Simple data processing procedures for seismic section noise reduction

Seismic traces are signals composed of information and noise. In essence, the part of the data set that is noise obscures the information and complicates the processing and interpretation of the seismic traces. Of the two procedures discussed, one is maximum standard deviation for an optimum threshold, and the other is the data transformation by variance. Either or both procedures can be used to enhance signal‐to‐noise (S/N) ratio. The procedures are data processing steps that are applied to each trace. Examples of successful application of the procedures are presented.

To image deeper portions of the earth, geophysicists must record reflection data with much greater source-receiver offsets. The problem with these data is that the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) significantly diminishes with greater offset. In many cases, the poor S/N makes the far-offset reflections imperceptible on the shot records. To mitigate this problem, we have developed supervirtual reflection interferometry (SVI), which can be applied to far-offset reflections to significantly increase their S/N. The key idea is to select the common pair gathers where the phases of the correlated reflection arrivals differ from one another by no more than a quarter of a period so that the traces can be coherently stacked. The traces are correlated and summed together to create traces with virtual reflections, which in turn are convolved with one another and stacked to give the reflection traces with much stronger S/Ns. This is similar to refraction SVI except far-offset reflections are used instead of refractions. The theory is validated with synthetic tests where SVI is applied to far-offset reflection arrivals to significantly improve their S/N. Reflection SVI is also applied to a field data set where the reflections are too noisy to be clearly visible in the traces. After the implementation of reflection SVI, the normal moveout velocity can be accurately picked from the SVI-improved data, leading to a successful poststack migration for this data set.

Considering the evolution of automatic mapping programs and the huge amount of available data, the key elements that go into creating thematic maps are presented so that those less familiar with map-making might be able to craft accurate, reliable and illustrative maps.Here, we used ArcGIS Pro in order to exemplify the process of creating thematic maps presenting correlations between the number of emergency/total 112 calls and the population of Romanian counties. These freely-available data were classified using Natural Brakes, Quantile, Equal Interval, Geometric Interval, Standard Deviation, Defined Interval and Manual Interval, so as to highlight their relevant aspects. The value of the goodness of absolute deviation fit was calculated for each method and each data set. The maps were then created using combined choropleth and proportional symbol methods. The ratio between the total number of 112 calls and the county populations, structured into five classes, has been represented using choropleth method. On the resulting map, emergency calls have been represented with proportional symbols. Furthermore, aspects related to the other map elements were presented all in one place, in order to create a thematic map that would be easy to understand and interpret.The findings of the present paper could be used by those who want to represent their own data in a very suggestive and reliable manner, without having had any cartographic training beforehand. They could also more easily interpret their datasets and be able to take the necessary steps in their own domains of activity.

The objective of the study was to relate estimated breeding values (EBVs) of the parents’ 305-days protein production and the bull dam herd-year characteristics to the empirical bias in pedigree indices (difference between the pedigree index and the final proof) of young bulls. Two animal model evaluations were carried out; one included records up to 1990 and the other up to spring 1992. The final data set included 242 bulls with pedigree indices, final proofs, parents’ EBVs, production and herd information (the size, the average production and the intraherd standard deviation) of the dams. The average empirical bias in pedigree indices was 13.6 kg. The correlation between the final proof of the bull and the EBVs of the bull sire or dam were 0.45 and 0.17, respectively. The low correlation with bull dam EBV indicates the unreliability of the bull dam EBVs. Size of the herd and the standard deviation of production in the herd when bull dam produced its third lactation were correlated with the empirical bias in pedigree index. Pedigree indices of the bulls coming from small herds with high intraherd standard deviation were more biased than those from the big herds with low intraherd standard deviation. The best bulls, when grouped according to their final proofs, were sons of the highest EBV sires. EBVs of bull dams did not differ in the highest and the lowest final proof groups, but the dams of the best bull group had a higher first lactation record than the dams of the other bull groups.

Abstract. Carbonyl sulfide (COS) flux measurements with the eddy covariance (EC) technique are becoming popular for estimating gross primary productivity. To compare COS flux measurements across sites, we need standardized protocols for data processing. In this study, we analyze how various data processing steps affect the calculated COS flux and how they differ from carbon dioxide (CO2) flux processing steps, and we provide a method for gap-filling COS fluxes. Different methods for determining the time lag between COS mixing ratio and the vertical wind velocity (w) resulted in a maximum of 15.9 % difference in the median COS flux over the whole measurement period. Due to limited COS measurement precision, small COS fluxes (below approximately 3 pmol m−2 s−1) could not be detected when the time lag was determined from maximizing the covariance between COS and w. The difference between two high-frequency spectral corrections was 2.7 % in COS flux calculations, whereas omitting the high-frequency spectral correction resulted in a 14.2 % lower median flux, and different detrending methods caused a spread of 6.2 %. Relative total uncertainty was more than 5 times higher for low COS fluxes (lower than ±3 pmol m−2 s−1) than for low CO2 fluxes (lower than ±1.5 µmol m−2 s−1), indicating a low signal-to-noise ratio of COS fluxes. Due to similarities in ecosystem COS and CO2 exchange, we recommend applying storage change flux correction and friction velocity filtering as usual in EC flux processing, but due to the low signal-to-noise ratio of COS fluxes, we recommend using CO2 data for time lag and high-frequency corrections of COS fluxes due to the higher signal-to-noise ratio of CO2 measurements.

