A multioffset vertical seismic profiling experiment for anisotropy analysis and depth imaging

A multioffset vertical seismic profile (VSP) was carried out in the Rocky Mountain foothills of southern Alberta, Canada. The purpose of this experiment was to investigate whether the dipping shale strata exhibit P‐wave velocity anisotropy and, if so, to calculate the Thomsen anisotropy parameters for use in anisotropic depth migration. Traveltime inversion of first‐arrival data from the multioffset VSP revealed that the dipping Mesozoic clastics in the area exhibit seismic velocity anisotropy of about 10%. The anisotropy parameters derived from this experiment were then used in anisotropic prestack depth migration of data from a surface seismic line close to the VSP well. Comparison of the anisotropic migration with the corresponding isotropic prestack depth migration showed that the target was imaged incorrectly in the isotropic case; a lateral shift of 180 m in the updip direction of the overlying beds was observed. The image obtained with an anisotropic velocity model was also better focused than that obtained assuming isotropic velocities.

We have developed an anisotropic prestack depth migration code that can migrate either vertical seismic profile (VSP) or surface seismic data. We use this migration code in a new method for integrated VSP and surface seismic depth imaging. Instead of splicing the VSP image into the section derived from surface seismic data, we use the same migration algorithm and a single velocity model to migrate both data sets to a common output grid. We then scale and sum the two images to yield one integrated depth‐migrated section. After testing this method on synthetic surface seismic and VSP data, we applied it to field data from a 2D surface seismic line and a multioffset VSP from the Rocky Mountain Foothills of southern Alberta, Canada. Our results show that the resulting integrated image exhibits significant improvement over that obtained from (a) the migration of either data set alone or (b) the conventional splicing approach. The integrated image uses the broader frequency bandwidth of the VSP data to provide higher vertical resolution than the migration of the surface seismic data. The integrated image also shows enhanced structural detail, since no part of the surface seismic section is eliminated, and good event continuity through the use of a single migration–velocity model, obtained by an integrated interpretation of borehole and surface seismic data. This enhanced migrated image enabled us to perform a more robust interpretation with good well ties.

An efficient Kirchhoff-style prestack depth migration, called “parsimonious” migration, was developed a decade ago for isotropic 2D and 3D media by using measured slownesses to reduce the amount of ray tracing by orders of magnitude. It is conceptually similar to “map” migration, but its implementation has some differences. We have extended this approach to 2D tilted transversely isotropic (TTI) media and illustrated it with synthetic P-wave data. Although the framework of isotropic parsimonious may be retained, the extension to TTI media requires redevelopment of each of the numerical components, calculation of the phase and group velocity for TTI media, development of a new two-point anisotropic ray tracer, and substitution of an initial-angle isotropic shooting ray-trace algorithm for an anisotropic one. The model parameterization consists of Thomsen’s parameters ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) and the tilt angle of the symmetry axis of the TI medium. The parsimonious anisotropic migration algorithm is successfully applied to synthetic data from a TTI version of the Marmousi2 model. The quality of the image improves by weighting the impulse response by the calculation of the anisotropic Fresnel radius. The accuracy and speed of this migration makes it useful for anisotropic velocity model building. The elapsed computing time for 101 shots for the Marmousi2 TTI model is 35 s per shot (each with 501 traces) in 32 Opteron cores.

We developed velocity models to prestack depth migrate two seismic lines acquired in an area of complex mountainous geology in southern Alberta, Canada. Initial processing in the time domain was designed to attenuate noise and enhance the signal in the data. The prestack and poststack time-migrated sections were poorly focused, implying the velocity models would be inadequate for prestack depth migration. The velocity models for prestack depth migration, developed by flattening reflections on common image gathers, ineffectively imaged the complex geology. We developed our most effective velocity models by integrating the mapped surface geology and dips, well formation tops, geological cross sections, and seismic-velocity information into the interpretation of polygonal areas of constant velocity on several iterations of prestack depth-migrated seismic sections. The resulting depth-processed sections show a more geologically realistic geometry for the reflectors at depth and achieve better focusing than either the time-migrated sections or the depth sections migrated with velocity models derived by flattening reflections on offset gathers.

Prestack depth migration can be used in the velocity model estimation process if one succeeds in interpreting depth events obtained with erroneous velocity models. The interpretational difficulty arises from the fact that migration with erroneous velocity does not yield the geologically correct reflector geometries and that individual migrated images suffer from poor signal‐to‐noise ratio. Moreover, migrated events may be of considerable complexity and thus hard to identify. In this paper, we examine the influence of wrong velocity models on the output of prestack depth migration in the case of straight reflector and point diffractor data in homogeneous media. To avoid obscuring migration results by artifacts (“smiles”), we use a geometrical technique for modeling and migration yielding a point‐to‐point map from time‐domain data to depth‐domain data. We discover that strong deformation of migrated events may occur even in situations of simple structures and small velocity errors. From a kinematical point of view, we compare the results of common‐shot and common‐offset migration. and we find that common‐offset migration with erroneous velocity models yields less severe image distortion than common‐shot migration. However, for any kind of migration, it is important to use the entire cube of migrated data to consistently interpret in the prestack depth‐migrated domain.

