Parental Nurturance in the Standard Cross-Cultural Sample

In recent years attachment theory has matured into a wide-ranging conceptual framework with sufficient power to explain important features of individual and social variability across societies. In the research reported here, the empirical work directed by attachment theory is used to expand existing codes to measure more fully those aspects of parent-child interaction that facilitate or retard the child’s development. This article presents the coding system and scores on parental nurturance for each of the societies of the Standard Cross-Cultural Sample (SCCS). Articles (in press) will present all the evidence on parental nurturance available in the standard bibliography as well as new research examining ways that parental nurturance may be incorporated into models integrating environmental, psychological, and social processes.

Abstract Objective Develop a cross-cultural conceptual framework for the validation of the Advanced Clinical Solutions (ACS) Social Perception subtest to effectively assess Latinx populations. Method The framework serves to examine and evaluate the composition of the normative sample of the ACS-SP using eight key variables taken from the ECLECTIC framework, specifically education (e.g., literacy), acculturation levels (e.g., race, ethnicity), language (e.g., proficiency), economics (e.g., SES), communication styles, testing comfort, intelligence conceptualization, and context of immigration (Fujii, 2018). In addition, the model assesses the normative sample in reference to the intersectionality of identities (Cole, 2009; Wadsworth et al., 2016) across cultural and demographic variables that may influence the expression of emotion, and consequently, the interpretation of ACS-SP results. The model applies an Etic-Emic approach to address the question of cross-cultural validity of the ACS-SP (Cheung, van de Vijver & Leong, 2011). Finally, the model can be applied to examine the ACS-SP in relation to cultural intelligence (CQ), a more recently established construct defined as an individual’s ability to function effectively inter-culturally (Ang, Rockstuhl, & Tan, 2015). Discussion A large body of research has shown that the expression and measurement of social cognitive abilities are greatly influenced by cultural factors (Elfenbein & Ambady, 2002). For example, studies have shown that the expression of these abilities may be greatly influenced by cultural differences in display rules. Likewise, it is equally important to consider key cultural variables such as those related to socioeconomic status (SES), demographics, and identity in the neuropsychological assessment of social perception in Latinx populations. The nature of mother–child interaction in autism and the maternal approach characteristics that elicit social response in children with autism were examined in two studies. Mother–child play sessions of 24 preschool children with autism and 24 typically developing preschoolers were compared in Study 1, and play sessions of 9 mothers with their autistic child and with their nonautistic child were compared in Study 2. Mother–child interactions were coded using the Approach Withdrawal Interaction Coding System to quantify maternal approach behaviors and child responses. Results of Study 1 indicate that, although the quantity of approaches did not differ between mothers with their autistic children and mothers with their nonautistic children, there were qualitative differences. Mothers used more physical contact, more high-intensity behaviors, and fewer social verbal approaches with autistic children. Results of Study 2 replicated these findings with mothers showing a similar pattern of approach toward their autistic children but not their nonautistic children. Although autistic children displayed lower contingency to maternal approaches in general, they showed greater responsiveness to approaches involving increased physical proximity and/or containing nonverbal object use. Mothers socially engaged both autistic and nonautistic children. The implications for parent training and intervention are discussed.

Contrastive analysis of Chinese and American maternal affective speech acts revealed significant differences in the quantity of child-directed positive and negative speech acts. There were also important qualitative differences in specific types of maternal affective input. Results are consistent with available knowledge of cross-cultural differences in parenting approaches, and have implications for cross-cultural emotion and pragmatic development. Differential cultural values were addressed to account for the observed linguistic behaviors.

Psychological research in small-scale societies is crucial for what it stands to tell us about human psychological diversity. However, people in these communities, typically Indigenous communities in the global South, have been underrepresented and sometimes misrepresented in psychological research. Here I discuss the promises and pitfalls of psychological research in these communities, reviewing why they have been of interest to social scientists and how cross-cultural comparisons have been used to test psychological hypotheses. I consider factors that may be undertheorized in our research, such as political and economic marginalization, and how these might influence our data and conclusions. I argue that more just and accurate representation of people from small-scale communities around the world will provide us with a fuller picture of human psychological similarity and diversity, and it will help us to better understand how this diversity is shaped by historical and social processes. Science designed to understand the effects of diversity in organizations and science designed to understand the processes and outcomes of emotional labor have accumulated with increased rapidity, but rarely have the two research streams merged. We present a conceptual framework to integrate diversity with emotional labor, with the goals of prompting new research pathways and forging better understanding of the role emotional labor processes play in diverse work environments. This multilevel framework allows for conceptualizing and testing ideas about the interplay of both of these concepts at the individual and team levels, and introduces potential boundary conditions for their effects.

Qualitative research is a field of study that deals with exploring, describing, and interpreting the innate quality of entities and the social processes. In the recent past, an extensive growth in qualitative field of research has been witnessed, particularly in the occupational settings. It is a dynamic and exhilarating area that seeks to explain the research observations by means of insights which are hard to produce with quantitative methods. Most of the work is concerned with developing a theory (i.e., an inductive way to find out new solutions or identify new questions related to social being). In this chapter, the author has targeted the segment which is mostly the students pursuing research courses or conducting empirical work; the faculties and the mangers who are handling the diversity of the social beings at their workplaces, whose varied needs are persistently evolving, would be able to understand the notion of technique which is qualitative in nature. Certain studies conducted in past and present have also been illustrated to maintain the reader's interest.
