postoperative patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) (WOMAC and EQ-5D indices), and responder rates as defined by the criteria of the Outcome Measures in Rheumatology and Osteoarthritis Research Society International consensus (OMERACT-OARSI). Results Both navigated (1.8 ± 1.6°) and conventional TKA (2.1 ± 1.6°, p = 0.002) enabled the exact reconstruction of mechanical axis. Surgery duration was six minutes longer for navigated TKA than for conventional TKA (p < 0.001). Complication rates were low in both groups with comparable frequencies: neurological deficits (p = 0.39), joint infection (p = 0.42 and thromboembolic events (p = 0.03). Periprosthetic fractures occurred more frequently during conventional TKA (p = 0.001). One-year PROMs showed excellent improvement in both groups. The WOMAC index was statistically higher for navigated TKA than for conventional TKA (74.7 ± 19.0 vs. 71.7 ± 20.7, p = 0.014), but the increase was not clinically relevant. Both groups had a similarly high EQ-5D index (0.23 ± 0.24 vs. 0.26 ± 0.25, p = 0.11) and responder rate (86.5% [256/296] vs. 85.9% [981/1142], p = 0.92). Conclusion Both methods enable accurate postoperative leg alignment with low complication rates and equally successful PROMs and responder rates one year postoperatively. Level of evidence III. Retrospective cohort study.

Abstract We studied recruitment and dispersal of White-tailed Ptarmigan (Lagopus leucurus) breeding in naturally fragmented alpine habitats at four study sites in Colorado from 1987–1998. Almost all recruitment for both sexes, particularly females, was of birds produced outside local populations and also external to nearby studied populations. Populations were more dependent on female recruitment than on male recruitment to sustain them, and patterns of recruitment were not correlated with local survival of adults or production of young the previous year, except at one site for females. Over 95% of recruits were yearlings. Breeding dispersal of adults, an infrequent but regular event, was also important to inter-population connectivity. Our data for multiple populations allowed us to describe movement patterns among populations to assess consistency with conditions required for a rescue system. After widespread reproductive failure in one year, we expected all populations the next year would have low recruitment due to a reduced supply of recruits produced in the region. Recruitment was low, but impact varied among populations. We conducted an over-winter study of radio-marked offspring to determine possible influences of winter site location and relatives on recruitment patterns. Contrary to expectation, offspring remained on or near breeding sites in winter, but were not located near their mothers or siblings. Recruitment location was related to winter site location. White-tailed Ptarmigan exhibit a well developed capacity for external recruitment that allows them to persist in small populations with stochastic conditions for breeding and survival. Extensive external recruitment may be a general pattern for birds.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Hemangiomas are the commonest vascular tumors during childhood. In 2008, the effect of propranolol for treating capillary hemangiomas was demonstrated. Other similar results followed, showing that it rapidly reduces lesion volume. The objective here was to evaluate children and adolescents with hemangiomas that were treated with propranolol. DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective study, conducted in a children's hospital. METHODS : Patients aged 0-19 years with or without previous treatment, who were treated between January 2009 and December 2010, were included. The response was assessed by comparing the lesion appearance between the start of treatment and the last consultation. We considered partial or complete responses as the response to treatment. RESULTS : Sixty-nine patients with a median follow-up of 11 months (mean age: 31 months) were included. Of these, 58 patients were recently diagnosed and 11 had had previous treatment. A response (partial or complete) was seen in 60 patients (87%). Among the capillary hemangioma cases, responses were seen in 50 out of 53 (94%), while in other lesion types, it was 10 out of 16 (63%) (P = 0.3; chi-square). Responses in patients less than one year of age were seen in 37 out of 38 (97%), whereas in those over one year of age, in 23 out of 31 (74%) (P = 0.4; chi-square). Side effects were uncommon and mild. CONCLUSIONS: Propranolol seemed to be effective for treatment of hemangiomas in children and adolescents, and not just in the proliferative stage, with responses in almost all the patients.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand how teachers, nurses and engineers view the use of scholarly skills, such as research and critical thinking, in occupational practice and what implications this understanding may have for (especially) teacher education. Design/methodology/approach – Engineers, nurses and teachers who had worked for at least one year after their education was interviewed (telephone interviews). Four interviews from each category were made in this exploratory study. Findings – Few of the interviewees spontaneously connect their research methods training or other elements of scientific thinking in their education to everyday work practice, but all give examples of systematic, reflective and critical elements as features present in the occupational context. Almost all also view the final thesis work done in their respective programmes as a gratifying experience. Further, they describe the freedom and independence they have in their choice of research question and form of work as appealing and encouraging. Research limitations/implications – The study is exploratory and the results should be used to develop ideas about how to improve scholarly/scientific training in profession-oriented higher education programmes. Practical implications – This paper explore ways to understand and further develop the teaching of scholarly/scientific attitudes and ways of thinking in profession-oriented university programmes. Social implications – Scholarly skills such as critical thinking, analytical skills and awareness of different perspectives are important in all professions. How to design education to optimize such skills is important for people and society. Originality/value – The value of the study is that it is a try to use experiences from different fields to improve the generic scholarly aspects of professional education (especially teacher education).

