A new method for continuing two‐dimensional potential data upward from an uneven track is developed with special emphasis on solving a particular practical problem, that of magnetic data taken near the bottom of the ocean. The method is based on the use of the Schwarz‐Christoffel transformation, which maps the original, irregular track into a horizontal straight line. It has been found to be very fast computationally and to suffer none of the restrictions found in some earlier two‐dimensional algorithms.

A set of two-dimensional subsonic flows past certain cylinders is obtained using hodograph methods, in which the true pressure-volume relationship is replaced by various straight-line approximations. It is found that the approximation obtained by a least-squares method possibly gives best results. Comparison is made with values obtained by using the von Kármán-Tsien approximation and also with results obtained by the variational approach of Lush & Cherry (1956).

Airborne magnetic data covering geographical latitudes of 7000‟N to 7030‟N and longitudes of 3 30′E to 4 00′E within Ibadan area were obtained from Nigeria Geology Survey Agency. The data were ana-lyzed to map the sub surface structure and the source parameters were deduced from the quantitative and qualitative interpretation of magnetic data. The upward continuation technique was used to de-emphasize short – wavelength anomaly while the depth to magnetic sources in the area was deter-mined using local wavenumber technique, the analytic signal was also employed to obtain the depths of the magnetic basement. Analysis involving the local wavenumber, upward continuation and appar-ent magnetic susceptibility techniques significantly improves the interpretation of magnetic data in terms of delineating the geological structure, source parameter and magnetic susceptibility within Iba-dan area.. These depth ranges from 0.607km to 2.48km. The apparent susceptibility map at the cut-off wavelength of 50 m ranges from -0.00012 to 0.00079 which agree with the susceptibility value of some rock types; granite gneiss, migmatite biotite gneiss, biotite muscovite granite, hornblende granite, quartz and schists. The result of the local wavenumber suggests variation along the profiles in the surface of magnetic basement across the study area.

We consider the class of two-dimensional maps of the plane for which there exists a whole one-dimensional singular set (for example, a straight line) that is mapped into one point, called a "knot point" of the map. The special character of this kind of point has been already observed in maps of this class with at least one of the inverses having a vanishing denominator. In that framework, a knot is the so-called focal point of the inverse map (it is the same point). In this paper, we show that knots may also exist in other families of maps, not related to an inverse having values going to infinity. Some particular properties related to focal points persist, such as the existence of a "point to slope" correspondence between the points of the singular line and the slopes in the knot, lobes issuing from the knot point and loops in infinitely many points of an attracting set or in invariant stable and unstable sets.

A new method for extracting junction parameters of the single diode model is presented. A least squares method approach considers the deviation ∆V=f(I) between the experimental current-voltage (I-V) characteristic and a theoretical arbitrary characteristic. A specific case- the ∆V graph reducing to a straight line–is identified and the knowledge of the slope and of the intercept with the ordinate axis leads to the determination of the junction parameters. The method is applied to the characterization of the emitter-base junction of transistors and the results are discussed.

In this paper, a purely conformal mapping method for efficiently solving harmonic Dirichlet problems of electrostatic in domains free of charge and with charge whose boundaries have inconvenient geometries consisting of straight-line segments is presented. The method which uses the inverse of an appropriately determined Schwarz-Christoffel transformation as the mapping function, was applied to harmonic Dirichlet problems in an infinite strip and infinite sector and the solution or electrostatic potential for the problem obtained for each case. Furthermore, the equipotential lines of the electric field were also obtained in order to show the features of the solution and the field analysed accordingly. The electric field intensity was also analysed to show its variation in the field. This method could therefore be a suitable alternative method for solving Laplace's equation in two dimensional electrostatic problems.

AbstractThe average three-dimensional coordination number, n3, is an important measure of firn structure. The value of n3 can be estimated from n2, the average measured two-dimensional coordination number, and from a function, Γ, that depends only on the ratio of average bond radius to grain radius in the sample. This method is easy to apply and does not require the use of unknown shape factors or tunable parameters.

Abstract A new method is developed for determining both a satisfactory location of a workpiece and a suitable mounting-angle of the tool for planar RPR robots that can provide dexterous workspace. The method is an analytical representation of the geometry of the robot and the task, and is particularly well suited to applications in which the task requires large rotations of the end-effector. It is determined that, when the task requires that the end-effector rotate a full turn at just two locations and when the first or third joint in the robot is rotatable by one turn, then the radial location of the workpiece is fixed in the workcell but its angular location is not fixed. When the mounting-angle of the tool is also a variable, the method accommodates tasks in which the tool must rotate a full turn at three locations on the workpiece. The results are presented as coordinates of points in a two-dimensional Cartesian reference frame attached to the workcell. Consequently, a technician or an engineer can determine the location for the workpiece by laying out these coordinates directly in the workcell. Example problems illustrate the method. Practical applications include welding and deposition of adhesives.
