The 2019 SEG Annual Meeting featured a variety of student activities, such as the SEG/ExxonMobil Student Education Program and the SEG/Chevron Student Leadership Symposium (SLS). As president of the State University of Rio de Janeiro Geophysical Society (an SEG student chapter), I was invited to participate in SLS to learn more about leadership and communication.

The text seeks the understanding of the reform of the state apparatus in Brazil and the resulting reforms of republican institutions and the regulatory processes and control of society in a frightening globalized context. Este texto é parte da pesquisa desenvolvida e defendida junto ao Programa de Pós-Graduação Stricto Sensu em Geografia pela Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Paraná. A pesquisa teve o seguinte título: “A unidade de perspectivas entre a geografia e a cartografia medievais: paralelos com as artes visuais”. Contudo, no capítulo I, buscou-se conhecer e compreender a Geografia (e a Cartografia) produzida na Antiguidade Clássica. Desse modo, na integralidade da pesquisa foi possível compreender alguns traços do pensamento geográfico e do cartográfico greco-romano, e comparar as variações conceituais e metodológicas em relação ao conhecimento geográfico e cartográfico produzidos na Idade Média. Sobre a Antiguidade Clássica, evidentemente, os pensadores gregos e romanos não foram os únicos, nem os primeiros, a produzir um conhecimento geográfico (e cartográfico), mas certamente, foram eles os primeiros a melhor sistematizar tais conhecimentos.AbstractThis text is part of the research developed and defended at the Graduate Program Stricto Sensu in Geography from the State University of Western Paraná. The research had the following title: "The unity of outlook between geography and medieval cartography: parallel with the visual arts." However, in Chapter I , I tried to know and understand the geography ( and Cartography ) produced in Classical Antiquity . Thus, in the whole of the research was possible to understand some aspects of geographical thought and the Greco-Roman cartographic, and compare the conceptual and methodological changes in relation to geographic and cartographic knowledge produced in the Middle Ages. On Classical Antiquity, of course, the Greek and Roman thinkers were not the only, nor the first, producing a geographical knowledge (and mapping), but certainly they were the first ones to better systematize such knowledge.

RESUMO: O presente trabalho objetiva abordar, analisar e discutir uma significativa experiência de ensino e aprendizagem adquirida em uma oficina pedagógica, no âmbito do Curso de Pedagogia da Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense (UENF), no bojo do Centro de Educação a Distância do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (CEDERJ). Tal atividade foi concretizada por professores, tutores e alunos das disciplinas História na Educação 1 e História na Educação 2 do curso supracitado. A partir das referências de diferentes pesquisadores do campo do Ensino de História e da Educação, discorremos em um momento inicial acerca da organização e estruturação da Oficina, para posteriormente tratarmos da concretização da atividade em si pelos estudantes. A Oficina muito contribuiu para a reflexão acerca das práticas pedagógicas e para uma maior aproximação entre docentes, tutores e estudantes, bem como oportunizou pensamentos acerca das diferentes tecnologias e outros materiais que podem ser empregadas no ensino de História. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: oficina pedagógica; ensino de História; educação a distância; curso de Pedagogia. ABSTRACT: The present work aims at addressing, analyzing and discussing a significant experience of teaching and learning acquired in a pedagogical workshop, within the course of pedagogy of the State University of the North Fluminense (UENF), in the Centre of Distance Education of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CEDERJ). Such activity was accomplished by teachers, tutors and students of the disciplines History in Education 1 and History in Education 2 of the aforementioned course. From the references of different researchers of the field of History Teaching and Education, we have come at an initial moment about the organization and structuring of the workshop, to subsequently embrace the realization of the activity itself by the students. The workshop contributed greatly to reflect on pedagogical practices and for a closer approximation among teachers, tutors and students, as well as it allowed to think the different technologies and other materials that can be employed in the History teaching. KEYWORDS: Pedagogical workshop; History teaching; distance education; Pedagogy course.

AbstractThis paper investigates how students at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), one of the first Brazilian universities to adopt race-based quotas for admissions, interpret racial categories used as eligibility criteria. Considering the perspectives of students is important to understand the workings of affirmative action policies because UERJ's quotas require applicants to classify themselves. Students' interpretations of those categories often diverge from the interpretations intended by people who shaped the policy. Students' perspectives are formed by everyday experiences with categorisation and by their self-assessment as legitimate beneficiaries of quotas. In contrast, the policies were designed according to a new racial project, where black consciousness-raising and statistics played an important role.

The purpose of this study is to identify the problems faced by the supervisors in supervising the students to write their thesises. The study conducted in the State University of Jakarta in August 2012 with the population of all thesis supervisors. The samples were appointed incidental sampling technique and the data were collected by using questionnaire to be analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings show, (1) the supervisors mostly find problems in assisting the students in writing Chapter I and developing research instrument, (2) computer application can be utilized to assist the students to develop the research instruments but the program is to be designed. This study provides some suggestions to the students, thesis supervisors, and the Department to overcome the identified problems.
