In phase-partition fixation, tissue is immersed in a non-aqueous solvent at equilibrium with an aqueous solution of a fixing agent to minimize osmotic effects. Preservation of morphology afforded by phase-partition fixation using formalin and glutaraldehyde and several organic solvents was compared to aqueous 10% neutral buffered formalin fixation for five tissues. It was shown that phase-partition fixation can provide excellent fixation for light microscopy if the proper combinations of fixatives and solvents are used.

<p>A direct spectrofluorimetric method for the quantitative analysis of benomyl in natural waters is described. Benomyl is an instable, fluorescent fungicide that mainly decomposes into carbendazim and n-butyl-isocyanate in organic and aqueous solutions. The kinetics of benomyl solvolysis reactions were investigated in organic solvents (methanol and acetonitrile) and in aqueous solvent systems, including β–cyclodextrin (β-CD), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC), cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), cetyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (CTAOH), Brij-700, Triton X-100 and water, at different pH and/or NaOH concentrations. The benomyl fluorescence signal was found to be quasi-completely stable in 10<sup>-2</sup> M NaOH aqueous solution, various alkaline (10<sup>-2</sup> M NaOH) organized media, β-CD neutral solution and Triton X-100 aqueous solutions of different pH. Based on these results, a direct spectrofluorimetric analytical method was developed for the determination of benomyl in 10<sup>-2</sup> M NaOH aqueous solution and Triton X-100 solutions (pH7 and 10<sup>-2</sup> M NaOH), with wide linear dynamic range (LDR) values of two to three orders of magnitude, very low limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) values of, respectively, 0.002-0.5 ng/mL and 0.007-2.0 ng/mL, and small relative standard deviation (RSD) values of 0.2-1.7 %, according to the medium. This direct spectrofluorimetric method was applied to the evaluation of benomyl residues in natural waters, with satisfactory recovery values (87-94%).</p>

AbstractIn the process of polymerization of aniline in aqueous solution, different kinds or volumes of organic solvents were added. The effects of the organic solvents on the morphology, structure, conductivity and water-dispersity of the resulting polyaniline (PANI) were investigated with the aid of SEM, UV-Vis, FT-IR and Raman spectra and conductivity measurements. The results showed that the weak H-bond interactions between PANI and the solvents might play an important role in forming uniform nanofibers with relatively high conductivity and good waterdispersity. However, excessive addition of organic solvents led to the aggregation of the nanofibers and the corresponding PANI had a bad water-dispersity.

Phase partition fixation permits fixation of tissue in a nonaqueous environment, thus eliminating osmotic effects. It was shown in an earlier investigation that retention of protein in liver blocks can be improved by phase partition fixation. By using radioisotopic labeling techniques, the effects of phase partition fixation on lipid retention during fixation, dehydration, and clearing have been determined and compared with those of standard aqueous fixation techniques. In this article we show that retention of total lipid in liver blocks following phase partition fixation using formalin was comparable to or better than that with aqueous formalin fixation and processing. Fixation with glutaraldehyde using phase partition fixation resulted in somewhat greater loss of total lipid than that observed for aqueous buffered glutaraldehyde-fixed blocks.

The metastable zone width of an aqueous solution of KCI was measured as a function of the time and temperature of overheating above the equilibrium solubility temperature. It has been found that when the experiments follow close upon one another, the parameters of the preceding experiment affect the results of the experiment to follow.The results are interpreted in terms of hypotheses advanced in the literature to account for the effect of thermal history of solution. The plausibility and applicability of these hypotheses are assessed for the given cause of aqueous solution of a well soluble electrolyte.

AbstractIn this study, a new optical method is presented to determine the concentrations of NaCl and glucose aqueous solutions by using a thermo-elastic optical indicator microscope. By measuring the microwave near-field distribution intensity, concentration changes of NaCl and glucose aqueous solutions were detected in the 0–100 mg/ml range, when exposed to microwave irradiation at 12 GHz frequency. Microwave near-field distribution intensity decreased as the NaCl or glucose concentration increased due to the changes of the absorption properties of aqueous solution. This method provides a novel approach for monitoring NaCl and glucose in biological liquids by using a CCD sensor capable of visualizing NaCl and glucose concentrations without scanning.

The spontaneous formation of giant (diameter > 10 μm) vesicles from a number of phospholipids in excess aqueous solution has been studied by light-microscopy. Electrically neutral as well as charged phospholipids swell to form giant vesicles only if the lipids are in the fluid phase. This shows that electrostatic repulsion alone cannot explain the spontaneous formation of giant vesicles. The results confirm the suggestion that steric forces between extended membranes play a significant part in this process.
