Abstract This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of suckling intensity (litter size and lactation length) to primiparious sows on production performance during current and subsequent parities. Upon farrowing, 115 primiparous sows (farrowing weight: 222.7 ± 20.0 kg) were initially allotted to 4 treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with 2 litter sizes: 10 and 13 piglets (LS10 vs. LS13), and 2 lactation lengths: 21 and 27 d (LL21 vs. LL27). Upon weaning, sows were rebred and those farrowed successfully (n = 66) kept 10 piglets and weaned at 21 d in the second parity. Sows were fed ad libitum during lactation in both parities. Feed intake, BW loss, backfat loss, litter size, and litter weight gain during lactation in both parities were determined. Litter weight gain in LS13 was greater (P < 0.05) than that in LS10 (54.4 vs. 47.7 kg) during the first lactation. Sows in LS13 had a greater (P < 0.05) BW loss than sows in LS10 (24.1 vs. 17.4 kg). Body weight loss was not different between LL27 and LL21. Sows in LS13 tended to have a greater (P = 0.075) removal rate than those in LS10 (47.5 vs. 32.2%). Sows in LL27 had a smaller (P < 0.05) removal rate than those in LL21 (28.0 vs. 51.7%). In the second parity, gestation BW gain in LL27 tended to be greater (P = 0.098) than that in LL21 when the previous litter size was 10 piglets (56.1 vs. 33.2 kg). Litter performance and feed intake of sows were not affected by previous litter size, lactation length, and their interaction. The farrowing weight, farrowing body protein and lipid, body weight loss was not different between LS13 and LS10, whereas backfat loss in LS13 was smaller (P < 0.05) than that in LS10 during the second lactation (0.9 vs. 2.4 mm). The predicted body lipid loss in LS13 was also smaller than that in LS10 (2.3 vs. 5.3 kg) during the second lactation. Sows in LL27 had a smaller (P < 0.05) BW loss and body lipid loss during the second lactation than sows in LL21 (4.0 vs. 9.0 kg; 2.3 vs. 4.8 kg). The concentration of milk fat in LL27 was smaller (P < 0.05) than that in LL21 (7.9 vs. 9.1%). In conclusion, increasing suckling intensity to primiparous sows increased litter weight gain but increasing litter size reduced piglet ADG. Sow performance in the second lactation was not negatively affected by increasing suckling intensity of the first lactation. Interestingly, sows with an increased suckling intensity in the first lactation had reduced loss of body reserves in the second lactation.

AbstractThe present work was planned to study the effects of different lighting regimes in both mild and hot periods of the year on New Zealand White doe rabbit traits. The light regimes used were natural daylight as control, 16 h light and 8 h darkness, 12 h light and 12 h darkness, and 8 h light and 16 h darkness. The traits studied were thermoregulatory parameters (respiration rate and temperatures of ear, rectum and skin), type of mating necessary, conception rate, gestation period, fur plucking, behavioural indicators of stress, litter size, litter weight, kit body weight, kit daily gain in weight, milk yield, kit milk intake, efficiency of conversion of milk into live-weight gain and kit mortality, at weekly intervals between birth and weaning at 35 days. Estimation of temperature-humidity index indicated that the doe rabbits were exposed to very severe heat stress, during the hot period of the year. Period of the year (heat stress) affected adversely many of the doe traits studied. The effects were significant (P < 0·001, 0·01 or 0·05) on thermoregulatory parameters (respiration rate and temperatures of ear, rectum and skin), litter weight at days 21 and 28 of age, kit body weight at birth, milk yield of the doe at day 7 of suckling and milk intake per kit at 7 and 14 days of age. Exposure of doe rabbits to a long daylight regime affected adversely many of the traits studied, while the contrary occurred with short daylight. The effects were significant (P < 0·001, 0·01 or 0·05) on litter size at all ages except at birth, litter weight at 14, 21 and 28 days of age, milk yield on all days studied, efficiency of conversion of milk into live-weight gain at days 7, 21 and 28 and mortality at birth and pre-weaning. There was no significant interaction between period of the year and light regime on any of the traits examined. Therefore, only the main factors are reported.

