Abstract A detailed analysis of the complex life cycle of Hurricane Juan (in 2003) is undertaken to elucidate the structures and forcings that prevailed over the period leading up to the hurricane’s landfall in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Despite the presence of easterly wave precursors, Hurricane Juan’s initial development is shown to occur in a baroclinic environment beneath a low-latitude potential vorticity streamer. This feature interacts with a lower-level shear line as the incipient vortex begins to effectively focus ascent and convection. The system undergoes a slow tropical transition over a period of several days as the deep-layer shear over the developing storm decreases. The hurricane is repeatedly perturbed by subsynoptic-scale waves traveling along the leading edge of a large upstream trough. However, Hurricane Juan maintains its tropical structure despite its relatively high formation latitude (28°N) and its northward trajectory. The unusual persistence of the storm’s tropical nature as it propagates northward is of primary interest in this study. In particular, the role of persistent ridging along the east coast of North America is investigated both in high-resolution analyses for Hurricane Juan and in a compositing framework. Dynamic tropopause, quasigeostrophic, and modified Eady model diagnostics are used to elucidate the interactions between Hurricane Juan and this amplified midlatitude flow. Given the strength and persistence of the anomalous ridge–trough couplet both in the case diagnosis and in the composite fields, the study concludes that the presence of prestorm, high-amplitude ridging along the east coast likely reinforced by diabatic ridging downshear of the storm itself produces an environment both dynamically and thermodynamically conducive to the high-latitude landfall of hurricanes still in the tropical phase.

The Westech-Orion Joint Venture holds onshore Petroleum Exploration Permit 38329 and offshore PEPs 38325, 38326 and 38333 in the East Coast Basin, New Zealand. The Joint Venture holds 24,117 km2 covering Hawkes Bay and the Wairarapa shelf.The Westech-Orion Joint Venture has drilled six exploratory wells and five appraisal wells in the onshore East Coast Basin over a two year period. All wells encountered significant gas shows, with two wells discovering hydrocarbons in potentially commercial volumes. Each well was drilled on the crest of a seismically mapped structure, characterised by asymmetric folding over a northwest dipping thrust fault.Prior to this drilling program, the reservoir potential of the Wairoa area was inferred to be dominated by turbidite sandstones of the Tunanui and Makaretu formations (Mid-Late Miocene). The new wells show that the Mid Miocene and parts of the Early and Late Miocene pinch out across the 'Wairoa High'.One of the primary onshore reservoirs is the Kauhauroa Limestone (Early Miocene), a bryozoan-dominated, tightly packed and cemented limestone with dominantly fracture porosity. The other primary reservoir is the Tunanui Sandstone (Mid Miocene), which in well intersections to date comprises medium-thickly bedded sandstone, with net sand typically 40%. The sands have high lithic content, and are moderately sorted and subangular-subrounded.Abnormally high formation pressures were encountered in all wells, ranging up to 3,400 psi at 1,000 m. Crestal pressure gradients commonly exceed 70% of the lithostatic pressure gradient, despite the relative proximity to outcrop. The overpressure may reflect relatively young uplift of fossil pressures, with insufficient time for pressure equilibration within a generally overpressured system.The prospectivity of the area has been highgraded by recent maturation and reservoir studies in Hawkes Bay and by gas discoveries in Westech-Orion wells onshore northern Hawkes Bay. Maturation studies identified nine kitchen areas with oil migration commencing in the Late Miocene. Seismic stratigraphy and correlation with onshore wells identified offshore submarine fan deposits of Eocene, Early Miocene, Mid Miocene and Pliocene age.A 594 km2 exploration 3D seismic survey was acquired in Hawke Bay in April 1999, and 685 km of 2D seismic were acquired in March 2000. Preliminary interpretation of the 3D survey has yielded five prospects, each covering 20–90 km2. One prospect is a lowstand fan identified by stacked mounding and bidirectional downlap, correlated with the onshore Mid Miocene Tunanui Sandstone. High amplitude seismic events of Mid-Late Miocene ages are inferred to be pulses of submarine fan development, in places associated with direct hydrocarbon indicators (DHIs). High amplitude seismic events in the Pliocene include a package of high amplitude seismic reflectors interpreted as structurally trapped DHI truncated by a major unconformity.

