New water soluble multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) containing silver nanoparticles-grafted-hyperbranched polyglycerols (HPG) nanocomposites were synthesized and characterized successfully. In this work, MWCNTs were opened using HNO3/H2SO4mixture and filled by metal nanoparticles such as silver nanoparticles through wet chemcial method. Then MWCNTs containing silver nanoparticles (MWCNTs(Ag)) were used as macroinitiator for ring opening polymerization of glycidol and MWCNTs(Ag)-g-HPG nanocomposites were obtained. Structure of nanocomposites was evaluated by TEM, TGA and spectroscopy methods. With the solubility of MWCNTs(Ag)-g-HPG greatly improved, the new nanocomposites exhibit potential application in biomedicine and nanomedicine.

Composite materials in electrodes for energy storage devices can combine different materials of high energy density, in terms of high specific surface area and pseudocapacitance, with materials of high power density, in terms of high electrical conductivity and features lowering the contact resistance between electrode and current collector. The present study investigates composite coatings as electrodes for supercapacitors with organic electrolyte 1.5 M TEABF4 in acetonitrile. The composite coatings contain high surface area activated carbon (AC) with only 0.15 wt% multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) which, dispersed to their percolation limit, offer high conductivity. The focus of the investigations is on the decoration of MWCNTs with silver nanoparticles, where smaller Ag crystallites of 16.7 nm grew on carboxylic group-functionalized MWCNTs, MWCNT–COOH, against 27–32 nm Ag crystallites grown on unfunctionalized MWCNTs. All Ag-decorated MWCNTs eliminate the contact resistance between the composite electrode and the current collector that exists when undecorated MWCNTs are used in the composite electrodes. Ag-decorated MWCNT–COOH tripled the power density and Ag-decorated MWCNT additive doubled the power density and increased the maximum energy density by 6%, due to pseudocapacitance of Ag, compared to composite electrodes with undecorated MWCNTs.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to characterise the electrical and mechanical properties of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-based isotropic conductive adhesives (ICAs). The paper also compares the electrical and mechanical performance of MWCNTs-based ICAs with silver flakes and silver nanoparticles-based ICAs. Design/methodology/approach The ICAs were formulated with dyglycidyl ether bisphenol A epoxy resin and conductive fillers such as silver flakes, silver nanoparticles and MWCNTs. The four-point probe is used to measure the bulk resistivity of the ICAs. Findings The results from the study showed that the percolation threshold of the MWCNTs-based ICAs is 1.5 Wt.%. At 3 Wt.%, the drop in bulk resistivity is lower than the conventional ICAs. The addition of silver nanoparticles increased the overall bulk resistivity of the system. The mechanical properties improved with the introduction of carbon nanotubes into the silver flakes–epoxy system. Practical implications The results from bulk resistivity and mechanical properties of the MWCNTs could help to formulate MWCNTs-based ICAs with optimum weight fraction. Originality/value The paper demonstrates that the addition of MWCNTs to the silver-based ICAs will enhance their mechanical and electrical conductivity. In addition, the optimum weight percentage is also determined, which shows a bulk resistivity value lower along with improved mechanical property with the conventional ICA system.

By exploiting the dispersibility and rigidity of boehmite nanofibers (BNFs) with a high aspect ratio of 4 nm in diameter and several micrometers in length, multiwall-carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were successfully dispersed in aqueous solutions. In these sols, the MWCNTs were dispersed at a ratio of about 5–8% relative to BNFs. Self-standing BNF–nanotube films were also obtained by filtering these dispersions and showing their functionality. These films can be expected to be applied to sensing materials.
