Abstract To make the investigation of the temporal and spatial variations of atmospheric CO2 in and above the planetary boundary layer more flexible and economical, a lightweight observation system using a small unmanned aerial vehicle has been developed whose flight path is preset using GPS. The total weight of the CO2 measurement device carried inside the vehicle is about 3.5 kg. The device is equipped with both flow and pressure controllers and can be used to measure atmospheric CO2 from the ground surface to a maximum altitude of about 3000 m. The response time of the instrument is about 20 s, with a precision of about ±0.26 ppm. The observation system is easy to handle and can be easily and quickly deployed at a site to make frequent measurements in and above the boundary layer. Compared to the deployment of a piloted aircraft the system shows distinctive advantages, in addition to being more affordable. To test the system, preliminary measurements over a boreal forest area in Japan in the summer of 2000 have been conducted. The results indicate that the unmanned aerial vehicle measurement system provides an affordable platform that can be used to obtain quantitative understanding of the temporal and vertical variations of atmospheric CO2 in and above the planetary boundary layer.

Abstract. Atmospheric transport model errors are one of the main contributors to the uncertainty affecting CO2 inverse flux estimates. In this study, we determine the leading causes of transport errors over the US upper Midwest with a large set of simulations generated with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) mesoscale model. The various WRF simulations are performed using different meteorological driver datasets and physical parameterizations including planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes, land surface models (LSMs), cumulus parameterizations and microphysics parameterizations. All the different model configurations were coupled to CO2 fluxes and lateral boundary conditions from the CarbonTracker inversion system to simulate atmospheric CO2 mole fractions. PBL height, wind speed, wind direction, and atmospheric CO2 mole fractions are compared to observations during a month in the summer of 2008, and statistical analyses were performed to evaluate the impact of both physics parameterizations and meteorological datasets on these variables. All of the physical parameterizations and the meteorological initial and boundary conditions contribute 3 to 4 ppm to the model-to-model variability in daytime PBL CO2 except for the microphysics parameterization which has a smaller contribution. PBL height varies across ensemble members by 300 to 400 m, and this variability is controlled by the same physics parameterizations. Daily PBL CO2 mole fraction errors are correlated with errors in the PBL height. We show that specific model configurations systematically overestimate or underestimate the PBL height averaged across the region with biases closely correlated with the choice of LSM, PBL scheme, and cumulus parameterization (CP). Domain average PBL wind speed is overestimated in nearly every model configuration. Both planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) and PBL wind speed biases show coherent spatial variations across the Midwest, with PBLH overestimated averaged across configurations by 300–400 m in the west, and PBL winds overestimated by about 1 m s−1 on average in the east. We find model configurations with lower biases averaged across the domain, but no single configuration is optimal across the entire region and for all meteorological variables. We conclude that model ensembles that include multiple physics parameterizations and meteorological initial conditions are likely to be necessary to encompass the atmospheric conditions most important to the transport of CO2 in the PBL, but that construction of such an ensemble will be challenging due to ensemble biases that vary across the region.

We describe relationships between atmospheric CO2 concentration variations and CO2 source-sink distributions, at two important scales between the single plant and the whole earth: the vegetation canopy and the atmospheric planetary boundary layer. For both these scales, it is shown how knowledge of turbulence and scalar dispersion can be applied to infer CO2 source-sink distributions or fluxes from concentration measurements. At the canopy scale, the turbulent transfer of CO2 and other scalars is non-diffusive close to any point source or sink in the canopy, but diffusive at greater distances. This distinction leads to a physically tenable description of turbulent transfer, and thence to an 'inverse method' for finding the vertical profiles of sources and sinks in the canopy from measured concentration profiles. The method is tested with data from a wheat crop. At the scale of the planetary boundary layer, we consider the daily CO2 concentration drawdown (the depression of the near-surface CO2 concentration below the free-atmosphere value) of typically 20-40 ppm. This is determined by both the regionally averaged CO2 uptake at the surface and the growth of the daytime convective boundary layer (CBL). It is shown that, for a column of air which fills the CBL and is moved across the landscape by the mean wind, the net cumulative surface CO2 flux (in mol m-2) is given to a good approximation by h(t)[Cm(t) - C+]/V, where h(t) is CBL depth, Cm(t) the CO2 concentration in the CBL column in mol mol-1, C+ the concentration above the CBL, V the molar volume and time t is measured from the time at which Cm = C+ in the morning, typically about 0800 hours local time. The resulting CO2 flux estimates are regionally averaged over the trajectory followed by the column. This 'CBL budget method' for inferring surface fluxes is compared with direct measurements of CO2 fluxes, with satisfactory results. The technique has application to scalars other than CO2.

