This case study images the structural features related to the Naga thrust fault (northeast India) using a combination of multiscale waveform inversion and prestack depth migration (PSDM). The waveform model and the PSDM image complement each other: the former provides a physical-property map (P-wave velocity model) and the latter provides a structural image. The velocity model encompassing the starting model for waveform inversion is constructed using joint inversion of first and reflected traveltimes. The [Formula: see text] data are inverted consecutively in [Formula: see text] bandwidths to yield the final waveform model, which in turn is used for PSDM. The PSDM image and the waveform model are consistent with the lithological interpretation of an inline exploratory well. When interpreted jointly, the PSDM image and the waveform model reveal the presence of a conjugate fault system in the Naga thrust and fold belt.

Thin sand-mud-coal interbedded layers and multiples caused by shallow water pose great challenges to conventional 3D multi-channel seismic techniques used to detect the deeply buried reservoirs in the Qiuyue field. In 2017, a dense ocean-bottom seismometer (OBS) acquisition program acquired a four-component dataset in East China Sea. To delineate the deep reservoir structures in the Qiuyue field, we applied a full-waveform inversion (FWI) workflow to this dense four-component OBS dataset. After preprocessing, including receiver geometry correction, moveout correction, component rotation, and energy transformation from 3D to 2D, a preconditioned first-arrival traveltime tomography based on an improved scattering integral algorithm is applied to construct an initial P-wave velocity model. To eliminate the influence of the wavelet estimation process, a convolutional-wavefield-based objective function for the preprocessed hydrophone component is used during acoustic FWI. By inverting the waveforms associated with early arrivals, a relatively high-resolution underground P-wave velocity model is obtained, with updates at 2.0 km and 4.7 km depth. Initial S-wave velocity and density models are then constructed based on their prior relationships to the P-wave velocity, accompanied by a reciprocal source-independent elastic full-waveform inversion to refine both velocity models. Compared to a traditional workflow, guided by stacking velocity analysis or migration velocity analysis, and using only the pressure component or other single-component, the workflow presented in this study represents a good approach for inverting the four-component OBS dataset to characterize sub-seafloor velocity structures.

Abstract. We present a high-resolution P-wave velocity model of the sedimentary cover and the uppermost basement until ~ 3 km depth obtained by full-waveform inversion of multichannel seismic data acquired with a 6 km-long streamer in the Alboran Sea (SE Iberia). The inherent non-linearity of the method, especially for short-offset, band-limited seismic data as this one, is circumvented by applying a data processing/modeling sequence consisting of three steps: (1) data re-datuming by back-propagation of the recorded seismograms to the seafloor; (2) joint refraction and reflection travel-time tomography combining the original and the re-datumed shot gathers; and (3) FWI of the original shot gathers using the model obtained by travel-time tomography as initial reference. The final velocity model shows a number of geological structures that cannot be identified in the travel-time tomography models or easily interpreted from seismic reflection images alone. A sharp strong velocity contrast accurately defines the geometry of the top of the basement. Several low-velocity zones that may correspond to the abrupt velocity change across steeply dipping normal faults are observed at the flanks of the basin. A 200–300 m thick, high-velocity layer embedded within lower velocity sediment may correspond to evaporites deposited during the Messinian crisis. The results confirm that the combination of data re-datuming and joint refraction and reflection travel-time inversion provides reference models that are accurate enough to apply full-waveform inversion to relatively short offset streamer data in deep water settings starting at field-data standard low frequency content of 6 Hz.