SummaryThe programme in an intensive rehabilitation unit in a large psychiatric hospital is described. Features include the use of non-medical staff as primary therapists, the use of a mini-bus to facilitate regular visits by patients to their home areas, the inclusion of the mini-bus driver on weekly staff conferences, the use of sociodrama, the re-organization of hospital money payments to patients, the promotion of relations with community-based facilities through occasional ‘teach-in’ days, and a special liaison social worker providing intensive follow-up after discharge. Rehabilitation was prolonged (average stay about one year) and about half of those selected for rehabilitation from the long-stay wards were discharged. Follow-up showed that these patients benefited from discharge, in spite of a relatively high incidence of psychopathology and of social problems. Those transferred back to long-stay wards showed increased institutionalization.

Abstract: Flood events on Wednesday, September 26, 2018, in several sub-districts in the city of Padang showed different conditions with the Indonesian region in general which were in normal to drier conditions. One year earlier, precisely on September 9, 2017, there were floods in almost all areas of the city of Padang. This study aims to determine the atmospheric conditions during flood events from the climatological and meteorological side. The data used are monthly rainfall and a monthly number of Rainy Days (HH) from 1981-2018 from the Minangkabau Meteorological Station, as well as Himawari-8 Weather Satellite data. Satellite data is processed using Satellite Animation and Interactive Diagnosis (SATAID) software to obtain cloud cover analysis, cloud growth activities, and atmospheric lability levels. September 2017 and September 2018 are in the nature of normal rain with a percentage of 101% and 88%. The increase in the amount of rainfall in August 2017 to September 2017 is not significant at 27 mm compared to August 2018 to September 2018 which is significant at 148 mm. The number of rainy days in September 2017 and 2018 were 24 and 23 respectively, which showed that almost every day there was rain in those months. The meteorological analysis shows that there is convective cloud growth activity in the Padang area which is characterized by an unstable level of atmospheric stability which has the potential for moderate to heavy rainfall.

Objectives Recent French data describing real-life compression stocking use are lacking. This study aimed to describe the actual situation for patients who were prescribed compression stockings by their general practitioner and to assess annual treatment costs from a societal perspective. Methods A retrospective analysis using Disease Analyzer database data from 6349 adults with at least one compression stocking prescription between July 2009 and June 2010. Results Mean patient age was 58 years, and 72.3% of patients were women. Seven out of 10 patients received only a single compression stocking prescription over one year. The estimated mean annual per patient cost was 152.2 ± 100.7 Euros. Conclusion Most patients received only a single compression stocking prescription during one year. General practitioners prescribing compression stockings more often may have a better understanding of venous disease and may manage their patients differently. Although more expensive, this approach may be one which should be accepted more widely.

Chimeric hydra were produced by making use of a strain (nf-1) which lacks interstitial cells, nerve cells and nematocytes. This strain arises by spontaneous loss of interstitial cells from its parental strain (sf-1) (Sugiyama & Fujisawa, 1978). Reintroduction of interstitial cells from other strains into nf-1 leads to the creation of chimeric strains that consisted of epithelial cells derived from strain sf-1 and interstitial cells and their derivatives (nerves and nematocytes) from other strains. In chimeras, interstitial or epithelial cells apparently maintain very stable cell lineages; no indication was obtained that suggested interstitial cell differentiation into epithelial cells or dedifferentiation in the opposite direction during the long courses of chimera cultures (up to one year). Developmental characters of chimeras were examined and compared to those of the epithelial cell (sf-1) and the interstitial cell donors. Almost all of the chimera's characters examined (growth rate, budding rate, tentacle numbers, polyp size, regenerative capacity, etc.) closely resembled those of the epithelial cell donor, but not of the interstitial cell donors. This suggests that epithelial cells, rather than interstitial or nerve cells, are the primary determinant of most, if not all, of hydra developmental characters.
