Abstract The 24–25 January 2000 eastern United States snowstorm was noteworthy as operational numerical weather prediction (NWP) guidance was poor for lead times as short as 36 h. Despite improvements in the forecast of the surface cyclone position and intensity at 1200 UTC 25 January 2000 with decreasing lead time, NWP guidance placed the westward extent of the midtropospheric, frontogenetically forced precipitation shield too far to the east. To assess the influence of initial condition uncertainties on the forecast of this event, an adjoint model is used to evaluate forecast sensitivities for 36- and 48-h forecasts valid at 1200 UTC 25 January 2000 using as response functions the energy-weighted forecast error, lower-tropospheric circulation about a box surrounding the surface cyclone, 750-hPa frontogenesis, and vertical motion. The sensitivities with respect to the initial conditions for these response functions are in general very similar: geographically isolated, maximized in the middle and lower troposphere, and possessing an upshear vertical tilt. The sensitivities are maximized in a region of enhanced low-level baroclinicity in the vicinity of the surface cyclone’s precursor upper trough. However, differences in the phase and structure of the gradients for the four response functions are evident, which suggests that perturbations could be constructed to alter one response function but not necessarily the others. Gradients of the forecast error response function with respect to the initial conditions are used in an iterative procedure to construct initial condition perturbations that reduce the forecast error. These initial condition perturbations were small in terms of both spatial scale and magnitude. Those initial condition perturbations that were confined primarily to the midtroposphere grew rapidly into much larger amplitude upper-and-lower tropospheric perturbations. The perturbed forecasts were not only characterized by reduced final time forecast error, but also had a synoptic evolution that more closely followed analyses and observations.

Abstract. Operational forecasting is hampered both by the rapid divergence of nearby initial conditions and by error in the underlying model. Interest in chaos has fuelled much work on the first of these two issues; this paper focuses on the second. A new approach to quantifying state-dependent model error, the local model drift, is derived and deployed both in examples and in operational numerical weather prediction models. A simple law is derived to relate model error to likely shadowing performance (how long the model can stay close to the observations). Imperfect model experiments are used to contrast the performance of truncated models relative to a high resolution run, and the operational model relative to the analysis. In both cases the component of forecast error due to state-dependent model error tends to grow as the square-root of forecast time, and provides a major source of error out to three days. These initial results suggest that model error plays a major role and calls for further research in quantifying both the local model drift and expected shadowing times.

<p>Forecasting high impact weather events is a major challenge for numerical weather prediction. Initial condition uncertainty plays a major role but so potentially do uncertainties arising from the representation of physical processes, e.g. cloud microphysics. In this project, we investigate the impact of these uncertainties for the forecast of cloud properties, precipitation and hail of a selected severe convective storm over South-Eastern Germany.<br>To investigate the joint impact of initial condition and parametric uncertainty a large ensemble including perturbed initial conditions and systematic variations in several cloud microphysical parameters is conducted with the ICON model (at 1 km grid-spacing). The comparison of the baseline, unperturbed simulation to satellite, radiosonde, and radar data shows that the model reproduces the key features of the storm and its evolution. In particular also substantial hail precipitation at the surface is predicted. Here, we will present first results including the simulation set-up, the evaluation of the baseline simulation, and the variability of hail forecasts from the ensemble simulation.<br>In a later stage of the project we aim to assess the relative contribution of the introduced model variations to changes in the microphysical evolution of the storm and to the fore- cast uncertainty in larger-scale meteorological conditions.</p>

Abstract Numerical weather prediction provides essential information of societal influence. Advances in the initial condition estimation have led to the improvement of the prediction skill. The process to produce the better initial condition (analysis) with the combination of short-range forecast and observation over the globe requires information about uncertainty of the forecast results to decide how much observation is reflected to the analysis and how far the observation information should be propagated. Forecast ensemble represents the error of the short-range forecast at the instance. The influence of observation propagating along with forecast ensemble correlation needs to be restricted by localized correlation function because of less reliability of sample correlation. So far, solitary radius of influence is usually used since there has not been an understanding about the realism of multiple scales in the forecast uncertainty. In this study, it is explicitly shown that multiple scales exist in short-range forecast error and any single-scale localization approach could not resolve this situation. A combination of Gaussian correlation functions of various scales is designed, which more weighs observation itself near the data point and makes ensemble perturbation, far from the observation position, more participate in decision of the analysis. Its outstanding performance supports the existence of multi-scale correlation in forecast uncertainty.