This paper describes the components and usage of an unmanned aerial vehicle developed for measuring turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer. A method of computing the time-dependent wind speed from a moving velocity sensor data is provided. The physical system built to implement this method using a five-hole probe velocity sensor is described along with the approach used to combine data from the different on-board sensors to allow for extraction of the wind speed as a function of time and position. The approach is demonstrated using data from three flights of two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) measuring the lower atmospheric boundary layer during transition from a stable to convective state. Several quantities are presented and show the potential for extracting a range of atmospheric boundary layer statistics.

Abstract Observations of the atmospheric CO2 concentration from a 90-m tower in Berezorechka, western Siberia, that have taken place since October 2001 were used to characterize CO2 variations over a vast boreal forest area. A new CO2 standard gas saving system was developed that reduced the consumption of standard gases and kept the analysis precision to within 0.3 μmol mol−1. The CO2 day-to-day variation correlated well with atmospheric stability. The average amplitudes of the diurnal variation at 80 m were found to be about 17 and 1.5 μmol mol−1 in July and December 2003, respectively. Extremely high daytime CO2 concentrations of greater than 400 μmol mol−1 were occasionally observed during the winter, which were caused by anticyclonic atmospheric conditions lasting more than several days. Afternoon CO2 values observed at the 80-m height agreed to within 0.4 μmol mol−1 with aircraft CO2 measurements taken in the planetary boundary layer; disagreements were found for anticyclonic conditions in the winter. The afternoon CO2 values reached their maximum in mid-January and their minimum late in July, with the seasonal amplitude of 30.9 μmol mol−1. Compared to observations at background stations, this observation tower recorded a larger seasonal amplitude and earlier occurrence of the seasonal minimum.

Abstract. We present here the first application of a lightweight unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system designed to measure turbulent properties and vertical latent heat fluxes (λE). Such measurements are crucial to improve our understanding of linkages between surface moisture supply and boundary layer clouds and phenomena such as atmospheric rivers. The application of UAVs allows for measurements on spatial scales complimentary to satellite, aircraft, and tower derived fluxes. Key system components are: a turbulent gust probe; a fast response water vapor sensor; an inertial navigation system (INS) coupled to global positioning system (GPS); and a 100 Hz data logging system. We present measurements made in the continental boundary layer at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Dryden Research Flight Facility located in the Mojave Desert. Two flights consisting of several horizontal straight flux run legs up to ten kilometers in length and between 330 and 930 m above ground level (m a.g.l.) are compared to measurement from a surface tower. Surface measured λE ranged from −53 W m−2 to 41 W m−2, and the application of a Butterworth High Pass Filter (HPF) to the datasets improved agreement to within ± 12 W m−2 for 86 % of flux runs, by removing improperly sampled low frequency flux contributions. This result, along with power and co-spectral comparisons and consideration of the differing spatial scales indicates the system is able to resolve vertical fluxes for the measurement conditions encountered. Challenges remain, and the outcome of these measurements will be used to inform future sampling strategies and further system development.

In this work, sensible heat flux estimated using a bulk transfer method was validated with a three-dimensional ultrasonic anemometer or surface layer scintillometer at various sites. Results indicate that it remains challenging to obtain temperature and wind speed at an appropriate reference height. To overcome this, alternative observations using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) were considered. UAV-based wind speed and sensible heat flux were indirectly estimated and atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) height was then derived using the sensible heat flux data. UAV-observed air temperature was measured by attaching a temperature sensor 40 cm above the rotary-wing of the UAV, and UAV-based wind speed was estimated using attitude data (pitch, roll, and yaw angles) recorded using the UAV’s inertial measurement unit. UAV-based wind speed was close to the automatic weather system-observed wind speed, within an error range of approximately 10%. UAV-based sensible heat flux estimated from the bulk transfer method corresponded with sensible heat flux determined using the eddy correlation method, within an error of approximately 20%. A linear relationship was observed between the normalized UAV-based sensible heat flux and radiosonde-based normalized ABL height.