Shahbazpur structure is located in the southern Part of the central deep basin in the Hatia trough, where lie all the largest Gas fields of Bangladesh. A method is established to delineate the structural mapping precisely by interpreting four 2D seismic lines that are acquired over Shahbazpur structure. Moreover direct hydrocarbon indicators (DHI) related attributes are analyzed for further confirmation for presence of hydrocarbon. To do this synthetic seismogram generation, seismic to well tie, velocity modelling and depth conversion are performed. A limited number of seismic attributes functions that are available in an academic version of Petrel software are applied to analyze attributes. Seismic attribute analyses that are used in this interpretation mainly are associated to bright spot detection. Presence of bright spots or high amplitude anomaly over the present Shahbazpur structure, reservoir zone are observed. This signature will play a very important role in next well planning on the same structure to test the shallow accumulation of hydrocarbon. For better understanding of this shallow reserve, it is suggested to acquire 3D seismic data over Shahbazpur structure which will help to evaluate the hydrocarbon accumulation and to identify gas migration pathways. Eight aeromagnetic traverses were flown recently across the Red Sea at the latitude of about 21°. The data showed a high-amplitude axial trough anomaly trending northeasterly that terminated near the northern edge of the survey area. A second high-amplitude anomaly was observed to trend northwesterly beginning immediately west of the 1000 m bathymetric contour. Depth estimates to the upper surface of the very magnetic rock units was estimated to be about 2 km. The three deep hot brine areas seemed to be related to the steep gradients of the large axial trough anomaly. A third low-amplitude anomaly trending northwest into the Red Sea from the land area south of Jeddah appeared to have a much deeper source. This anomaly possesses the same trend as numerous dykes, faults, and magnetic trends observed in the Arabian shield rocks.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between oral language, literacy skills, age, and dialect density (DD) of African American children residing in two different geographical regions of the United States (East Coast and Midwest). Method Data were obtained from 64 African American school-age children between the ages of 7 and 12 years from two geographic regions. Children were assessed using a combination of standardized tests and narrative samples elicited from wordless picture books. Bivariate correlation and multiple regression analyses were used to determine relationships to and relative contributions of oral language, literacy, age, and geographic region to DD. Results Results of correlation analyses demonstrated a negative relationship between DD measures and children's literacy skills. Age-related findings between geographic regions indicated that the younger sample from the Midwest outscored the East Coast sample in reading comprehension and sentence complexity. Multiple regression analyses identified five variables (i.e., geographic region, age, mean length of utterance in morphemes, reading fluency, and phonological awareness) that accounted for 31% of the variance of children's DD—with geographic region emerging as the strongest predictor. Conclusions As in previous studies, the current study found an inverse relationship between DD and several literacy measures. Importantly, geographic region emerged as a strong predictor of DD. This finding highlights the need for a further study that goes beyond the mere description of relationships to comparing geographic regions and specifically focusing on racial composition, poverty, and school success measures through direct data collection.

Large areas of North Island hill country are producing below potential as a result of low fertility and poor pasture composition. Removal of undesirable species and replacement with a higher producing pasture is essential for increased productivity but is difficult to achieve. A development programme is described where the use of glyphosate in close association with oversowing and stock management has allowed rapid pasture establishment, marked increase in carrying capacity and a quick return on investment. In late September 2018, multiple generations of Chicago’s storied social movements marched through Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood as part of the sold-out, three-day Young Lords Fiftieth Anniversary Symposium hosted by DePaul University—an institution that, alongside Mayor Richard J. Daley’s administration, had played a sizeable role in transforming Lincoln Park into a neighborhood “primed for development.” Students, activists, and community members—from throughout Chicago, the Midwest, the East Coast, and even as far as Texas—converged to celebrate the history of Puerto Ricans in Chicago, the legacies of the Young Lords, and the promises and possibilities of resistance. As Elaine Brown, former chairwoman and minister of information for the Black Panther Party, told participants in the second day’s opening plenary, the struggle against racism, poverty, and gentrification and for self-determination and the general empowerment of marginalized people is a protracted one. “You have living legends among you,” Brown insisted, inviting us to associate as equals with the Young Lords members in our midst. Her plea encapsulated the ethos of that weekend’s celebrations: “If we want to be free, let us live the light of the Lords.”
