Magnetic properties of unrusted steel drums from laboratory and field‐magnetic measurements

Laboratory‐derived magnetic properties from samples of steel drums appear to be lower than bulk magnetic properties required to produce observed magnetic anomalies over the same drums. The origin of this discrepancy is perhaps in the shape demagnetization experienced by samples used in the laboratory study. Laboratory observations of magnetic susceptibility in different directions suggest that the demagnetization mechanism may have significantly attenuated the laboratory‐derived magnetization values from small samples of drums. Field observations and computer modeling indicate that even though the effect of demagnetization is important for drum‐shaped objects, demagnetization is less pronounced in the shape of the drum than in the samples cut for laboratory measurements. Therefore, laboratory‐derived magnetizations from samples of steel drums cannot be used to model magnetic anomalies of steel drums. If laboratory‐derived magnetizations were used to model steel drums, the models would underestimate the resulting magnetic anomalies considerably and, in turn, would overestimate the number of buried drums at an environmental investigation site. Apparent bulk magnetization values for unrusted vertically oriented 55 and 30 gallon drums have been calculated (i.e., the values corrected for the effect of shape demagnetization of the drums). These range from ∼90 to ∼125 SI units (∼7 to ∼10 cgs units) for volume susceptibility and from ∼325 to ∼2750 A/m (∼0.325 to [Formula: see text]) for remanent magnetization (based on eight 55 gallon and four 30 gallon drums). Further deviations in these values could arise from the type and thickness of the steel and variations in manufacturing conditions affecting magnetizations. From the point of view of modeling the drums, at most source‐to‐observation distances applicable to environmental investigations, the equivalent source method is able to approximate the observed anomalies of steel drums better than the 3-D modeling method. With two years of rusting, magnetic anomalies of some of the drums have reduced, while in other drums, they have slightly increased. The overall magnetic changes caused by rusting appear to be more complex than anticipated, at least in the initial phase of rusting.

Objective: The influence of Manganese (Mn2+) and Cobalt (Co2+) ions doping on the optical and magnetic properties of ZnO nanoparticles was studied. Methods: Nanoparticle samples of type ZnO, Zn0.97Mn0.03O, Zn0.96Mn0.03Co0.01O, Zn0.95Mn0.03 Co0.02O, Zn0.93Mn0.03Co0.04O, and Zn0.91Mn0.03Co0.06O were synthesized using the wet chemical coprecipitation method. Results: X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed that the prepared samples exhibited a single phase of hexagonal wurtzite structure without any existence of secondary phases. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images clarified that Co doping at high concentrations has the ability to alter the morphologies of the samples from spherical shaped nanoparticles (NPS) to nanorods (NRs) shaped particles. The different vibrational modes of the prepared samples were analyzed through Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements. The optical characteristics and structural defects of the samples were studied through Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. PL results clarified that Mn2+ and Co2+ doping quenched the recombination of electron-hole pairs and enhanced the number of point defects relative to the undoped ZnO sample. Magnetic measurements were carried out at room temperature using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). (Mn, Co) co-doped ZnO samples exhibited a ferromagnetic behavior coupled with paramagnetic and weak diamagnetic contributions. Conclusion: Mn2+ and Co2+ doping enhanced the room temperature Ferromagnetic (RTFM) behavior of ZnO. In addition, the signature for antiferromagnetic ordering between the Co ions was revealed. Moreover, a strong correlation between the magnetic and optical behavior of the (Mn, Co) co-doped ZnO was analyzed.

The complexes of lanthanide metals, especially dysprosium, can generally exhibit excellent magnetic properties. By means of modifying ligands, dual functions or even multi-functions can be achieved. Here, we synthesized an eight-coordinate Dy(III) complex 1, [Dy(HL-o)2(MeOH)2](ClO4)3·4.5MeOH, which is single-molecule magnet (SMM), and the introduction of the rhodamine 6G chromophore in the ring-opened ligand HL-o realizes ligand-centered fluorescence in addition to SMM. Magnetic measurements and ab initio calculations indicate that the magnetic relaxation for complex 1 should be due to the Raman relaxation process. Studies on magneto-structural correlationship of the rhodamine salicylaldehyde hydrazone Dy(III) complexes show that the calculated energy of the first Kramers Doublet (EKD1) is basically related to the Ophenoxy-Dy-Ophenoxy bond angle, i.e., the larger Ophenoxy-Dy-Ophenoxy bond angle corresponds to a larger EKD1.

Breast cancer is one of the major causes of death among women. If a cancer can be detected early, the options of treatment and the chances of total recovery will increase. From a woman's point of view, the procedure practiced (compression of breasts to record an image) to obtain a digital mammogram (DM) is exactly the same that is used to obtain a screen film mammogram (SFM). The quality of DM is undoubtedly better than SFM. However, obtaining DM is costlier and very few institutions can afford DM machines. According to the National Cancer Institute 92% of breast imaging centers in India do not have digital mammography machines and they depend on the conventional SFM. Hence in this context, one should answer "Can SFM be enhanced up to a level of DM?" In this paper, we discuss our experimental analysis in this regard. We applied elementary image enhancement techniques to obtain enhanced SFM. We performed the quality analysis of DM and enhanced SFM using standard metrics like PSNR and RMSE on more than 350 mammograms. We also used mean opinion score (MOS) analysis to evaluate enhanced SFMs. The results showed that the clarity of processed SFM is as good as DM. Furthermore, we analyzed the extent of radiation exposed during SFM and DM. We presented our literally findings and clinical observations.