The analysis of a data set of observation for Vietnamese banks in period from 2011 - 2015 shows how Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) is influenced by selected factors: asset of the bank SIZE, loans in total asset LOA, leverage LEV, net interest margin NIM, loans lost reserve LLR, Cash and Precious Metals in total asset LIQ. Results indicate based on data that NIM, LIQ have significant effect on CAR. On the other hand, SIZE and LEV do not appear to have significant effect on CAR. Variables NIM, LIQ have positive effect on CAR, while variables LLR and LOA are negatively related with CAR.

Cosmic ray artifacts may be present in all photo-electric readout systems. In spectroscopy, they present as random unidirectional sharp spikes that distort spectra and may have an affect on post-processing, possibly affecting the results of multivariate statistical classification. A number of methods have previously been proposed to remove cosmic ray artifacts from spectra but the goal of removing the artifacts while making no other change to the underlying spectrum is challenging. One of the most successful and commonly applied methods for the removal of comic ray artifacts involves the capture of two sequential spectra that are compared in order to identify spikes. The disadvantage of this approach is that at least two recordings are necessary, which may be problematic for dynamically changing spectra, and which can reduce the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio when compared with a single recording of equivalent duration due to the inclusion of two instances of read noise. In this paper, a cosmic ray artefact removal algorithm is proposed that works in a similar way to the double acquisition method but requires only a single capture, so long as a data set of similar spectra is available. The method employs normalized covariance in order to identify a similar spectrum in the data set, from which a direct comparison reveals the presence of cosmic ray artifacts, which are then replaced with the corresponding values from the matching spectrum. The advantage of the proposed method over the double acquisition method is investigated in the context of the S/N ratio and is applied to various data sets of Raman spectra recorded from biological cells.

This article presents a new method of image filtering based on a new kind of image processing transformation, particularly the wavelet-Ateb–Gabor transformation, that is a wider basis for Gabor functions. Ateb functions are symmetric functions. The developed type of filtering makes it possible to perform image transformation and to obtain better biometric image recognition results than traditional filters allow. These results are possible due to the construction of various forms and sizes of the curves of the developed functions. Further, the wavelet transformation of Gabor filtering is investigated, and the time spent by the system on the operation is substantiated. The filtration is based on the images taken from NIST Special Database 302, that is publicly available. The reliability of the proposed method of wavelet-Ateb–Gabor filtering is proved by calculating and comparing the values of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and mean square error (MSE) between two biometric images, one of which is filtered by the developed filtration method, and the other by the Gabor filter. The time characteristics of this filtering process are studied as well.

Abstract The decays D → K−π+π+π− and D → K−π+π0 are studied in a sample of quantum-correlated $$ D\overline{D} $$ D D ¯ pairs produced through the process e+e− → ψ(3770) → $$ D\overline{D} $$ D D ¯ , exploiting a data set collected by the BESIII experiment that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb−1. Here D indicates a quantum superposition of a D0 and a $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ D ¯ 0 meson. By reconstructing one neutral charm meson in a signal decay, and the other in the same or a different final state, observables are measured that contain information on the coherence factors and average strong-phase differences of each of the signal modes. These parameters are critical inputs in the measurement of the angle γ of the Unitarity Triangle in B− → DK− decays at the LHCb and Belle II experiments. The coherence factors are determined to be RK3π = $$ {0.52}_{-0.10}^{+0.12} $$ 0.52 − 0.10 + 0.12 and $$ {R}_{K{\pi \pi}^0} $$ R K ππ 0 = 0.78 ± 0.04, with values for the average strong-phase differences that are $$ {\delta}_D^{K3\pi }=\left({167}_{-19}^{+31}\right){}^{\circ} $$ δ D K 3 π = 167 − 19 + 31 ° and $$ {\delta}_D^{K{\pi \pi}^0}=\left({196}_{-15}^{+14}\right){}^{\circ} $$ δ D K ππ 0 = 196 − 15 + 14 ° , where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic contributions. The analysis is re-performed in four bins of the phase-space of the D → K−π+π+π− to yield results that will allow for a more sensitive measurement of γ with this mode, to which the BESIII inputs will contribute an uncertainty of around 6°.

Abstract Background GPS-based cycling data are increasingly available for traffic planning these days. However, the recorded data often contain more information than simply bicycle trips. GPS tracks resulting from tracking while using other modes of transport than bike or long periods at working locations while people are still tracking are only some examples. Thus, collected bicycle GPS data need to be processed adequately to use them for transportation planning. Results The article presents a multi-level approach towards bicycle-specific data processing. The data processing model contains different steps of processing (data filtering, smoothing, trip segmentation, transport mode recognition, driving mode detection) to finally obtain a correct data set that contains bicycle trips, only. The validation reveals a sound accuracy of the model at its’ current state (82–88%).

Abstract A typical qualitative microbiological method performance (collaborative) study gathers a data set of responses about a test for the presence or absence of a target microbe. We developed 2 models that estimate false-positive and false-negative rates. One model assumes a constant probability that the tests will indicate the target microbe is present for any positive concentration in the test portion. The other model assumes that this probability follows a logistic curve. Test results from several method performance studies illustrate these estimates.
