This paper presents a high sensitivity liquid refractive index (RI) sensor based on lossy mode resonance (LMR) effect. The D-shaped fibers coated with nanosized titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin film as a sensing head were submerged into different refractive index solutions. The variations in the optical spectrum of the proposed RI sensor with different refractive index solutions were measured. The LMR resonance peaks were used to determine the wavelength shifts with different refractive index solutions. The results show that the optical spectrum peaks shifted towards the longer wavelength side with increasing the refractive index. For the proposed fiber sensing head with a polishing residual thickness of 72 μm, the maximum shift of the absorption peak was 264 nm. The sensitivity of the proposed RI sensor was 4122 nm/RIU for the refractive index range from 1.333 to 1.398.

We demonstrate high sensitivity fiber refractive index (RI) sensor based on asymmetric supermode interferences in tapered four core fiber (TFCF). To make TFCF-based RI sensors, the whitelight was launched into any one of the cores to define the excitation orientation and is called a vertex-core excitation scheme. When the four-core fiber (FCF) was gradually tapered, the four cores gathered closer and closer. Originally, the power coupling occurred between its two neighboring cores first and these three cores are grouped to produce supermodes. Subsequently, the fourth diagonal core enters the evanescent field overlapping region to excite asymmetric supermodes interferences. The output spectral responses of the two cores next to the excitation core are mutually in phase whereas the spectral responses of the diagonal core are in phase and out of phase to that of the excitation core at the shorter and longer wavelengths, respectively. Due to the lowest limitation of the available refractive index of liquids, the best sensitivity can be achieved when the tapered diameter is 10 μm and the best RI sensitivity S is 3249 nm/RIU over the indices ranging from 1.41–1.42. This is several times higher than that at other RI ranges due to the asymmetric supermodes.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin film on glass substrate is fabricated by sol-gel method. The TiO2 film is sintered at various temperatures for investigation on the refraction index and crystallization characteristic. The lower refractive index of the TiO2 thin film is 1.89 when the sintering is performed at the low temperature of 200°C and the thickness is 448 nm. However, the higher refractive index of 2.55 and chemical stability of the TiO2 film in rutile phase are obtained via sintering temperature at 700°C.
