This study was to investigate the relationship of serum mitochondrial coupling factor 6 (CF6) with blood lipid and glucose in patients with type 2 diabetic retinopathy. A total of 180 patients with type 2 diabetes enrolled in our hospital from January 2015 to September 2017 were selected as the research objects. They were divided in accordance with fundus fluorescence angiography (FFA) into normal diabetic retinopathy (NDR) group, background diabetic retinopathy (BDR) group as well as proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), with 60 cases in each group, and at the same time, another 60 healthy subjects were selected as normal control (NC) group. Serum CF6, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2 h postprandial plasma glucose (2hPG), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), total cholesterol as well as triglyceride were measured in the groups and the relationship of serum CF6 with related indicators was analyzed. The level of serum CF6 in type 2 diabetes group was higher than that in NC group and there was statistically significant difference among the groups with the occurrence and aggravation of retinopathy ( P < 0.05). Correlation analysis showed that serum CF6 was positively correlated with FPG, 2hPG, HbA1c, and LDL-C of statistical significance ( P < 0.05) and negatively correlated with HDL-C of statistical significance ( P < 0.05). The results of multiple step regression analysis showed that HbA1c and LDL-C were independent risk factors for CF6. In conclusion, the serum CF6 of patients with diabetic retinopathy increases with aggravation of the disease, taking a part in the occurrence and development of retinopathy together with the disorder of blood glucose and lipid metabolism.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) has complex multifactorial pathogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the association of complement pathway genes with susceptibility to DR. Eight haplotype-tagging SNPs ofSERPING1andC5were genotyped in 570 subjects with type 2 diabetes: 295 DR patients (138 nonproliferative DR [NPDR] and 157 proliferative DR [PDR]) and 275 diabetic controls. Among the sixC5SNPs, a marginal association was first detected between rs17611 and total DR patients (P=0.009, OR = 0.53 for recessive model). In stratification analysis, a significant decrease in the frequencies of G allele and GG homozygosity for rs17611 was observed in PDR patients compared with diabetic controls (Pcorr= 0.032, OR = 0.65 andPcorr= 0.016, OR = 0.37, resp.); it was linked with a disease progression. A haplotype AA defined by the major alleles of rs17611 and rs1548782 was significantly predisposed to PDR with increased risk of 1.54 (Pcorr= 0.023). Regarding other variants inC5andSERPING1, none of the tagging SNPs had a significant association with DR and its subgroups (allP>0.05). Our study revealed an association between DR andC5polymorphisms with clinical significance, whereasSERPING1is not a major genetic component of DR. Our data suggest a link of complement pathway with DR pathogenesis.

Aims. The purpose of the study was to investigate the differences of adenosine, adenine, inosine, xanthine, hypoxanthine, and uric acid concentrations in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and diabetic retinopathy and assess the relationship between purine metabolites and disease.Materials and Methods. The study group consisted of 114 subjects which were divided into three groups: control (n=40), type 2 diabetes without retinopathy (n=35), and type 2 diabetes with retinopathy (n=39). Levels of metabolites were measured in plasma of all participants.Results. There is a significant increase of levels of adenosine (0.94±0.17 mg/L versus0.17±0.01 mg/L,P<0.001), inosine (0.297±0.078 mg/L versus0.086±0.010 mg/L,P<0.001), xanthine (1.01±0.21 mg/L versus0.54±0.05 mg/L,P=0.009), and uric acid (70.55±3.97 mg/L versus53.81±2.36 mg/L,P<0.001) with diabetic retinopathy compared to diabetes mellitus. The levels of adenine, hypoxanthine, and xanthine oxidase did not change. Uric acid, xanthine, inosine, and adenosine correlated positively with systolic blood pressure and urea nitrogen.Conclusions. The levels of adenosine, inosine, uric acid, and xanthine may be useful for monitoring the progression of diabetic retinopathy and evaluating the treatment.

Blood-based bioenergetic profiling has promising applications as a minimally invasive biomarker of systemic bioenergetic capacity. In the present study, we examined peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) mitochondrial function and brain morphology in a cohort of African Americans with long-standing Type 2 diabetes. Key parameters of PBMC respiration were correlated with white matter, gray matter, and total intracranial volumes. Our analyses indicate that these relationships are primarily driven by the relationship of systemic bioenergetic capacity with total intracranial volume, suggesting that systemic differences in mitochondrial function may play a role in overall brain morphology.

Objective: To determine the relationship of the perception of lifestyle with the level of physical activity in people with type 2 diabetes and without type 2 diabetes. Study Design: Analytical cross-sectional observational study in Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico. Methodology: Sample composed of 100 people with type 2 diabetes and 100 people without type 2 diabetes, the lifestyle questionnaire and IPAQ questionnaire were used. Descriptive statistics were calculated for sociodemographic variables; it was calculated Chi-square test and Odds Ratio.  To demonstrate the statistical significance of results, the value of P was set at .05. Statistical analysis was performed in STATA 13.0 ®. Results: In patients with Type 2 Diabetes predominated females, married, who never went school and elementary and BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2; among patients without Type 2 Diabetes, predominant males, singles, went school or university, BMI ≥25 kg/m2; no relationship was found between lifestyle perception and level of physical activity in adults with type 2 diabetes (X² = 0.0022 gl 1 P = .96) neither it was found a significant relationship between lifestyle perception and level of physical activity in adults without type 2 diabetes (X² = 5.23 gl 1 P = .02 RM = 2.85 95% CI = 0.80 to 10.4). Conclusion: The results show that self-perception of lifestyle and physical activity is different in people with less age, more schooling, males.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease that characterized by high blood sugar levels. This condition is often not noticed immediately and usually patient starting to realize it when complications have been occurred. A long-term complication of type 2 DM that occurred in men is erectile dysfunction (ED). ED is a condition when a person is unable to achieve or maintain an erection for sexual intercourse. One factor that influence the occurrence of ED and its severity in type 2 DM patients is the duration of the disease. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship of type 2 DM duration and the occurrence of ED. Methods: This study is an observational analytic cross-sectional study conducted at the Puskesmas (Public Health Center) Denpasar Barat I. The research data was obtained through medical record data and fill the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire on 36 type 2 DM patients aged around 40-60 years. The statistical analysis used was Fisher's exact test. Results: The results showed that of the 36 samples, 19 (52.8%) samples had type 2 DM <24 months and 17 (47.2%) samples had type 2 DM >24 months. It was found that 5 (13.9%) samples did not experience ED while the rest experienced ED with different severity. There was a significant relationship between the type 2 DM duration and the occurrence of erectile dysfunction at Puskesmas Denpasar Barat I (p = 0.022). Conclusion: Study has found that type 2 DM patients with the longer duration (>24 months)  have a higher occurrence of ED and tended to be more severe compared to those with shorter duration (<24 months). Further studies should be performed with higher number of patients and more controlled risk factor so it will be more accurate in determining the relationship between the duration of type 2 DM and ED.
