Owing to the limited installation space and duct size, coupled fittings are common in the duct systems of buildings. The coupling effect leads to changes in drag and fan energy consumption. This study investigates duct drag and flow field characteristics under coupling conditions. Experiments and numerical simulations with the Reynolds stress model are conducted. Flow field changes, flow field deformation, and drag changes in the duct are analyzed. Regardless of the coupling form, the velocity near the inner arc is fast, whereas that near the outer arc is slow. Under three different coupling connection conditions (S-shaped, L-shaped, and U-shaped), the outlet velocity gradient of the U-shaped coupling connection is the least obvious. After the fluid flows through the bend, a significant centerline velocity reduction can be observed, even greater than that in the bend. The lowest centerline velocity lies within the range of 2.5 D to 4.5 D after the bend. Coupling connection has an insignificant effect on upstream duct resistance. The resistance of single bend is less than that of the downstream bend for the coupled bend and greater than that of the upstream bend under coupling conditions. Practical application: Coupling effect is common in practical application of ventilation engineering. This effect leads to the change of fluid resistance loss of ducts and pipes. However, few researchers focus on this effect. This study finds that regardless of the coupling form, the velocity near the inner arc is fast, whereas that near the outer arc is slow. It means the guide vane should be set near inner arc. L-shaped coupling connection has the largest downstream piping resistance. The resistance of the downstream piping under S-shaped coupling is the least, thus L-shaped coupling connection should be avoided as far as possible in practical application.

The flow field characteristics in U-typed bend has been extensively studied for transit time ultrasonic flowmeters designing, but for the flowmeter with three-Z-shaped round pipe there is still lack of corresponding research. This paper presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach for modeling of the three-Z-shaped ultrasonic flowmeter and studying of internal fluid field characteristics based on Reynolds stress model (RSM). The fluid velocity profile in the three ultrasound path is obtained using CFD and secondary flow in cross section also is analyzed. The simulation results show that the internal flow fields in the flowmeter are not fully developed turbulence with asymmetric axial velocity distribution and dramatic changes along the flow direction, and there are obvious secondary cross flows on theirs cross-sections. The CFD simulations provide useful insights into the flow field associated with ultrasonic flowmeters design.

Horizontal axis double-runner Francis turbines have great advantages in the development of small hydropower plants, but the arrangement of double runners aggravates the complexity of the water flow between runners, and the mutual influence of the two runners cannot be ignored. In order to explore the relationship between the performance and the internal flow field and investigate the pressure pulsation characteristics of the double-runner Francis turbine, the steady and unsteady numerical analysis of the full flow channel of a prototype turbine was carried out based on the Realizable k-epsilon model and the polyhedral mesh method. The results show that the relationship between the average efficiency of the two runners and the flow difference between the runners is negatively correlated. As the flow rate difference between the runners on both sides increases, the average efficiency of the runners decreases. The draft tube flow of a horizontal-axis turbine has a profound effect on the flow field characteristics in the runner. When the working conditions change, the turning and converging timing of the mainstream at the outlet of the two runners will change. The movement of the mainstream promotes the change in location of the dead water zone. The existence of the vortex zone makes the pressure distribution at the outlet of the runner uneven, which is an important reason for the asymmetry of the flow in the runner. The analysis of pressure pulsation and its frequency spectrum shows that when the working conditions change, the low-frequency, strong pressure pulsation area on the surface of the guide vane will regularly migrate between the two runners, while the high-frequency pressure pulsation that occurs in the bladeless zone will dissipate in the runner. The doubling of the blade frequency on the pressure surface and back surface of the blades gradually attenuates with the increase of frequency. The pressure pulsation attenuation on the surface of the high-position blade conforms to the linear law, and the attenuation of the pressure pulsation on the surface of the low-position blade conforms to the exponential law. The research in this paper provides a certain reference value for revealing the flow field mechanism and pressure pulsation characteristics of the double-runner Francis turbine.

In the design of afflux device for the air dryer safety valve, a rational structure can improve the gas flow condition and suppress the pulsation noise as well. This paper designed an afflux device required little installation space, its physical and mathematical model were built up then. The simulation of the internal flow field is processed with the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software Fluent, which interprets the device inner structure’s impact on the flow field characteristics and silencing performance. The numerical simulation provides the designers with a reliable approach for the design of the afflux device.