Abstract Nowcasting precipitation is a key element in the anticipation of floods in warning systems. In this framework, weather radars are very useful because of the high resolution of their measurements both in time and space. The aim of this study is to assess the performance of a recently proposed nowcasting technique (S-PROG) from a hydrological point of view in a Mediterranean environment. S-PROG is based on the advection of weather radar fields according to the motion field derived with an algorithm based on tracking radar echoes by correlation (TREC), and it has the ability of filtering out the most unpredictable scales of these fields as the forecasting time increases. Validation of this nowcasting technique was done from two different perspectives: (i) comparing forecasted precipitation fields against radar measurements, and (ii) by means of a distributed rainfall runoff model, comparing hydrographs simulated with a hydrological model using rainfall fields forecasted by S-PROG against hydrographs generated with the model using the entire series of radar measurements. In both cases, results obtained by a simpler nowcasting technique are used as a reference to evaluate improvements. Validation showed that precipitation fields forecasted with S-PROG seem to be better than fields forecasted using simpler techniques. Additionally, hydrological validation led the authors to point out that the use of radar-based nowcasting techniques allows the anticipation window in which flow estimates are forecasted with enough quality to be sensibly extended.

The spatfall in 1924, as in 1923, was very slight and from the point of view of the oyster-producer was a failure, and was little better in 1922.The growth of oysters in the summer of 1924 was unusually great; this has had the effect of bringing a large proportion of small oysters to a legally takeable size.The dredging results have, therefore, been much better than they were expected to be in the season of 1924–25, but the effect has been to deplete the beds still more of reserve stocks of small.Practically all the present stocks of small oysters are of a size between 2 and 2½ inches.With only average growth in 1925 and 1926 a large majority of these small oysters will have attained a size which will not pass through a 2½-inch ring; hence the beds are in a dangerous state.If, therefore, dredging continues under the present conditions, almost the whole of the present stock of small will have grown to large oysters and be cleared off the beds in the season of 1926–27.It is shown that although oysters may grow to a size of 2½ inches at Falmouth in small numbers in three summers, yet four summers are required before a fair proportion of spat can be expected to attain a size of 2½ inches.

The crystallization and optimization of magnetic properties effects in FeXSiB (X=Cu, V, Co, Zr, Nb) amorphous alloys were studied by applying X-ray diffraction methods, high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), resistometric and magnetic measurements. The temperatures of the first and the second stage of crystallization, the 1h optimization annealing temperature and the Curie temperature were determined for different amorphous alloys. Activation energies of crystallization process were obtained by applying the Kissinger method. The influence of alloy additions on optimization effect and crystallization processes was carefully examined.

AbstractLocal magnetic anomalies of large magnitude are found over the marginal ultrabasic rocks of the Loch Ailsh intrusion. An intrepretation of these anomalies based on the measured magnetic properties of the pyroxenites shows that they are not reconcilable with a low-angle structure as required by the hypothesis that the intrusion is a stratified laccolite, and suggests that they form a steeply dipping sheet at the syenite-limestone contact. Similar anomalies occur along the southern margin of the Loch Borralan complex, suggesting steeply dipping marginal ultrabasic rocks.

Abstract The use of Z-pinch facilities makes it possible to carry out well-controlled and diagnosable laboratory experiments to study laboratory jets with scaling parameters close to those of the jets from young stars. This makes it possible to observe processes that are inaccessible to astronomical observations. Such experiments are carried out at the PF-3 facility (“plasma focus,” Kurchatov Institute), in which the emitted plasma emission propagates along the drift chamber through the environment at a distance of one meter. The paper presents the results of experiments with helium, in which a successive release of two ejections was observed. An analysis of these results suggests that after the passage of the first supersonic ejection, a region with a low concentration is formed behind it, the so-called vacuum trace, due to which the subsequent ejection practically does not experience environmental resistance and propagates being collimated. The numerical modeling of the propagation of two ejections presented in the paper confirms this point of view. Using scaling laws and appropriate numerical simulations of astrophysical ejections, it is shown that this effect can also be significant for the jets of young stars.

This study aims to evaluate Siskeudes V2.0. R.0.1., from the system and its output, which is also analyzed is related to the measurement of efficiency and effectiveness of the use of village funds. Data collection is done by evaluating the application system, and calculating the financial ratio of siskeudes application output, in villages in West Lombok Regency. In terms of system evaluation, as a connection effect between the planning and budgeting stages, implementation and administration, to financial reporting, traceability and connectivity Siskeudes V2.0 R.0.1. better than Siskeudes V1.0.R1.06. The existence of the Activity Package in budgeting and implementing expenditures also makes it easier for the village government to make village financial statements. From the point of view of the village government, the average person has been able to estimate the using of funds and allocation in the activities field. Thus, the ability of the village government in West Lombok Regency in estimating routine expenditures and village capital expenditures (harmony), which has an effect on the efficiency and effectiveness of village funds, has been good. As a suggestion, because there is no automatic measurement of financial efficiency and effectiveness in Siskeudes to measure the financial performance of village governments, researchers advised the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Home Affairs to draw up regulations for calculating village financial ratios, as well as integrate them in Siskeudes applications.
