While extrusion molding with single-screw extruder, extrusion pressure comes into being from feeding section; it is one of the basic conditions to ensure that extrusion process can be carried on normally, in order to ensure molding process goes smoothly, it must meet the following requirement: extrusion pressure generated during the process must be sufficient. Therefore it has certain engineering significance to design structure of a single screw correctly that a mathematical model for formation of extrusion pressure during single-screw extrusion molding will have to be established. This paper conducted a research on theory of extrusion pressure when powder of pure UHMWPE resin is still in feeding section by molding in barrel of the single screw extruder specially designed for pure UHMWPE, and established a n-lamina model of powder materials or grain materials which is in feeding section and at the state of non-plug flow solid conveying, and it provided a method to calculate extrusion pressure of the n-lamina model, thus it enriched and perfected theory of single-screw extrusion molding.

A quasi-three-dimensional steady state finite-volume-based computer model for a power-law fluid is used to describe the three-dimensional transport during the processing of defatted soy flour with 25, 28 and 33 per cent moisture contents by weight in the metering section of a single-screw extruder. The numerical results have been compared with the earlier experimental results of Fong. The results are found to be reliable only for the highest moisture content dough (33 per cent by weight). The conclusion is that the quasi-three-dimensional model showing a viscous drag flow mechanism using a power-law equation for viscosity may be effectively used for predicting the behaviour of moist doughs during the extrusion process while the same model may not be very reliable for drier doughs which show plug flow behaviour during processing.

The mathematical model for the process of oily raw materials pressing with single-screw oil press has been developed, which makes it possible to calculate the main design parameters of an oil press for extracting oil from oil crop seeds. This model of pressing describes the process of moving meal in the pressure zone and expression of oil in the pressing cage of the screw press, taking into account the following assumptions: porous skeleton and oil have the same density, they have no chemical interaction, the process of oil filtration occurs under isothermal conditions with laminar conditions of motion. The developed mathematical model corresponds to physical meaning of the occurring phenomena and can be used to analyze the work of active presses, and at the design stage.

To make single-screw extruder with extrusion pressure enough, through theory of friction-induced extrusion pressure, which has been generally accepted in the industry. The barrel designed modular structure, in the before barrel carved groove, to add the friction coefficient between barrel and solid material. It form extrusion pressure In this section by exponential increase. This papers analyze that use of spiral groove instead of linear grooves can effectively reduce the frictional heat generation.

The oil extraction of Calophyllum seeds using a conventional single screw press leads to an inferior yield and is perceived to be less efficient as well as difficult to operate. An innovative and flexible single screw press was, therefore, designed and investigated in this study to solve these problems. Moreover, the effects of the seeds’ moisture content, pressing temperature and seeds’ feed rate on the oil yield and quality were identified to determine the optimal oil extraction performance from the Calophyllum seeds. The study found that the seeds’ moisture content, pressing temperature and seeds’ feed rate generally affected the oil yield. The yield indeed improved as the pressing temperature and the seeds’ feed rate increased respectively from 45 to 75°C and 1.5 to 5 kg·h–1. The oil yield also ameliorated as the seeds’ moisture content rose from 1.7 to 12.8%, but it was optimal when the seeds’ moisture content was 5.5%. The best oil yield of 80.6% was, thus, obtained with the seeds’ moisture content of 5.5%, a pressing temperature of 75°C and the seeds’ feed rate of 5 kg per h. Although the quality of the crude oil was poor with a high viscosity (³ 94 mm2·s–1) and high acid value (³ 48 mg KOH/g), its density, saponification and iodine values were acceptable. After the oil refining process by degumming and neutralisation, its quality improved and met the Indonesian Biofuel Standards, except for its viscosity.
