We have developed an open source 3D, MATLAB based, resistivity inversion package. The forward solution to the governing partial differential equation is efficiently computed using a second-order finite volume discretization coupled with a preconditioned, biconjugate, stabilized gradient algorithm. Using the analytical solution to a potential field in a homogeneous half space, we evaluate the accuracy of our numerical forward solution and, subsequently, develop a source correction factor that reduces forward modeling errors associated with boundary effects and source electrode singularities. For the inversion algorithm we have implemented an inexact Gauss-Newton solver, with the model update being calculated using a preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithm. The inversion uses a combination of zero and first order Tikhonov regularization. Two synthetic examples demonstrate the usefulness of this code. The first example considers a surface resistivity survey with 3813 measurements. The discretized model space contains 19,040 cells. For this example, the inversion package converges in approximately [Formula: see text] on a [Formula: see text] Pentium 4, with [Formula: see text] of RAM. The second example considers the case of borehole based data acquisition. For this example there were 4704 measurements and 13,200 model cells. The inversion for this example requires [Formula: see text] of computational time.

By computing only the diagonal terms of the volume integral equation forward solution of the 3-D DC resistivity problem, we have achieved a fast forward solution accurate at low to moderate resistivity contrasts. The speed and accuracy of the solution make it practical for use in 2-D or 3-D inversion algorithms. The low‐contrast approximation is particularly well‐suited to the smooth nature of minimum structure inversion, since complete forward solutions may be computationally expensive. By using this approximate 3-D solution as the forward model in an inversion algorithm, and by constraining the resistivities and polarizabilities along any row of cells in the strike direction to be held constant, we effect a fast 2-D resistivity inversion that contains end corrections. Because the low‐contrast solution is inaccurate for cells near the electrodes, we employ a full solution to compute the response of the near‐surface when the near‐surface environment is substantially different from the host rock. This response is stored and used in the iterative resistivity inversion in conjunction with the approximate solution. Once an adequate estimated resistivity model has been found, derivatives from this model are used with Seigel’s formula to compute the inverse solution to the linear polarizability problem in a single iteration.

While proactive geosteering, special inversion algorithms are used to process the readings of logging-while-drilling resistivity tools in real-time and provide oil field operators with formation models to make informed steering decisions. Currently, there is no industry standard for inversion deliverables and corresponding quality indicators because major tool vendors develop their own device-specific algorithms and use them internally. This paper presents the first implementation of vendor-neutral inversion approach applicable for any induction resistivity tool and enabling operators to standardize the efficiency of various geosteering services. The necessity of such universal inversion approach was inspired by the activity of LWD Deep Azimuthal Resistivity Services Standardization Workgroup initiated by SPWLA Resistivity Special Interest Group in 2016. Proposed inversion algorithm utilizes a 1D layer-cake formation model and is performed interval-by-interval. The following model parameters can be determined: horizontal and vertical resistivities of each layer, positions of layer boundaries, and formation dip. The inversion can support arbitrary deep azimuthal induction resistivity tool with coaxial, tilted, or orthogonal transmitting and receiving antennas. The inversion is purely data-driven; it works in automatic mode and provides fully unbiased results obtained from tool readings only. The algorithm is based on statistical reversible-jump Markov chain Monte Carlo method that does not require any predefined assumptions about the formation structure and enables searching of models explaining the data even if the number of layers in the model is unknown. To globalize search, the algorithm runs several Markov chains capable of exchanging their states between one another to move from the vicinity of local minimum to more perspective domain of model parameter space. While execution, the inversion keeps all models it is dealing with to estimate the resolution accuracy of formation parameters and generate several quality indicators. Eventually, these indicators are delivered together with recovered resistivity models to help operators with the evaluation of inversion results reliability. To ensure high performance of the inversion, a fast and accurate semi-analytical forward solver is employed to compute required responses of a tool with specific geometry and their derivatives with respect to any parameter of multi-layered model. Moreover, the reliance on the simultaneous evolution of multiple Markov chains makes the algorithm suitable for parallel execution that significantly decreases the computational time. Application of the proposed inversion is shown on a series of synthetic examples and field case studies such as navigating the well along the reservoir roof or near the oil-water-contact in oil sands. Inversion results for all scenarios confirm that the proposed algorithm can successfully evaluate formation model complexity, recover model parameters, and quantify their uncertainty within a reasonable computational time. Presented vendor-neutral stochastic approach to data processing leads to the standardization of the inversion output including the resistivity model and its quality indicators that helps operators to better understand capabilities of tools from different vendors and eventually make more confident geosteering decisions.

