In order to improve the power factor and reduce the input current harmonics, power factor correction (PFC) converters are utilized. This paper introduces a single-stage continuous conduction mode (CCM) soft-switched power factor correction (PFC) converter with a tandem topology. The proposed topology has two operating modes, namely resonant operation mode and boost operation mode. Such a design and control realizes the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) and zero current switching (ZCS) of the power switches. The proposed topology has been introduced to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the input current further in the boost PFC converter under lower power and higher output voltage conditions. The simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the performance of the proposed design and its control.

Nowadays, the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is important in reliability for electric device. The UPS need high quality electricity. Therefore, the simulation of the three-level sine-wave inverter with power factor correction (PFC) is proposed in this paper. Moreover, the circuit’s guidelines of the active PFC controller in the active PFC and the sinusoidal output voltage are also presented. Validity of the proposed the three-level sine-wave inverter with the active PFC is confirmed by simulation. The simulation results show the very small current harmonics, the input power factor most nearly unity and constant output voltage when the suddenly step-load changed.

This paper studies the manner of energy consumption in Libyan street lighting systems and general road section. It also suggests proposal system with two cases of operation for an attempt to apply the energy saving program by adopting an optimum method in order to decrease the demand of energy in this section and to reduce the use of uneconomic equipment. The proposal system in this paper introduces the Light Emitting Diode (LED) street lighting technology to be used instead of traditional luminaries High Pressure Sodium (HPS). The proposed system is divided into two cases. The first case discusses the replacement of traditional luminaries (HPS) with energy saving luminaries (LED), while second case explains how integrating control node (dynamic dimmer) into LED in order to dim output lighting in streets will save more energy. This study reaches a result that a significant amount of energy of %47 (about 1092.23 GWh/year) of total energy consumed in street lighting sector could be saved if first case is applied. Moreover, it suggests that more energy of %58 (about 1380.02 GWh/year) of total energy consumed in the same sector cloud be saved if the second case is adopted.

Abstract The light-emitting diode (LED) is an essential component of intelligent street lighting (ISL) systems. An efficient ISL system can not only reduce power consumption by planning LED illuminating time but also reduce maintenance costs through a high degree of automation. In this paper, a buck-boost converter is used to realise composite transmission of power and signals for an ISL system. The power is modulated by the pulse width modulation (PWM) approach, and the switching ripple generated in the PWM process is utilised as the carrier of the signals transmitted between the remote-control centre and the slave nodes. Moreover, the proposed model involves a ‘request to send (RTS)/confirm to send (CTS)’ mechanism to avoid signal conflicts. Compared with the conventional power line communication (PLC) approach, the proposed transmission scheme has the advantages of simple circuit structure and simple system wiring. Additionally, a simulation model built in MATLAB/Simulink proves the designed transmission method has strong anti-noise ability.

Introduction: This Literature Review article is the result of a research on the current situation of smart public lighting systems with light-emitting diode (LED) technology in cities around the world. Problem: How convenient is it to use smart public lighting system with LED luminaires? Objective: To review the context of smart public lighting with LED technology. Methodology: Within this project, a lit review was conducted with more than 50 academic articles found in different databases such as: IEEE Xplore, Scopus, ScienceDirect etc. The selection criteria of the information followed the revision of articles from 2006 to 2018, and also, took into account their installation and performance in different cities and places of the world. Furthermore, articles on polluting and inefficient technologies were excluded. Conclusion: Considering the current context in which LED smart public lighting is, it is more likely to be implemented in the future. Results: Smart LED street lighting systems are more efficient in energy use, leads to savings in costs in medium terms, and finally, present a lower environmental impact compared to conventional lighting systems. Limitations: The review focuses on energy efficiency and economic aspects, not on social aspects. Originality: Smart LED public lighting systems have been researched within the economic and energy efficiency context.

Solar panels are an attractive and growing source of renewable energy in commercial and residential applications. Its use connected to the grid by means of a power converter results in a grid-connected photovoltaic system. In order to optimize this system, it is interesting to integrate several functionalities into the power converter, such as active power filtering and power factor correction. Nonlinear loads connected to the grid generate current harmonics, which deteriorates the mains power quality. Active power filters can compensate these current harmonics. A photovoltaic system with added harmonic compensation and power factor correction capabilities is proposed in this paper. A sliding mode controller is employed to control the power converter, implemented on the CompactRIO digital platform from National Instruments Corporation, allowing user friendly operation and easy tuning. The power system consists of two stages, a DC/DC boost converter and a single-phase inverter, and it is able to inject active power into the grid while compensating the current harmonics generated by nonlinear loads at the point of common coupling. The operation, design, simulation, and experimental results for the proposed system are discussed.

Power Factor Correction (PFC) has become one of the most active research areas in the field of power electronics due to the surplus power required for various industrial applications around the world. In this work, a novel SEPIC converter with the Tapped Inductor model operating in Discontinuous Conduction Mode (TI-SEPIC- DCM) is proposed for PFC. The proposed TI-SEPIC-DCM improves the voltage gain through voltage multiplier cell and charge pump circuit. The voltage multiplier cell also helps in attaining the Zero-Voltage Switching (ZVS) and Zero-Current Switching (ZCS), which results in higher switching frequency and size reduction. Moreover, a third order harmonic reduction control loop has been proposed for better harmonic mitigation. The proposed work has been simulated in MATLAB and the results are obtained to validate the significance of the proposed TI-SEPIC- DCM with near unity power factor and reduced harmonics.

This paper proposes the study and analysis of harmonics, energy consumption and power quality of light emitting diode (LED) lamps equipped in building lighting systems. LED lamps with external (LED MR16) and internal (LED light bulb) drivers are investigated using an experimental setup to compare the results. The power quality of both LED lamps is studied by using a power quality meter to measure the generated harmonic currents from various case studies. The case study is divided into four major cases: one LED lamp is turned on with one driver, two LED lamps are turned on using the two drivers, eight LED lamps are turned on with one driver, and eight LED lamps are turned on with the eight drivers. As harmonics are related to total power factor (PF), which affects the energy savings of the building, hence, a filtering circuit to reduce harmonic current has been designed and implemented to improve power quality and/or power factor of the system. The different cases of harmonic filter insertion at the input of an LED lamp’s driver are discussed and then compared with a lighting standard to show the effectiveness of the passive filtering technique used in the studied system. In addition, the obtained result can be applied to both newly built and retrofitted buildings that aim to use LED technology to increase energy efficiency and decrease energy costs, and could be a helpful guide for end-users and manufacturers in addressing and developing LED issues.