Abstract We exploit estimates of P-wave reflectivity from autocorrelation of transmitted teleseismic P arrivals and their coda in a common reflection point (CRP) migration technique. The approach employs the same portion of the vertical-component seismogram, as in standard Ps receiver function analysis. This CRP prestack depth migration approach has the potential to image lithospheric structures on scales as fine as 4 km or less. The P-wave autocorrelation process and migration are implemented in open-source software—the autocorrelogram calculation (ACC) package, which builds on the widely used the seismological Obspy toolbox. The ACC package is written in the open-source and free Python programming language (3.0 or newer) and has been extensively tested in an Anaconda Python environment. The package is simple and friendly to use and runs on all major operating systems (e.g., Windows, macOS, and Linux). We utilize Python multiprocessing parallelism to speed up the ACC on a personal computer system, or servers, with multiple cores and threads. The application of the ACC package is illustrated with application to the closely spaced Warramunga array in northern Australia. The results show how fine-scale structures in the lithospheric can be effectively imaged at relatively high frequencies. The Moho ties well with conventional H−κ receiver analysis and deeper structure inferred from stacked autocorrelograms for continuous data. CRP prestack depth migration provides an important complement to common conversion point receiver function stacks, since it is less affected by surface multiples at lithospheric depths.

Orthorhombic models are often used in the interpretation of azimuthally varying seismic signatures recorded over fractured reservoirs. Here, we develop an analytic framework for describing the attenuation coefficients in orthorhombic media with orthorhombic attenuation (i.e., the symmetry of both the real and imaginary parts of the stiffness tensor is identical) under the assumption of homogeneous wave propagation. The analogous form of the Christoffel equation in the symmetry planes of orthorhombic and VTI (transversely isotropic with a vertical symmetry axis) media helps to obtain the symmetry-plane attenuation coefficients by adapting the existing VTI equations. To take full advantage of this equivalence with transverse isotropy, we introduce a parameter set similar to the VTI attenuation-anisotropy parameters [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text]. This notation, based on the same principle as Tsvankin’s velocity-anisotropy parameters for orthorhombic media, leads to concise linearized equations for thesymmetry-plane attenuation coefficients of all three modes (P, [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text]).The attenuation-anisotropy parameters also allow us to simplify the P-wave attenuation coefficient [Formula: see text] outside the symmetry planes under the assumptions of small attenuation and weak velocity and attenuation anisotropy. The approximate coefficient [Formula: see text] has the same form as the linearized P-wave phase-velocity function, with the velocity parameters [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] replaced by the attenuation parameters [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. The exact attenuation coefficient, however, also depends on the velocity-anisotropy parameters, while the body-wave velocities are almost unperturbed by the presence of attenuation. The reduction in the number of parameters responsible for the P-wave attenuation and the simple approximation for the coefficient [Formula: see text] provide a basis for inverting P-wave attenuation measurements from orthorhombic media. The attenuation processing must be preceded by anisotropic velocity analysis that can be performed (in the absence of pronounced velocity dispersion) using existing algorithms for nonattenuative media.

We describe a new shortcut strategy for imaging the sediments and salt edge around a salt flank through an overburden salt canopy. We tested its performance and capabilities on 2D synthetic acoustic seismic data from a Gulf of Mexico style model. We first redatumed surface shots, using seismic interferometry, from a walkaway vertical seismic profile survey as if the source and receiver pairs had been located in the borehole at the positions of the receivers. This process creates effective downhole shot gathers by completely moving surface shots through the salt canopy, without any knowledge of overburden velocity structure. After redatuming, we can apply multiple passes of prestack migration from the reference datum of the bore-hole. In our example, first-pass migration, using only a simple vertical velocity gradient model, reveals the outline of the salt edge. A second pass of reverse-time, prestack depth migration using full two-way wave equation was performed with an updated velocity model that consisted of the velocity gradient and salt dome. The second-pass migration brings out dipping sediments abutting the salt flank because these reflectors were illuminated by energy that bounced off the salt flank, forming prismatic reflections. In this target-oriented strategy, the computationally fast redatuming process eliminates the need for the traditional complex process of velocity estimation, model building, and iterative depth migration to remove effects of the salt canopy and surrounding overburden. This might allow this strategy to be used in the field in near real time.

The isochron, the name given to a surface of equal two‐way time, has a profound position in seismic imaging. In this paper, I introduce a framework for construction of isochrons for a given velocity model. The basic idea is to let trajectories called isochron rays be associated with iso chrons in an way analogous to the association of conventional rays with wavefronts. In the context of prestack depth migration, an isochron ray based on conventional ray theory represents a simultaneous downward continuation from both source and receiver. The isochron ray is a generalization of the normal ray for poststack map migration. I have organized the process with systems of ordinary differential equations appearing on two levels. The upper level is model‐independent, and the lower level consists of conventional one‐way ray tracing. An advantage of the new method is that interpolation in a ray domain using isochron rays is able to treat triplications (multiarrivals) accurately, as opposed to interpolation in the depth domain based on one‐way traveltime tables. Another nice property is that the Beylkin determinant, an important correction factor in amplitude‐preserving seismic imaging, is closely related to the geometric spreading of isochron rays. For these reasons, the isochron ray has the potential to become a core part of future implementations of prestack depth migration. In addition, isochron rays can be applied in many contexts of forward and inverse seismic modeling, e.g., generation of Fresnel volumes, map migration of prestack traveltime events, and generation of a depth‐domain–based cost function for velocity model updating.
