Self Help Groups (SHGs) are meant to empower women both socially and economically. They encourage women to participate in decision making in the household, community and local domestic sector and prepare rural women to take up leadership positions. This study examines the pre-SHG and post-SHG status of rural SHG members in Puri district of Odisha. On the basis of primary data analysis, the study finds that SHGs have not only produced tangible assets and improved the living conditions of the members, but has also helped in changing much of their social outlook and attitudes. In the study area, SHGs have served the cause of women empowerment, social solidarity and socio-economic betterment of the rural poor.

This paper have been discussed on Empowerment of Women in India covering variety of problems and issues, micro, macro and regional levels, and almost all general aspects of related to women empowerment have been studies by social sciences. Micro-nance has emerged as a powerful tool for women empowerment in the new economy. In India, micronance distribution is mainly dominated by Self Help Groups (SHGs). It aims at providing a cost effective mechanism for providing nancial services to the poor section of the society. As apparent from the preceding detailed discussion on the existing literature on the empowerment of women at different levels in India, attempts made so far suffer discerningly although with the following signicant limitations: (i) All the studies reveals a predominant bias of being macro level studies. Such studies by their very nature do not touch the core of reality, since it is not possible to know from the inner base of the mountain, the problem. The correct approach necessary is to dissect the problem into small pieces and then make an intensive effort to assess the reality; (ii) in the present development context in India; rapid changes are taking place on the economic scene, which bring in their trail, far reaching changes in the social, cultural, and political aspects of life. Therefore, even though a number of micro-studies existing, initiating of a new study in this area would have undiluted importance as such an attempt is bound to throw up several new facts in any empirical exercise having a bearing on policy issues. Thus, on its own, the necessity of a new micro study remains evergreen.

Women are the nucleus of our civilization. They have different roles to play in the ever changing social set-up. Women’s development is directly related with the nation development. With the dawn of independence our constitution guaranteed gender equality and a large number of schemes and programs have been initiated for women’s development. Women usually falls under the powerless group which necessitates the programmes ensured empowerment of women. Now a days; empowerment especially women empowerment has become a buzz word especially in the context of development of rural poor and women. Empowering the poor for their development is one of the top most prioritized agenda in development paradigm of every developing and underdeveloped country. Empowerment of women may normally mean equal access to & control over important productive resources. Women empowerment, therefore, may normally describe as a process by which women would be able to develop their confidence level & increase their inner strength & self reliance to decide and determine their important choices in life. The socio-economic empowerment of women achieved through SHG may be divided into dimensions of Economic, Social, Political, Personal, Institutional, Organisational, and Familial.
