Using a high precision image scanner and a PDP-8/F minicomputer, we have developed a program system for interactive measurements on microscopic images. By giving simple keyboard commands, the operator can run the image scanner and manipulate the digitized images. The interface between the operator and the microscope-computer system is a Tektronix 4010 graphic terminal. The system allows objects to be isolated and parameters to be calculated from each object, e.g., parameters characterizing shape of the object, irregularity in light transmission over the object, area, integrated light transmission, etc. Objects are isolated and parameters are calculated under complete operator control using interactive computer graphics technique. Calculated parameters may be stored in dedicated data records, which are stored in files for later statistical analysis. The system also includes a statistical evaluation part. Technically, the system consists of a command scanner, which translates commands into internal representation, a parser, which checks the syntax of the commands, and an interpreter, which executes the commands. The system is designed so that new commands can be added easily.

AbstractThis work presents a statistical analysis of the labor market in the electronic University Job Bank (BUT) system from its implementation on July 24, 2001 to December 31, 2006, which is the closing date for this analysis. The requirements for the 23,235 positions offered by the 5,619 companies registered in the BUT are reviewed. The competencies required of university students by these companies are also analyzed with a year by year chart of the most demanded competencies concluding with the findings of the basic competencies for the BUT through the frequency and consistency of six years of service of the computer system.

AbstractDespite ongoing efforts to compile both Andean khipus and their written colonial references, initiatives in this domain have emphasized the benefits of aggregation vis-à-vis preservation and diffusion, largely forgoing opportunities to analyze khipu data in aggregate. This article introduces multivariate statistical analysis to colonial khipu texts, enlisting the aid of a heretofore little-studied source: the Textos Andinos, a compilation of sixteenth-century Spanish transcriptions of Indigenous khipu “readings.” The largest syntactically annotated corpus of khipu transcriptions to date is compiled. Textual interpretation informs an exegetical typology of “paper khipus”—a division of the texts into distinguishable categories. The initial typology is expanded using the outcome of its statistical evaluation. Pre- versus postconquest content and the incorporation of currency emerge as the primary distinguishing attributes of khipu transcriptions. The expanded typology in turn enables the assessment of previous hypotheses in the study of paper khipus, responding to criticisms of their generalizability; suggestions of a diminishment in khipu complexity following the Spanish conquest are revisited and corroborated to this effect. A corpus-based study of khipu transcriptions offers a promising inroad to negotiating the highly mediated conditions of their original creation while expanding the study of khipus in the early colonial Andes. The aggregative methodology is proposed to ethnohistorians as an additional strategy for complementing and enriching historical interpretation.

A computer graphics system for draftspeople was developed and evaluated by Bell Telephone Laboratories. There was no significant difference found in drafting time between the manual mode and the computer system. The graphics system must have more capabilities than just drawing to be economical.

Measurement results of continuous quantities are always more or less imprecise. This imprecision is different from errors. The most suitable mathematical model to describe imprecision is by special fuzzy subsets of the set of real numbers R, called characterizing functions. The statistical analysis of fuzzy measurement data is subject of this paper.

Transitivity is one of the most important mechanisms to form a social network in a human society, but it remains unclear how such behavior is quantified and affected by some key factors, including the social environment and the participants' characters. This study investigates the sharing behavior based on the notion of transitivity and an experiment is conducted on a variety of populations from kindergarteners to teenagers. The key effects that have high impacts to the sharing behavior are identified from the statistical analysis of the experimental results. A mathematical model is built for the experimental results and its performance compared with other models is also illustrated.

In this study we have aimed to present statistical evaluation of changes in the surface roughness of the solid tone areas on CtP flexo printing plate in dependence of print run. Changes in flexo plate surface roughness is influenced by the plate-making process, printing pressure and speed, the interaction with the ink and printing substrate and by the wear of the printing plate due to long print-runs. Thus, the aim of this research was to evaluate the changes in the amplitude surface roughness parameters (Ra, Rp, Rv and Rz), between the printing plates used for different print runs. In the experiment, we have employed three sets of CtP flexo printing plates, for three colors-cyan, magenta and blue. The first set was not used for printing, the second was used to print 7 rolls of substrate and the third is used to print 11 rolls of printing substrate. The amplitude surface roughness parameters were compared by applying independentsamples t-test method using the software SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) with a 0.05 significance level. Statistical analysis revealed that the difference between the amplitude surface roughness parameters measured on CtP flexo printing plates are significant with a 95% confidence level, whereas the statistical significance pointed out that with the longer print runs, the difference will be strongly expressed.

Forensic genetics brings together all the genetic knowledge necessary to solve specific legal problems. In recent decades, new techniques have shown the potential of DNA as a profiling system. These advances have arrived hand in hand with other improvements for the communication of test results, with the introduction of statistical evaluation. In the collective imagination, nourished by TV series such as CSI, forensic evidence is presented as one hundred percent certain, when reality is different. However, statistical analysis has allowed us to turn from handcrafted forensic medicine, based on intuition and experience, to tests based on evidence and data, where uncertainty is quantified in probabilistic terms.
