The Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) was administered to parents (N = 260; 171 mothers and 89 fathers) whose adolescent and young adult children died unexpectedly and violently by accident, homicide, or suicide. Summary statistics and reliability coefficients (Cronbach’ s a) for the nine subscales and the Global Severity Index were calculated. A comparison of means and standard deviations confirmed the expectation that this sample is dramatically different from the normative American community standard. Raw scores for the subscales were transformed into standardized T scores and critical values for a screening heuristic presented. An attempt to obtain construct validity using factor analysis suggested that a five-factor solution provided a description of this population of bereaved parents that is more insightful than the nine standard subscales of the BSI. Implications for both clinicians and future research are discussed.

BackgroundThe purpose of this study was to evaluate psychometric properties of the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) hostility and anxiety subscales in prison inmates.MethodsReliability and construct validity of the BSI hostility and anxiety subscales were examined using Cronbach's alphas, factor analysis, and hypothesis testing.ResultsOf the 373 male inmates, 63% were White with a mean age of 36 years. Cronbach's alphas for hostility and anxiety were 0.83 and 0.81, supporting internal consistency. Factor analysis demonstrated two dimensions, hostility and anxiety. Supporting construct validity, inmates with higher hostility as well as those with higher anxiety had a greater number of mentally unhealthy days and lower perceived control.ConclusionThe BSI hostility and anxiety subscales are reliable and valid for use in prison inmates.

Theoretischer Hintergrund: Bei retrospektiven Einschätzungen des Erlebens und Verhaltens werden meist Gedächtnis- und Urteilsfehler vermutet. Fragestellung: Wie zuverlässig sind retrospektive Symptomeinschätzungen in der Psychotherapie? Wie valide sind Therapieerfolgsmaße auf Basis retrospektiver Symptomeinschätzungen? Methode: Psychotherapiepatienten (N = 83) rekonstruieren zu Therapieende ihre Symptomausprägung vom Beginn der Therapie auf dem Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) und dem Beck Depressions Inventar (BDI). Ergebnisse: Neben einer bedeutsamen retrospektiven Überschätzung zeigen retrospektive und reguläre Prä-Messungen bedeutsame Zusammenhänge. Das Ausmaß der retrospektiven Symptomeinschätzungen ist vom Therapieerfolg weitgehend unabhängig. Prä-Post Effektstärken auf Basis der retrospektiven Prä-Messungen zeigen vergleichbare Zusammenhänge mit anderen Therapieerfolgsmaßen wie reguläre Prä-Post Effektstärken. Schlussfolgerungen: Retrospektive Symptomeinschätzungen sind zuverlässig aber nicht akkurat. Pauschale Annahmen über Urteilsfehler und eine wenig valide Darstellung des Therapieerfolgs bei retrospektiver Erfassung von Symptomen müssen zurückgewiesen werden.

This study investigates the equivalent factorial structure of the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) in clinical and nonclinical Jordanian populations, using both exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The 53-item checklist was administered to 647 nonclinical participants and 315 clinical participants. Eight factors emerged from the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) for the nonclinical sample, and six factors emerged for the clinical sample. When tested by parallel analysis (PA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), the results reflected a unidimensional factorial structure in both samples. Furthermore, multigroup CFA showed invariance between clinical and nonclinical unidimensional models, which lends further support to the evidence of the unidimensionality of the BSI. The study suggests that the BSI is a potentially useful measure of general psychological distress in clinical and nonclinical population. Ideas for further research are recommended.

Zusammenfassung Hintergrund In der Literatur lassen sich Hinweise darauf finden, dass bei Medizinstudierenden häufig risikohafter Alkoholkonsum vorliegt. Ziel der Arbeit Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist, den Alkoholkonsum Medizinstudierender im Zeitverlauf zu untersuchen. Material und Methoden Von 2011 bis 2017 wurden Dresdner Medizinstudierende des zweiten Semesters mit dem „Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test“ (AUDIT) befragt. Mögliche beeinflussende Faktoren des Alkoholkonsums wie Alter, Geschlecht, psychische Belastung („Brief-Symptom Inventory-18“ [BSI-18]), Jahrgang und Abiturnote der Medizinstudierenden wurden in einer Regressionsanalyse geprüft. Ergebnisse Auffällige Scores im AUDIT wiesen 47 % der Studierenden auf. Die männlichen Studierenden zeigten verglichen mit ihren Kommilitoninnen signifikant höhere Scores (6,73 vs. 4,64; p < 0,001). Aus der Regressionsanalyse gingen das Geschlecht (p = 0,000) sowie die psychische Belastung (p = 0,041; Frauen: p = 0,000) als beeinflussende Faktoren des Alkoholkonsums hervor. Schlussfolgerung Die Medizinstudierenden des zweiten Semesters zeigen häufig problematischen Alkoholkonsum, wobei dies v. a. für die männlichen Studierenden gilt. Der Alkoholkonsum von Medizinstudierenden scheint sich von 2011 bis 2017 nicht zu verändern. Die psychische Belastung stand überwiegend bei den weiblichen Medizinstudierenden mit dem Alkoholkonsum in Zusammenhang.