Abstract An ensemble Kalman filter based on the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is used to generate ensemble analyses and forecasts for the extratropical transition (ET) events associated with Typhoons Tokage (2004) and Nabi (2005). Ensemble sensitivity analysis is then used to evaluate the relationship between forecast errors and initial condition errors at the onset of transition, and to objectively determine the observations having the largest impact on forecasts of these storms. Observations from rawinsondes, surface stations, aircraft, cloud winds, and cyclone best-track position are assimilated every 6 h for a period before, during, and after transition. Ensemble forecasts initialized at the onset of transition exhibit skill similar to the operational Global Forecast System (GFS) forecast and to a WRF forecast initialized from the GFS analysis. WRF ensemble forecasts of Tokage (Nabi) are characterized by relatively large (small) ensemble variance and greater (smaller) sensitivity to the initial conditions. In both cases, the 48-h forecast of cyclone minimum SLP and the RMS forecast error in SLP are most sensitive to the tropical cyclone position and to midlatitude troughs that interact with the tropical cyclone during ET. Diagnostic perturbations added to the initial conditions based on ensemble sensitivity reduce the error in the storm minimum SLP forecast by 50%. Observation impact calculations indicate that assimilating approximately 40 observations in regions of greatest initial condition sensitivity produces a large, statistically significant impact on the 48-h cyclone minimum SLP forecast. For the Tokage forecast, assimilating the single highest impact observation, an upper-tropospheric zonal wind observation from a Mongolian rawinsonde, yields 48-h forecast perturbations in excess of 10 hPa and 60 m in SLP and 500-hPa height, respectively.

Abstract Despite considerable progress in mesoscale numerical weather prediction (NWP), the ability to predict summer severe rainfall (SSR) in terms of amount, location, and timing remains very limited because of its association with convective or mesoscale phenomena. In this study, two representative missed SSR events that occurred in the highly populated Great Lakes regions are analyzed within the context of moisture availability, convective instability, and lifting mechanism in order to help identify the possible causes of these events and improve SSR forecasts/nowcasts. Results reveal the following limitations of the Canadian regional NWP model in predicting SSR events: 1) the model-predicted rainfall is phase shifted to an undesired location that is likely caused by the model initial condition errors, and 2) the model is unable to resolve the echo-training process because of the weakness of the parameterized convection and/or coarse resolutions. These limitations are related to the ensuing model-predicted features: 1) vertical motion in the areas of SSR occurrence is unfavorable for triggering parameterized convection and grid-scale condensation; 2) convective available potential energy is lacking for initial model spinup and later for elevating latent heating to higher levels through parameterized convection, giving rise to less precipitation; and 3) the conversion of water vapor into cloud water at the upper and middle levels is underpredicted. Recommendations for future improvements are discussed.

Abstract The steering of a tropical cyclone (TC) vortex is commonly understood as the advection of the TC vortex by an “environmental wind.” In past studies, the environmental steering wind vector has been defined by the horizontal and vertical averaging of the horizontal winds in a box centered on the TC. The components of this environmental steering have been proposed as response functions to derive adjoint-derived sensitivities of TC zonal and meridional steering. The appropriateness of these response functions in adjoint sensitivity studies of TC steering is tested using a two-dimensional barotropic model and its adjoint for a 24-h forecast. It is found that these response functions do not produce sensitivities to TC steering because perturbations to the model initial conditions that change the final-time location of the TC also change the response functions in ways that have nothing to do with the steering of the TC at model verification. An alternate response function is proposed wherein the environmental steering vector is defined as the wind averaged over the response function box attributed to vorticity outside of that box. By redefining the response functions for the zonal and meridional steering as components of this environmental steering vector, the effect of small changes to the final-time location of the TC is removed, and the resultant sensitivity gradients can be shown to truly represent the sensitivity of TC steering to perturbations of the model forecast state.