We present a method for determining the elastic parameters of a horizontally stratified medium from its plane‐wave reflectivity. The nonlinear inverse problem is iteratively solved by using a generalized least‐squares formalism. The proposed method uses the (relatively) fast convergence properties of the conjugate gradient algorithm and achieves computational efficiency through analytical solutions for calculating the reference and perturbational wavefields. The solution method is implemented in the frequency‐wave slowness domain and can be readily adapted to various source‐receiver configurations. The behavior of the algorithm conforms to the predictions of generalized least‐squares inverse theory: the inversion scheme yields satisfactory results as long as the correct velocity trends are introduced in the starting model. In practice, the inversion algorithm should be applied first in the precritical region because of the strong nonlinear behavior of postcritical data with respect to velocity perturbations. The suggested inversion strategy consists of first inverting for the density and P‐wave velocity (or P‐wave impedance) by considering plane waves in the low slowness region (near‐normal angles of incidence), then in optimizing for the S‐wave velocity by progressively including contributions from the high slowness region (steep angles of incidence). Numerical experiments performed with noise‐free synthetic data prove that the proposed inversion method satisfactorialy reconstructs the elastic properties of a stratified medium from a limited set of plane‐wave components, at a reasonable computing cost.

This paper studies the use of neural networks as a tuning tool for the gain in Modified Proportional-Integral-Derivative (MPID) control used to control a flexible manipulator. The vibration control gain in the MPID controller has been determined in an empirical way so far. It is a considerable time consuming process because the vibration control performance depends not only on the vibration control gain but also on the other parameters such as the payload, references and PD joint servo gains. Hence, the vibration control gain must be tuned considering the other parameters. In order to find optimal vibration control gain for the MPID controller, a neural network based approach is proposed in this paper. The proposed neural network finds an optimum vibration control gain that minimizes a criteria function. The criteria function is selected to represent the effect of the vibration of the end effector in addition to the speed of response. The scaled conjugate gradient algorithm is used as a learning algorithm for the neural network. Tuned gain response results are compared to results for other types of gains. The effectiveness of using the neural network appears in the reduction of the computational time and the ability to tune the gain with different loading condition.

One main disadvantage of meshfree methods is that their memory requirement and computational cost are much higher than those of the usual finite element method (FEM). This paper presents an efficient and reliable solver for the large sparse symmetric positive definite (SPD) system resulting from the element-free Galerkin (EFG) approach. A compact mathematical model of heat transfer problems is first established using the EFG procedure. Based on the widely used Successive Over-Relaxation–Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient (SSOR–PCG) scheme, a novel solver named FastPCG is then proposed for solving the SPD linear system. To decrease the computational time in each iteration step, a new algorithm for realizing multiplication of the global stiffness matrix by a vector is presented for this solver. The global matrix and load vector are changed in accordance with a special rule and, in this way, a large account of calculation is avoided on the premise of not decreasing the solution's accuracy. In addition, a double data structure is designed to tackle frequent and unexpected operations of adding or removing nodes in problems of dynamic adaptive or moving high-gradient field analysis. An information matrix is also built to avoid drastic transformation of the coefficient matrix caused by the initial-boundary values. Numerical results show that the memory requirement of the FastPCG solver is only one-third of that of the well-developed AGGJE solver, and the computational cost is comparable with the traditional method with the increas of solution scale and order.