We have extended prestack parsimonious Kirchhoff depth migration for 2D, two-component, reflected elastic seismic data for a P-wave source recorded at the earth’s surface. First, we separated the P-to-P reflected (PP-) waves and P-to-S converted (PS-) waves in an elastic common-source gather into P-wave and S-wave seismograms. Next, we estimated source-ray parameters (source p values) and receiver-ray parameters (receiver p values) for the peaks and troughs above a threshold amplitude in separated P- and S-wavefields. For each PP and PS reflection, we traced (1) a source ray in the P-velocity model in the direction of the emitted ray angle (determined by the source p value) and (2) a receiver ray in the P- or S-velocity model back in the direction of the emergent PP- or PS-wave ray angle (determined by the PP- or PS-wave receiver p value), respectively. The image-point position was adjusted from the intersection of the source and receiver rays to the point where the sum of the source time and receiver-ray time equaled the two-way traveltime. The orientation of the reflector surface was determined to satisfy Snell’s law at the intersection point. The amplitude of a P-wave (or an S-wave) was distributed over the first Fresnel zone along the reflector surface in the P- (or S-) image. Stacking over all P-images of the PP-wave common-source gathers gave the stacked P-image, and stacking over all S-images of the PS-wave common-source gathers gave the stacked S-image. Synthetic examples showed acceptable migration quality; however, the images were less complete than those produced by scalar reverse-time migration (RTM). The computing time for the 2D examples used was about 1/30 of that for scalar RTM of the same data.

In 1980, Aki and Richards published linearized formulations of the Zoeppritz equations from 1919. From then on, many flavors and variations of the P-P reflection mode so-called amplitude variation with offset (AVO) equations have been published and used. Assuming the earth is isotropic, these equations are used day in and day out in the industry for reservoir characterization and to find oil and gas in the subsurface. Some publications have shown that using the P-P and P-S reflections in a joint inversion can increase the accuracy of the inverted parameters. Technically, however, there has been little divergence from the linearized Zoeppritz equations until lately when full-waveform inversion started to gain traction, initially for velocity model estimation and imaging and more recently applied to reservoir characterization.

<p>Acoustic full-waveform inversion (FWI), or waveform tomography, involves use of both phase and amplitude of the recorded compressional waves to obtain a high-resolution P-wave velocity model of the propagation medium. Recent theoretical and computing advances now allow the application of this highly non-linear technique to field data. This led to common use of the FWI for industrial purposes related to reservoir imaging, physical properties of rocks, and fluid flow. Application of FWI in the academic domain has, so far, been limited, mostly because of the lack of adequate seismic data. While refraction seismic datasets include large source-receiver offsets that are useful to find a suitable starting velocity model through traveltime tomography, these acquisitions rarely reach the high density of receivers necessary for waveform tomography. On the other hand, multichannel seismic (MCS) reflection data acquisition has a dense receiver spacing but only modern long-streamer data have offsets that, in some cases, enable constraining subsurface velocities at a significant enough depth to be useful for structural or tectonic purposes.</p><p>In this study, we show how FWI can help decipher the record of a fault activity through time at the Shumagin Gap in Alaska. The MCS data were acquired on RV Marcus G. Langseth during the ALEUT cruise in the summer of 2011 using two 8-km-long seismic streamers and a 6600 cu. in. tuned airgun array. One of the most noticeable reflection features imaged on two profiles is a large, landward-dipping normal fault in the overriding plate; a structural configuration making the area prone to generating both transoceanic and local tsunamis, including from landslides. This fault dips ~40°- 45°, cuts the entire crust and connects to the plate boundary fault at ~35 km depth, near the intersection of the megathrust with the forearc mantle wedge. The fault system reaches the surface at the shelf edge 75 km from the trench, forming the Sanak basin where the record of the recent activity of the fault is not clear. Indeed, contouritic currents tend to be trapped by the topography created by faults, even after they are no longer active.  Erosion surfaces and onlaps from contouritic processes as well as gravity collapses and mass transport deposits results in complex structures that make it challenging to evaluate the fault activity. The long streamers used facilitated recording of refraction arrivals in the target continental slope area, which permitted running streamer traveltime tomography followed by FWI to produce coincident detailed velocity profiles to complement the reflection sections. FWI imaging of the Sanak basin reveals low velocities of mass transport deposits and velocity inversions indicate mechanically weak layers linking some faults to gravity sliding on a décollement. These details question previous interpretation of a present-day active fault. Our goal is to further analyze the behavior of the fault system using the P-wave velocity models from FWI to quantitatively detect fluids and constrain sediment properties.</p>