A new type of cylindrical gas film seal (CGFS) with a flexible support is proposed according to the working characteristics of the fluid dynamic seal in high-rotational-speed fluid machinery, such as aero-engines and centrifuges. Compared with the CGFS without a flexible support, the CGFS with flexible support presents stronger radial floating characteristics since it absorbs vibration and reduces thermal deformation of the rotor system. Combined with the structural characteristics of a film seal, an analytical model of CGFS with a flexible wave foil is established. Based on the fluid-structure coupling analysis method, the three-dimensional flow field of a straight-groove CGFS model is simulated to study the effects of operating and structural parameters on the steady-state characteristics and the effects of gas film thickness, eccentricity, and the number of wave foils on the equivalent stress of the flexible support. Simulation results show that the film stiffness increases significantly when the depth of groove increases. When the gas film thickness increases, the average equivalent stress of the flexible support first decreases and then stabilizes. Furthermore, the number of wave foils affects the average foils thickness. Therefore, when selecting the number of wave foils, the support stiffness and buffer capacity should be considered simultaneously.

In view of the difficulty of traditional hydrocyclones to meet the requirements of fine classification, a double-overflow three-product (internal overflow, external overflow and underflow) hydrocyclone was designed in this study. Numerical simulation and experimental research methods were used to investigate the effects of double-overflow flow field characteristics and structural parameters (i.e., internal vortex finder diameter and insertion depth) on separation performance. The research results showed that the larger the diameter of the internal vortex finder, the greater the overflow yield and the larger the cut size. The finest internal overflow product can be obtained when the internal vortex finder is 30 mm longer than the external vortex finder. The separation efficiency is highest when the internal vortex finder is 30 mm shorter than the external vortex finder.

Spray painting robots equipped with air spray guns have been widely used in the painting industry. In view of the low efficiency of single-nozzle air spray guns when spraying large targets, a new double-nozzle air spray gun structure was designed in this paper based on the Coanda effect of double jets. Firstly, a 3-D physical model of the double-nozzle air spray gun was built in Solidworks, in which unstructured grids were generated for the computational domain by ICEM. Secondly, the spray painting process was numerically modeled with the help of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS-Fluent 16.0. The two-phase spray flow was calculated by coupling a discrete phase model (DPM) and the Taylor analogy breakup (TAB) method. The TAB model was applied to predict the secondary break-up. The DPM model was applied to predict the droplet trajectories. The geometry of an air spray gun has a significant influence on the spray flow field characteristics. The influence of the air spray gun geometry on the interference spray flow field characteristics and coating film thickness distribution were investigated by changing the values of the distance between the centers of the two paint holes (L) and the angle between the axes of the two paint holes (θ). Numerical results show that the smaller L and θ are, the stronger the interference effect between the two jets, while the more concentrated the paint is in the central region of the target surface, the easier it is for overspray to occur. With increasing L and θ, the interference effect gradually decreased and the extension distance of the coating film along the x-axis gradually increased. However, if L and θ are too large, the interference effect will become too weak and the shape of the coating film will become a concave, with more paint on both side regions and less paint in the central region, which will cause an uneven coating film. From the simulation results, it can be concluded that a more uniform coating film can be obtained when L = 30 mm and θ = 10°. The effective coating width of the double-nozzle air spray gun was increased by 85.7% compared with the single-nozzle air spray gun, which improved the spraying efficiency.

In this paper, the numerical model of multi-stage liquid column scrubber was established. The flow field of liquid column scrubber with different inlet structure was respectively simulated by a commercial CFD code, Fluent. Considering the distribution characteristics of static pressure and velocity in the scrubber, this inlet type, single horizontal gas inlet with a notch at the bottom, is regarded as the most reasonable structure. On one hand, that structure has uniform distribution of static pressure. On the other hand, the velocity profile of its field presents saddle shape, i.e. the low central velocity exists between two peaks, which could contribute to weakening wall-flow phenomenon and obtaining uniform gas-liquid distribution.
