Computation of linear elastic properties from microtomographic images: Methodology and agreement between theory and experiment

Elastic property‐porosity relationships are derived directly from microtomographic images. This is illustrated for a suite of four samples of Fontainebleau sandstone with porosities ranging from 7.5% to 22%. A finite‐element method is used to derive the elastic properties of digitized images. By estimating and minimizing several sources of numerical error, very accurate predictions of properties are derived in excellent agreement with experimental measurements over a wide range of the porosity. We consider the elastic properties of the digitized images under dry, water‐saturated, and oil‐saturated conditions. The observed change in the elastic properties due to fluid substitution is in excellent agreement with the exact Gassmann's equations. This shows both the accuracy and the feasibility of combining microtomographic images with elastic calculations to accurately predict petrophysical properties of individual rock morphologies. We compare the numerical predictions to various empirical, effective medium and rigorous approximations used to relate the elastic properties of rocks to porosity under different saturation conditions.

A micro-CT facility for imaging, visualising and modelling sedimentary rock properties in three dimensions (3D) is described. The facility is capable of acquiring 3D X-ray CT images of full-diameter cores and core plugs at up to 2,0003 voxels with resolutions down to 2μm. This allows the 3D pore-space of a rock to be imaged and, with the aid of SEM, to identify regions of different mineralogy. Computational results are presented which demonstrate that accurate predictions of petrophysical properties can be made directly from the digitised tomographic images. Computations of both formation factor and permeability from micro-tomographic images of Fontainebleau sandstone are shown to be in excellent agreement with experimental measurements over a wide range of porosities. Computed elastic properties for dry and water-saturated conditions are shown to be consistent with the exact Gassmann’s equations and are in excellent agreement with experimental measurements. Experimental measurements of Vp/Vs ratio for cemented sandstone morphologies are very noisy and cannot be used to infer relationships between elastic properties, mineralogy and rock microstructure. Computations on tomographic images show that the Vp/Vs ratio exhibits predictable limiting behavior which holds for any number of solid phases and is insensitive to the manner in which the phases are distributed. This allows the development of more accurate empirical methods for deriving the full velocity-porosity relationship for cemented sands. The results demonstrate the feasibility of combining digitised images with numerical calculations to accurately predict petrophysical properties of individual rock morphologies.

AbstractPorosity is known to play a pivotal role in dictating the functional properties of biomedical scaffolds, with special reference to mechanical performance. While compressive strength is relatively easy to be experimentally assessed even for brittle ceramic and glass foams, elastic properties are much more difficult to be reliably estimated. Therefore, describing and, hence, predicting the relationship between porosity and elastic properties based only on the constitutive parameters of the solid material is still a challenge. In this work, we quantitatively compare the predictive capability of a set of different models in describing, over a wide range of porosity, the elastic modulus (7 models), shear modulus (3 models) and Poisson’s ratio (7 models) of bioactive silicate glass-derived scaffolds produced by foam replication. For these types of biomedical materials, the porosity dependence of elastic and shear moduli follows a second-order power-law approximation, whereas the relationship between porosity and Poisson’s ratio is well fitted by a linear equation.

In this study the effect of local loads applied on a sectorial toroidal shell (pipe bend) is considered. A linear elastic shell theory solution for local loads is first outlined. The solution corresponds to the case of a shell simply supported at the two ends. Detailed displacement and stress results are then given for a specific shell with loadings centred at three positions; the crown circles, the extrados, and the intrados. These results are compared with results for a corresponding cylindrical shell. The paper concludes with a table summarizing results for characteristic displacements and stresses in a number of shells, covering a wide range of geometric parameters.

The governing equations of the flow field which is obtained when a thermoelastic rigid porous medium is struck head-one by a shock wave are developed using the multiphase approach. The one-dimensional version of these equations is solved numerically using a TVD-based numerical code. The numerical predictions are compared to experimental results and good to excellent agreements are obtained for different porous materials and a wide range of initial conditions.

The paper by O'Carrol et al. (1), which addresses the problem of an elastomeric disc indented by a spherical punch, has been evaluated. The sources of disagreement between linear elastic numerical predictions and experimental measurements noted in this paper have been critically examined in the light of finite element forecasts obtained with a package which incorporates finite elasticity effects and incompressibility.

