Benzylamine tartrate (m.p. 63°C) seems to be a better and more convenient substrate for making carbon films than any of those previously proposed. Using it in the manner described, it is easy consistently to make batches of specimen grids as open as 200 mesh with no broken squares, and without individual handling of the grids. Benzylamine tartrate (hereafter called B.T.) is a viscous liquid when molten, which sets to a glass. Unlike polymeric substrates it does not swell before dissolving; such swelling of the substrate seems to be a principal cause of breakage of carbon film. Mass spectroscopic examination indicates a vapor pressure less than 10−9 Torr at room temperature.

The article investigates the reflection of a longitudinal damped travelling wave from the transverse notch and its movement along an infinite rod plunged into viscous liquid. The simplest model for the stress deformed state in the notch zone is applied. The solution is found to depend on the parameters of the liquid and damping characteristics in the material of the rod and the surrounding liquid. The solution to the inverse problem makes it possible to define the coordinate of the notch and the parameter that contains its depth and length using data on both the incident and reflected waves at the observation point.

Velocity profiles and pumping capacity have been determined using a thermistor anemometer in a vessel equipped with a screw impeller. In region of the creeping flow of a Newtonian liquid, i.e. for Re <15, the dimensionless pumping capacity is dependent on the geometrical arrangement of the mixing system. The efficiency was assessed of individual configuration from the value energy criterion expressing the dimensionless power requirements for recirculation of a highly viscous liquid in a vessel equipped with a screw impeller.
