Key theories of international migrations: overview, critique and perspectivesThe article aims at critical review of the key theories of international migration. The starting point is the assumption that a critical review of theoretical literature is a necessary component of the research process, especially regarding such rapidly growing field as migration studies. The authors analyze the most important theories developed in migration studies (economic theories, structural-historical theories, migration networks and transnationalism) by pointing out their historical contexts, drawbacks and limitations. At the same time they indicate the new research perspectives, which include relations between migration theory and a broader social context as well as the dialectic of mobility and immobility. Autorzy analizują najważniejsze koncepcje wypracowane w ramach badań migracyjnych: teorie ekonomiczne, strukturalno-historyczne, sieci migracyjnych i transnacjonalizmu. Pokazują kontekst historyczny oraz wady i ograniczenia każdej z teorii wskazując nowe perspektywy badawcze: powiązania teorii migracji z szerszym kontekstem społecznym i dialektyką mobilności/braku mobilności.

This paper studies Tolkien’s interpretation of German heroism, taking as a starting point his essay-poem «The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm’s Son» on The Battle of Maldon. Through academic texts on Beowulf and Sigurd, as well as his own legendarium, his reading and contribution are explored, placing the latter in dialogue with the latest research, and detailing the lines and scope of his ideas. After locating the inflection point that Tolkien marked around the word ofermod(e), the historical, literary and religious components that base Tolkien’s interpretation will be explained, in line with the Anglo-Saxon poetic and heroic tradition. Through this, it will become clear that the humble heroism of the subordinate who faces the fatal fate to which his master has led him is rooted in clear examples of Old English literature, and that the darkness brought by the terrible enemy has a mythical dimension, which refers to the shadow and to hell. Finally, in light of the latest contributions, Tolkien’s interpretation will be reaffirmed and enriched, opening new research perspectives on his work

The first part of this article deals with a critical review of the notion of event. Instead of predefining social groups, the author uses events as entry points to the field. She shows how multiple belongings in the Lake Geneva region are celebrated during religious events: music is a central mode of expression of diversity in a translocal context.. The research process starts with a focus on events and the analysis of actors who put on stage their multiple belonging. These festive events are situated in a political, geographic and social context.

AbstractAfter giving an overview of the development of and recent trends in research on world travel literature of the 18th and 19th centuries, this article considers new research perspectives by linking world travel literature, the history of science, and the history of literary forms. While the latest research has drawn attention to the importance of studying the multiplicity of travels, contexts, practices, sources, logbooks, and travel reports, this essay identifies ‘comparison and comparing’ as a historical key concept in the making of world travels as a genre and a starting point for the formation of early global perceptions about science, nature, and cultural difference. After drawing on various travel authors like Georg Forster, George Vancouver, Alexander von Humboldt, and Adelbert von Chamisso, the article finally aims at identifying new research directions by reconstructing both groups of historical actors, the ‘natives’ and the sailing Europeans, as distant objects of ethnographic literary studies.

This book’s starting point is the notion of theorising and the fact that, because scholarship at the intersection of ethnicity, race and old age has stagnated, we are in dire need of inquiries that focus on the context of discovery. The author argues that our scholarly imagination about this intersection needs to be developed now that the globalisation of international migration and transnationalism have increased the ethno-cultural diversity of our ageing populations. Through a scoping review of the last twenty years of research and theunderstandings of ethnicity and race that informs it, the author shows that scholarship on ageing and old age do not resonate well with the latest advancements in ethnicity and race scholarship. The book introduces gerontologists to social scientific discussions about ethnicity and race, introduces international migration scholars to the implications that population ageing has for the life-course, gives both of these scholarly fields insight into what characterizes scholarship at the intersection of ethnicity/ race and old age, andproposes a new research agenda. By bringing attention to the topics that have received the most attention (i.e. health inequalities, health and social care, intergenerational relationships and caregiving), and the manner in which ethnicity/ race have been made sense of so far, the author identifies the obstacles that scholarship on ethnicity, race and old age faces, and proposes how we can address them in an ethnicity-astute and diversity-informed manner.

This state of the field essay examines recent trends in American Cultural History, focusing on music, race and ethnicity, material culture, and the body. Expanding on key themes in articles featured in the special issue of Cultural History, the essay draws linkages to other important literatures. The essay argues for more a more serious consideration of the products within popular culture, less as a reflection of social or economic trends, rather for their own historical significance. While the essay examines some classic texts, more emphasis is on work published within the last decade. Here, interdisciplinary methods are stressed, as are new research perspectives developing by non-western historians.

Abstract The studies about migrations become very important in recent times. Brazil is also in international migration circuits, like the frontier migrations with neighbour countries of Mercosul. This dynamic is studied through the concept of identity as a conflict or a play and its participation in the making of new territorialities, specially those of frontier networks. Keywords: Identity, Migration, Networks, Mercosul.

In the past decade cardiopulmonary nematodes affecting felids have become a core research topic in small animal parasitology. In the late 2000s, an increase in studies was followed by unexpected findings in the early 2010s, which have stimulated research teams to start investigating these intriguing parasites. Prolific scientific debate and exchanges have then fostered field and laboratory studies and epi-zootiological surveys. New data have improved basic and applied knowledge, solved dilemmas and posed new questions. This article discusses the past and present background to felid cardiopulmonary nematodes after the last few years of intense scientific research. New data which have demonstrated the key role of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus and Troglostrongylus brevior in causing respiratory infections in domestic cats, and on the nil to negligible current importance of other species, i.e., Troglostrongylus subcrenatus, Oslerus rostratus and Angiostrongylus chabaudi, are presented. Biological information and hypothesized alternative routes of infection are analysed and discussed. Novel identification and taxonomical data and issues are reported and commented upon. On the whole, recent biological, ecological and epi-zootiological information on felid meta-strongyloids is critically analysed, with the aim to answer outstanding questions, stimulate future studies, and underline new research perspectives.

Recently, cyber reasoning systems demonstrated near-human performance characteristics when they autonomously identified, proved, and mitigated vulnerabilities in software during a competitive event. New research seeks to augment human vulnerability research teams with cyber reasoning system teammates in collaborative work environments. However, the literature lacks a concrete understanding of vulnerability research workflows and practices, limiting designers’, engineers’, and researchers’ ability to successfully integrate these artificially intelligent entities into teams. This paper contributes a general workflow model of the vulnerability research process, and identifies specific collaboration challenges and opportunities anchored in this model. Contributions were derived from a qualitative field study of work habits, behaviors, and practices of human vulnerability research teams. These contributions will inform future work in the vulnerability research domain by establishing an empirically-driven workflow model that can be adapted to specific organizational and functional constraints placed on individual and teams.

In this paper I contrast ‘economic’ and ‘organizational’ approaches to corporate governance, in order to draw out some of their distinctive features and discuss their relative strengths and weaknesses. I identify some promising areas of new research that examine the role of social controls and trust for the way that companies are governed. Although these are fairly embryonic, I argue that they call into question the hegemony of economic theories in theorizing the governance of the corporation. I conclude by advocating a re-consideration and broadening of the current conceptual scope of corporate governance, so as to facilitate and encourage other potentially valuable ways of exploring and understanding how companies are governed.