The common approach to quantifying the precipitation forecast uncertainty is ensemble simulations where a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model is run for a number of cases with slightly different initial conditions. In practice, the spread of ensemble members in terms of flood discharge is used as a measure of forecast uncertainty due to uncertain precipitation forecasts. This study presents the uncertainty propagation of rainfall forecast into hydrological response with catchment scale through distributed rainfall-runoff modeling based on the forecasted ensemble rainfall of NWP model. At first, forecast rainfall error based on the BIAS is compared with flood forecast error to assess the error propagation. Second, the variability of flood forecast uncertainty according to catchment scale is discussed using ensemble spread. Then we also assess the flood forecast uncertainty with catchment scale using an estimation regression equation between ensemble rainfall BIAS and discharge BIAS. Finally, the flood forecast uncertainty with RMSE using specific discharge in catchment scale is discussed. Our study is carried out and verified using the largest flood event by typhoon “Talas” of 2011 over the 33 subcatchments of Shingu river basin (2,360 km2), which is located in the Kii Peninsula, Japan.

The initial conditions and the effective models are important for weather prediction. The efficiency of the forecast depends on the initial conditions. There are many processes that are used to generate the initial conditions, in this research will be generate the initial conditions by the regular perturbation method because it can be used to the big data for weather prediction. The weathers prediction by the single level primitive equation model (SILEPE). The data used in this study from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The forecast error between observed data and forecast data used to the Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD). The results to show that the regular perturbation method can be used to generate the initial conditions for the northeast monsoon prediction on 4 days forecast.

Abstract We test the impact of changing numerical precision upon forecasts using the chaotic Lorenz’95 system. We find that in comparison with discretization and numerical rounding errors, the dominant source of errors are the initial condition errors. These initial condition errors introduced into the Lorenz’95 system grow exponentially at a rate according to the leading Lyapunov exponent. Given this information we show that the number of bits necessary to represent the system state can be reduced linearly in time without significantly affecting forecast skill. This is in addition to any initial reduction in precision to that of the initial conditions and also implies the potential to reduce some storage costs. An approach to vary precision locally within simulations, guided by the direction of eigenvectors of the growth and decay of forecast error (the “singular vectors”), did not show a satisfying impact upon forecast skill in relation to cost savings that could be achieved with a uniform reduction of precision. The error in a selection of ECMWF forecasts as a function of the number of bits used to store them indicates that precision might also be reduced in operational systems.

Abstract The operational numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems at the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) indicated that the typhoon track forecasts made by the control member of the ensemble prediction system (EPS) tended to be worse than those made by the high-resolution global NWP. The control forecast of the EPS with horizontal triangular truncation at 319 wavenumbers and 60 vertical levels (T319/L60 resolution) was initialized by eliminating the higher-wavenumber components of the global analysis at T959/L60 resolution. When the data assimilation cycle was performed at the lower T319/L60 resolution, the forecast gave typhoon track forecasts closer to the high-resolution global NWP. Therefore, it stands to reason that the resolution transform of the initial condition must be responsible for the degradation of the typhoon track forecasts at least to considerable extent. To improve the low-resolution forecast, two approaches are tested in this study: 1) applying a smoother spectral truncation for the resolution transform and 2) performing noncycled lower-resolution data assimilation during preprocessing. Results from the single case study of Typhoon Nuri (2008) indicate almost no impact from the former approach, but a significant positive impact when using the latter approach. The results of this study illuminate the importance of considering a model’s resolving capability during data assimilation. Namely, if the initial conditions contain features caused by unresolved scales, degraded forecasts may result.
