AbstractCircadian clocks are based on a molecular mechanism regulated at the transcriptional, translational and post-translational levels. Recent experimental data unravel a complex role of the phosphorylations in these clocks. In mammals, several kinases play differential roles in the regulation of circadian rhythmicity. A dysfunction in the phosphorylation of one clock protein could lead to sleep disorders such as the Familial Advanced Sleep Phase Disorder, FASPS. Moreover, several drugs are targeting kinases of the circadian clocks and can be used in cancer chronotherapy or to treat mood disorders. In Drosophila, recent experimental observations also revealed a complex role of the phosphorylations. Because of its high degree of homology with mammals, the Drosophila system is of particular interest. In the circadian clock of cyanobacteria, an atypical regulatory mechanism is based only on three clock proteins (KaiA, KaiB, KaiC) and ATP and is sufficient to produce robust temperature-compensated circadian oscillations of KaiC phosphorylation. This review will show how computational modeling has become a powerful and useful tool in investigating the regulatory mechanism of circadian clocks, but also how models can give rise to testable predictions or reveal unexpected results.

During text reading, the durations of eye fixations decrease with greater frequency and predictability of the currently fixated word (Rayner, 1998; 2009). However, it has not been tested whether those results also apply to scene viewing. We computed object frequency and predictability from both linguistic and visual scene analysis (LabelMe, Russell et al., 2008), and Latent Semantic Analysis (Landauer et al., 1998) was applied to estimate predictability. In a scene-viewing experiment, we found that, for small objects, linguistics-based frequency, but not scene-based frequency, had effects on first fixation duration, gaze duration, and total time. Both linguistic and scene-based predictability affected total time. Similar to reading, fixation duration decreased with higher frequency and predictability. For large objects, we found the direction of effects to be the inverse of those found in reading studies. These results suggest that the recognition of small objects in scene viewing shares some characteristics with the recognition of words in reading.

AbstractRecently, two attentional modes have been associated with specific eye movement patterns during scene processing. Ambient mode, characterized by short fixations and long saccades during early scene inspection, is associated with localization of objects. Focal mode, characterized by longer fixations, is associated with more detailed object feature processing during later inspection phase. The aim of the present study was to investigate the development of these attentional modes. More specifically, we examined whether indications of ambient and focal attention modes are similar in infants and adults. Therefore, we measured eye movements in 3- to 12-months-old infants while exploring visual scenes. Our results show that both adults and 12-month-olds had shorter fixation durations within the first 1.5 s of scene viewing compared with later time phases (>2.5 s); indicating that there was a transition from ambient to focal processing during image inspection. In younger infants, fixation durations between two viewing phases did not differ. Our results suggest that at the end of the first year of life, infants have developed an adult-like scene viewing behavior. The evidence for the existence of distinct attentional processing mechanisms during early infancy furthermore underlines the importance of the concept of the two modes.