Full-waveform inversion (FWI) has the potential to obtain an accurate velocity model. Nevertheless, it depends strongly on the low-frequency data and the initial model. When the starting model is far from the real model, FWI tends to converge to a local minimum. Based on a scale separation of the model (into the background model and reflectivity model), reflection waveform inversion (RWI) can separate out the tomography term in the conventional FWI kernel and invert for the long-wavelength components of the velocity model by smearing the reflected wave residuals along the transmission (or “rabbit-ear”) paths. We have developed a new elastic RWI method to build the P- and S-wave velocity macromodels. Our method exploits a traveltime-based misfit function to highlight the contribution of tomography terms in the sensitivity kernels and a sensitivity kernel decomposition scheme based on the P- and S-wave separation to suppress the high-wavenumber artifacts caused by the crosstalk of different wave modes. Numerical examples reveal that the gradients of the background models become sufficiently smooth owing to the decomposition of sensitivity kernels and the traveltime-based misfit function. We implement our elastic RWI in an alternating way. At each loop, the reflectivity model is generated by elastic least-squares reverse time migration, and then the background model is updated using the separated traveltime kernels. Our RWI method has been successfully applied in synthetic and real reflection seismic data. Inversion results demonstrate that the proposed method can retrieve preferable low-wavenumber components of the P- and S-wave velocity models, which are reliable to serve as a starting model for conventional elastic FWI. Also, our method with a two-stage inversion workflow, first updating the P-wave velocity using the PP kernels and then updating the S-wave velocity using the PS kernels, is feasible and robust even when P- and S-wave velocities have different structures.

Imaging 2D multichannel land seismic data can be accomplished effectively by a combination of traveltime inversion and prestack depth migration (PSDM), referred to as unified imaging. Unified imaging begins by inverting the direct-arrival times to estimate a velocity model that is used in static corrections and stacking velocity analysis. The interval velocity model (from stacking velocities) is used for PSDM. The stacked data and the PSDM image are interpreted for common horizons, and the corresponding wide-aperture reflections are identified in the shot gathers. Using the interval velocity model, the stack interpretations are inverted as zero-offset reflections to constrain the corresponding interfaces in depth; the interval velocity model remains stationary. We define a coefficient of congruence [Formula: see text] that measures the discrepancy between horizons from the PSDM image andtheir counterparts from the zero-offset inversion. A value of unity for [Formula: see text] implies that the interpreted and inverted horizons are consistent to within the interpretational uncertainties, and the unified imaging is said to have converged. For [Formula: see text] greater than unity, the interval velocity model and the horizon depths are updated by jointly inverting the direct arrivals with the zero-offset and wide-aperture reflections. The updated interval velocity model is used again for both PSDM and a zero-offset inversion. Interpretations of the new PSDM image are the updated horizon depths. The unified imaging is applied to seismic data from the Naga Thrust and Fold Belt in India. Wide-aperture and zero-offset data from three geologically significant horizons are used. Three runs of joint inversion and PSDM are required in a cyclic manner for [Formula: see text] to converge to unity. A joint interpretation of the final velocity model and depth image reveals the presence of a triangle zone that could be promising for exploration.