Abstract A total of 109 sows (Line 241; DNA, Columbus, NE) were used to evaluate the effect of increasing dietary phytase in lactation diets, already adequate in P, on sow and litter performance. On d 107 of gestation, sows were blocked by body weight and parity and allotted to 1 of 3 dietary treatments of increasing phytase concentration (0, 1,000, or 3,000 FYT/kg; Ronozyme Hi Phos GT 2700, DSM Nutritional Products, Inc., Parsippany, NJ). The control diet contained no phytase and was formulated to contain 0.50% standardized total tract digestible phosphorus (STTD P; 0.45% available P) and 0.62% STTD Calcium (0.90% total Ca). The phytase diets that contained 1,000 or 3,000 FYT/kg were also formulated to 0.50% STTD P and 0.62% STTD Ca including the release of 0.132% STTD P and 0.096% STTD Ca. Diets were balanced for net energy and fed from d 107 of gestation until weaning (d 18 ±3). All farrowings were monitored, with farrowing duration starting at the time the first pig was born until the first dispersal of placental tissues with no subsequent pigs born. Litters were cross-fostered within treatment until 48 h post-farrowing to equalize litter size. There were no differences among treatments in sow body weight at d 107 of gestation, 24-h after farrowing, or at weaning. Sow average daily feed intake from farrowing to weaning tended to increase (linear, P = 0.093) as phytase increased. There was no evidence for difference in the number of total born pigs, as well as the percentage of stillborns, mummies, and born alive pigs at the completion of farrowing. Similarly, phytase supplementation did not influence (P &gt; 0.05) wean-to-estrus interval or litter size after cross-fostering among dietary treatments. Although not significant (linear, P = 0.226), farrowing duration decreased as added phytase increased with a decrease of 47 minutes (12%) for 3,000 FYT compared to the control. There were no differences in pig weight at weaning, but as a result of increased survivability (linear, P = 0.002), litter weaning weight and overall litter weight gain increased (quadratic, P &lt; 0.05) up to 1,000 FYT of added phytase with no further benefit observed in sows fed 3,000 FYT. In conclusion, sow feed intake tended to increase linearly with increasing added phytase. Feeding 1,000 FYT/kg maximized overall litter gain and weaning weight; however, a larger scale study with more sows is needed to determine the addition of phytase in lactation diets to reduce farrowing duration.

AbstractScottish Blackface ewes (no. = 308) were scanned four times per year using X-ray computed tomography (CT scanning) (pre-mating, pre-lambing, mid lactation and weaning), from 18 months to 5 years of age, giving a maximum of 16 scanning events per ewe. Total weights of carcass fat, internal fat and carcass muscle were estimated from the CT images at each scanning event. Lambs produced by these ewes were weighed at birth, mid lactation and weaning to calculate litter growth traits: litter birth weight; litter weight gain from birth until mid lactation; and litter weight gain from birth until weaning. Genetic (rg) and phenotypic (rp) correlations were estimated between ewe CT tissue traits and litter growth traits. Correlations between ewe CT tissue traits and litter size (LS) were also estimated. Ewe CT tissue traits were either unadjusted or adjusted for total soft tissue weight (sum of weights of carcass fat, internal fat and carcass muscle) to investigate relationships with either absolute tissue weights of carcass fat (CFWT), internal fat (IFWT), and carcass muscle (CMWT), or relative proportions of carcass fat (CFP), internal fat (IFP), and carcass muscle (CMP). Litter growth traits were either unadjusted or adjusted for litter size, to investigate relationships with total lamb burden (total litter birth weight (TBW), total litter weight gain from birth until mid lactation (TWGM), total litter weight gain from birth until weaning (TWGW)) or average lamb performance (average lamb birth weight (ABW), average lamb weight gain from birth until mid lactation (AWGM), average lamb weight gain from birth until weaning (AWGW)).Moderate to large positive genetic correlations were estimated between absolute weights of all three ewe tissues (CFWT, IFWT, CMWT), or muscle proportion (CMP), and litter size (LS). Significant positive genetic correlations were also estimated between weight (CMWT) or proportion (CMP) of muscle carried by the ewe pre-mating and total birth weight (TBW) and weight gains (TWGM, TWGW) of her litter, largely due to the associated increase in litter size. Muscle proportion (CMP) was not significantly correlated to average lamb weights or weight gains (ABW, AWGM, AWGW). Pre-lambing carcass fat weight (CFWT) and proportion (CFP) in the ewe showed positive genetic correlations with average lamb weights and weight gains (ABW, AWGM, AWGW), whereas, after lambing, CFP was negatively correlated with these lamb traits. Internal fat weight (IFWT) pre-mating showed positive genetic correlations with all litter growth traits (TBW, TWGM, TWGW, ABW, AWGM, AWGW). Average lamb growth traits were negatively correlated with pre-lambing internal fat proportion (IFP), but positively correlated to IFP at mid lactation and weaning.Correlations were also estimated between each pair of CT traits. Total internal fat weight and total carcass fat weight were very highly correlated (rp= 0·75,rg= 0·96). Correlations with total carcass muscle weight were smaller and positive for both carcass fat weight (rp= 0·48,rg= 0·12) and internal fat weight (rp= 0·42,rg= 0·20).The results suggest that selection for increased carcass muscle weight or proportion in a Scottish Blackface hill flock would have a positive effect on total weights of litters reared, but that selection against carcass fat weight or proportion in a breeding programme for Blackface sheep may have an impact on the maternal ability of the ewe. However, maintaining fat in internal depots may reduce the depletion of carcass fat during pregnancy, allowing this depot to provide energy for lactation, and may have a positive impact on lamb growth.

1. Twelve groups of 3 litter-sister Large White gilts were given during three successive pregnancies a daily meal allowance of either 6 lb. (Group A) 3 lb. (Group B) or 3 lb. for 76 days followed by 6 lb. until parturition (Group C). During 8-week lactation periods all received the same daily allowance of 4 lb. meal plus 0·8 lb. for each piglet suckled.2. Net weight gains during the three successive pregnancies respectively were: Group A, 114, 97 and 79 lb.; Group B, 11, 10 and 7 lb.; Group C, 47, 44 and 35 lb. The differences between groups were highly significant (P<0·001) and there was a significant parity interaction (P<0·05) in that Group A sows showed a significant decline in net weight gain from parity to parity whereas those of Groups B and C did not. No relationship was found between net weight gain and litter weight at birth.3. Weight changes during the three successive lactation periods respectively were: Group A, –37, –41 and –36 lb.; Group B, 2, 14 and 4 lb.; Group C, –10, –14 and –5 lb. The differences between groups were significant to various degrees in different lactations. There was no relationship between weight changes during lactation and total litter weight at 3 weeks of age.4. Overall weight changes from first service to third weaning were: Group A, 160 lb.; Group B, 72 lb.; Group C, 71 lb. The differences between Group A and Groups B and C were highly significant (P<0·001).5. The implication of the results as an indication of feed requirements for reproduction is discussed.

SUMMARYTwo Poland China boars were mated with 12 Large White females and two Large White boars were used on the same number of females of similar background. In the post-weaning period a trial was conducted to compare the performance of purebred and crossbred progeny given a grower's diet on an ad libitum scale of feeding over the live-weight range 28 to 66 kg. Breed of boar did not influence litter size nor total litter weight at either birth or weaning. Poland China crosses compared with Large Whites grew more slowly to slaughter (10 %) but with equal efficiency of live-weight gain. Cross-breds had higher carcass yields (4 %), shorter (3 %) and deeper (2 %) carcasses, lower depths of mid-line and internal fat (11 %) and larger eye-muscle areas (22%). Breed of boar had little influence on joint proportions and no effect on carcass cut-out value. The eye muscles of crossbred carcasses were paler in colour and had higher transmission values but drip loss from the meat was not different.