Low carbon steel (usually in sheet form) has found a wide range of applications in industry due to its high formability. The inner and outer panels of a car body are good examples of such an implementation. While low carbon steel has been used in this application for many decades, a reliable predictive capability of the forming process and “springback” has still not been achieved. NIST has been involved in addressing this and other formability problems for several years. In this paper, texture produced by the in-plane straining and its relationship to springback is reported. Low carbon steel sheet was examined in the as-received condition and after balanced biaxial straining to 25%. This was performed using the Marciniak in-plane stretching test. Both experimental measurements and numerical calculations have been utilized to evaluate anisotropy and evolution of the elastic properties during forming. We employ several techniques for elastic property measurements (dynamic mechanical analysis, static four point bending, mechanical resonance frequency measurements), and several calculation schemes (orientation distribution function averaging, finite element analysis) which are based on texture measurements (neutron diffraction, electron back scattering diffraction). The following objectives are pursued: a) To test a range of different experimental techniques for elastic property measurements in sheet metals; b) To validate numerical calculation methods of the elastic properties by experiments; c) To evaluate elastic property changes (and texture development) during biaxial straining. On the basis of the investigation, recommendations are made for the evaluation of elastic properties in textured sheet metal.

This paper deals with a numerical study aimed at the characterization of hot gas ingestion through turbine rim seals. The numerical campaign focused on an experimental facility which models ingress through the rim seal into the upstream wheel-space of an axial-turbine stage. Single-clearance arrangements were considered in the form of axial- and radial-seal gap configurations. With the radial-seal clearance configuration, CFD steady-state solutions were able to predict the system sealing effectiveness over a wide range of coolant mass flow rates reasonably well. The greater insight of flow field provided by the computations illustrates the thermal buffering effect when ingress occurs: for a given sealing flow rate, the effectiveness on the rotor was significantly higher than that on the stator due to the axial flow of hot gases from stator to rotor caused by pumping effects. The predicted effectiveness on the rotor was compared with a theoretical model for the thermal buffering effect showing good agreement. When the axial-seal clearance arrangement is considered, the agreement between CFD and experiments worsens; the variation of sealing effectiveness with coolant flow rate calculated by means of the simulations display a distinct kink. It was found that the “kink phenomenon” can be ascribed to an over-estimation of the egress spoiling effects due to turbulence modelling limitations. Despite some weaknesses in the numerical predictions, the paper shows that CFD can be used to characterize the sealing performance of axial- and radial-clearance turbine rim seals.

In this paper, we provide not only key knowledge for friction model selection among candidate models but also experimental friction features compared with numerical predictions reproduced by the candidate models. A motor-driven one-dimensional sliding block has been designed and fabricated in our lab to carry out a wide range of control tasks for the friction feature demonstrations and the parameter identifications of the candidate models. Besides the well-known static features such as break-away force and viscous friction, our setup experimentally demonstrates subtle dynamic features that characterize the physical behavior. The candidate models coupled with correct parameters experimentally obtained from our setup are taken to simulate the features of interest. The first part of this work briefly introduces the candidate friction models, the friction features of interest, and our experimental approach. The second part of this work is dedicated to the comparisons between the experimental features and the numerical model predictions. The discrepancies between the experimental features and the numerical model predictions help researchers to judge the accuracy of the models. The relation between the candidate model structures and their numerical friction feature predictions is investigated and discussed. A table that summarizes how to select the most optimal friction model among a variety of engineering applications is presented at the end of this paper. Such comprehensive comparisons have not been reported in previous literature.

An asymmetric increase in the apparent values of the interfacial fracture toughness with increasing mode II component of loading has been observed by several investigators. In this study, cracks were grown in a steady-state manner along the glass/epoxy interface in sandwich specimens in order to determine the mechanisms responsible for the shielding effect. Finite element analysis using a hydrostatic stress and strain rate dependent plasticity model for the epoxy and a cohesive zone model for the interface shows that plastic dissipation in the epoxy accounts for the asymmetric shielding seen in these experiments which cover a wide range of mode mix. Numerical predictions of normal crack-opening displacements yielded results that were consistent with measured values which were made as close as 0.3 μm from the crack tip.