Abstract. Imaging via pre-stack depth migration (PSDM) of reflection towed-streamer multichannel seismic (MCS) data at the scale of the whole crust is inherently difficult. This is because the depth penetration of the seismic wavefield is controlled, firstly, by the acquisition design, such as streamer length and air-gun source configuration, and secondly by the complexity of the crustal structure. Indeed, the limited length of the streamer makes the estimation of velocities from deep targets challenging due to the velocity–depth ambiguity. This problem is even more pronounced when processing 2-D seismic data due to the lack of multi-azimuthal coverage. Therefore, in order to broaden our knowledge about the deep crust using seismic methods, we present the development of specific imaging workflows that integrate different seismic data. Here we propose the combination of velocity model building using (i) first-arrival tomography (FAT) and full-waveform inversion (FWI) of wide-angle, long-offset data collected by stationary ocean-bottom seismometers (OBSs) and (ii) PSDM of short-spread towed-streamer MCS data for reflectivity imaging, with the former velocity model as a background model. We present an application of such a workflow to seismic data collected by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and the Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer (IFREMER) in the eastern Nankai Trough (Tokai area) during the 2000–2001 Seize France Japan (SFJ) experiment. We show that the FWI model, although derived from OBS data, provides an acceptable background velocity field for the PSDM of the MCS data. From the initial PSDM, we refine the FWI background velocity model by minimizing the residual move-outs (RMOs) picked in the pre-stack-migrated volume through slope tomography (ST), from which we generate a better-focused migrated image. Such integration of different seismic datasets and leading-edge imaging techniques led to greatly improved imaging at different scales. That is, large to intermediate crustal units identified in the high-resolution FWI velocity model extensively complement the short-wavelength reflectivity inferred from the MCS data to better constrain the structural factors controlling the geodynamics of the Nankai Trough.

We applied an iterative combination of two-dimensional traveltime inversion and amplitude forward modelling to seismic refraction data along a 350 km along-strike profile in the Coast Belt of the southern Canadian Cordillera to determine crust and upper mantle P-wave velocity structure. The crustal model features a thin (0.5–3.0 km) near-surface layer with an average velocity of 4.4 km/s, and upper-, middle-, and lower-crustal strata which are each approximately 10 km thick and have velocities ranging from 6.2 to 6.7 km/s. The Moho appears as a 2 km thick transitional layer with an average depth of 35 km and overlies an upper mantle with a poorly constrained velocity of over 8 km/s. Other interpretations indicate that this profile lies within a collision zone between the Insular superterrane and the ancient North American margin and propose two collision-zone models: (i) crustal delamination, whereby the Insular superterrane was displaced along east-vergent faults over the terranes below; and (ii) crustal wedging, in which interfingering of Insular rocks occurs throughout the crust. The latter model involves thick layers of Insular material beneath the Coast Belt profile, but crustal velocities indicate predominantly non-Insular material, thereby favoring the crustal delamination model. Comparisons of the velocity model with data from the proximate reflection lines show that the top of the Moho transition zone corresponds with the reflection Moho. Comparisons with other studies suggest that likely sources for intracrustal wide-angle reflections observed in the refraction data are structural features, lithological contrasts, and transition zones surrounding a region of layered porosity in the crust.

An efficient Kirchhoff-style prestack depth migration, called “parsimonious” migration, was developed a decade ago for isotropic 2D and 3D media by using measured slownesses to reduce the amount of ray tracing by orders of magnitude. It is conceptually similar to “map” migration, but its implementation has some differences. We have extended this approach to 2D tilted transversely isotropic (TTI) media and illustrated it with synthetic P-wave data. Although the framework of isotropic parsimonious may be retained, the extension to TTI media requires redevelopment of each of the numerical components, calculation of the phase and group velocity for TTI media, development of a new two-point anisotropic ray tracer, and substitution of an initial-angle isotropic shooting ray-trace algorithm for an anisotropic one. The model parameterization consists of Thomsen’s parameters ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) and the tilt angle of the symmetry axis of the TI medium. The parsimonious anisotropic migration algorithm is successfully applied to synthetic data from a TTI version of the Marmousi2 model. The quality of the image improves by weighting the impulse response by the calculation of the anisotropic Fresnel radius. The accuracy and speed of this migration makes it useful for anisotropic velocity model building. The elapsed computing time for 101 shots for the Marmousi2 TTI model is 35 s per shot (each with 501 traces) in 32 Opteron cores.