THE EFFECT OF BIRTH WEIGHT WITH THE APPEARANCE OF THE PIGLETS UNTIL WEANING. The purpose of this research is to determine the corellation of birth weight with the appearance of the piglets until weaning. This research used the method of observation. Results or data obtained in this research, piglets from each parent is divided into 3 categories: high, medium, low. Retrieval of data held on a new born piglets, piglets aged 1 week until the time of weaning. Parameters observed in this research is the birth weight of piglets per head, body weight gain, the weight of piglets, and mortality (MRTA) piglets before weaned (%). Data were analyzed and presented descriptively, which is describing and explaining the general picture of direct observation. Based on the results of this research we concluded that litter size piglets, determines how high the birth weight, weaning weight, body weight gain, and mortality. The greater the birth weight more likely to obtain a high weaning weight as in this research the highest birth weight is 1.64 kg after weaning reached 7.54 kg. This experiment was undertaken to know the phenotypic characteristics of native sheep. The study was conducted to investigate morphometric characters of sheep in three different field sites (Naogaon, Noakhali and Tangail) and Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) nucleus flock through close observation, measuring and record keeping. Characteristics of body weight, body length, heart girth, wither height, fore leg length, hind leg length, head length, ear length, ear width, horn length etc were collected from mature sheep. The results indicate that the average litter size, birth weight, weaning weight and body weight gain were comparatively higher in sheep of BLRI nucleus flock than those of other three regions. The average numbers of service/conception, post partum heat period (days), age at first heat (days), age at first lambing (days), lambing interval (days) were 1.30, 34.13, 266.50, 432.72, 192.17 respectively in BLRI nucleus flock which were comparatively better than the other three regions. The average litter size, birth weight (kg), weaning weight (kg) and body weight gain (g) in nucleus flock were 1.80, 1.19, 6.74 and 60.70 consequently. The present investigation was carried out to detect the status of different productive and reproductive parameters of Black Bengal and Crossbred goats at Bandaikhara village under Atrai Upazilla of Naogaon district during the period of September to December/2005. The average age at first sign of heat of Black Bengal goats was better than that of Crossbred goats. In Black Bengal goat the average age at first kidding was 360.5±10 days, whereas, in crossbred goats it was 411.5±15.5 day. Significantly (P<0.01) lower the post partum heat period in Black Bengal goat than the crossbred goat. The average kidding interval in Black Bengal and Crossbred goats were 179±20 and 270±22 days respectively and differences are statistically significant (P<0.01). The usual numbers of kids at one time in Black Bengal goats vary from single to quadruplet. On the other hand, litter size of crossbred goat was single or twin. The average birth weight of Black Bengal goat was lower than Crossbred goats, which are statistically significant (P<0.05). The average body weight gain after 365 days is better in Crossbred than Black Bengal goats and statistically significant (P<0.01). The average milk yield in Crossbred goat was 1.05 liter/day, whereas, in Black Bengal goat, it produces milk that only nourished its kids. It was concluded that the reproductive performance like early maturity, larger litter size, shorter postpartum period, minimum kidding interval are better in Black Bengal goat. On the other hand productive performance like higher birth weight, maximum body weight gain, high milk yield, longer lactation length are suitable in crossbred goat. Piglets from 51 litters were weighed weekly over a 5-wk lactation in an experiment that studied the effects of farrowing crate design and other factors on variation in piglet weight. Of two farrowing crates used, one had low horizontal bars that tended to impede access to the upper row of teats, while the other had angled vertical bars which permitted freer access. Fourteen-day weights were more uniform in the vertical-bar crates than in the horizontal-bar crates (P < 0.025), but the difference waned by day 35 (P > 0.05). There were no significant differences in mean body weight owing to crate type (P < 0.05) for any of the weekly measurements but, by day 14, there was a significant linear trend (P < 0.05) at decreasing mean body weight with increasing litter size. The interaction between crate type and litter size was significant at the later ages (P < 0.01 at day 35) because the linear trend was more pronounced for horizontal-bar crates than for vertical. Litters differed greatly in the uniformity of their body weights. Much of the variation became established in the first and, to a lesser extent, the second week after birth. In those weeks, weight gains were highly variable and were not closely related to weight at the beginning of the week. Thereafter, the established differences tended to be perpetuated to 35 d, because weight gains were largely proportional to body weight.
