Björk’s collaboration with the director Lars von Trier on the film Dancer in the Dark was marked by well-publicized personal and aesthetic differences. Their work nevertheless shares an intense preoccupation with the nature and quality of sound. Björk’s soundtrack systematically explores the boundaries between music and noise, and the title of von Trier’s film itself presupposes a heightened attention to aural detail. This paper proposes a theoretical context for understanding Björk’s music in the light of her work with von Trier. Whereas Björk’s soundtrack responds to the visual and narrative stimuli of von Trier’s film, the use of sound in her album Vespertine thematicizes more familiar Björk subjects: the relationship between music, landscape and the natural world, and Björk’s own (constructed) sense of Nordic musical identity. By placing Vespertine alongside Björk’s music for Dancer in the Dark, the sense of ‘hyperreality’ that defines both also emerges as a primary characteristic of her work.

Wonder, Horror, Mystery is a dialogue between two friends, both notable arts critics, that takes the form of a series of letters about movies and religion. One of the friends, J.M. Tyree, is a film critic, creative writer, and agnostic, while the other, Morgan Meis, is a philosophy PhD, art critic, and practicing Catholic. The question of cinema is raised here in a spirit of friendly friction that binds the personal with the critical and the spiritual. What is film? What’s it for? What does it do? Why do we so intensely love or hate films that dare to broach the subjects of the divine and the diabolical? These questions stimulate further thoughts about life, meaning, philosophy, absurdity, friendship, tragedy, humor, death, and God. The letters focus on three filmmakers who challenged secular assumptions in the late 20th century and early 21st century through various modes of cinematic re-enchantment: Terrence Malick, Lars von Trier, and Krzysztof Kieślowski. The book works backwards in time, giving intensive analysis to Malick’s To The Wonder (2012), Von Trier’s Antichrist (2009), and Kieślowski’s Dekalog (1988), respectively, in each of the book’s three sections. Meis and Tyree discuss the filmmakers and films as well as related ideas about philosophy, theology, and film theory in an accessible but illuminating way. The discussion ranges from the shamelessly intellectual to the embarrassingly personal. Spoiler alert: No conclusions are reached either about God or the movies. Nonetheless, it is a fun ride.

A arte do cinema possui especificidades materiais e formais em sua construção enquanto linguagem, tendo em vista que se constitui como um sistema de significação com funcionamento específico, o que o torna diferente das linguagens verbal, sonora, visual e de outras formas de expressão. Compreendemos que a importância da técnica de montagem na organização e na concepção da narrativa fílmica era fundamental para os realizadores e os teóricos do cinema desde o início do século XX, pois os diversos efeitos conferidos à significação a partir desse artifício técnico eram investigados e experimentados. Em relação à construção temporal nas composições fílmicas lineares, geralmente a noção de anterioridade e posterioridade é construída na ordem direta do tempo cronológico que corresponde ao fluxo narrativo e move sua continuidade. A dimensão do tempo possui a peculiaridade de se desenvolver em valores formais específicos, de organizar o espaço e outros elementos diegéticos, como a música, em uma série temporal, bem como conferir a impressão de realidade ao cinema. Observaremos, portanto, algumas formas peculiares da montagem influenciar a construção temporal dos filmes. Dessa maneira, analisaremos trechos dos filmes Gata velha ainda mia (2013), de Rafael Primot; 2001, uma odisseia no espaço (1968), de Stanley Kubrick e Melancolia (2011), de Lars von Trier, para comentar especificidades da montagem na linguagem sincrética.
