Lexis of the Polish-East Slavic Borderland as a Testimony to a Multilingual Past The importance of borderlands has been considered in many studies in various fields, both theoretical and empirical. In this study, the borderland is approached as a geographical term, an area in Poland which is located in close proximity to the eastern border. At the same time, this spatial understanding of the border area determines cultural, linguistic and ethnic borders, which are difficult to define precisely.This article deals with the issue of difficulties in unambiguously defining the origin of certain lexemes, a fact stemming from the complicated cultural, ethnic and linguistic past of the borderlands between the West and the East Slavic regions. This has been demonstrated drawing on the example of two words: czugun ‘cast iron’, ‘cast-iron pot’ and opołonik ‘large spoon, ladle’. On the one hand, they show the complexity of the multilingual past of the areas where they can be found; on the other hand, they are a testimony to old rural realities. Leksyka na pograniczu polsko-wschodniosłowiańskim jako świadectwo wielojęzycznej przeszłości W wielu publikacjach badaczy z różnych dziedzin rozpatrywano znaczenie pogranicza zarówno w studiach teoretycznych, jak i w pracach empirycznych. W tekście pogranicze jest traktowane jako określenie geograficzne, obszar na terenie Polski znajdujący się w bezpośredniej bliskości granicy państwowej na wschodzie. Jednocześnie to przestrzenne rozumienie pogranicza wyznacza trudne do precyzyjnego wytyczenia granice kultur, języków i etnosów.W artykule zajęto się problemem trudności w jednoznacznym rozstrzygnięciu pochodzenia wyrazu, które wynikają ze skomplikowanej, wspólnej przeszłości kulturowej, etnicznej oraz językowej ziem położonych na styku zachodniej i wschodniej Słowiańszczyzny. Wykazano to na przykładzie dwóch wyrazów – czugun ‘żeliwo’, ‘garnek żeliwny’ i opołonik ‘warząchew, łyżka wazowa’ – które z jednej strony pokazują uwikłanie wynikające z wielojęzycznej przeszłości terenów, gdzie występują, a z drugiej strony stanowią świadectwo dawnych realiów wiejskich.

The 19th century to the 20th century is a moment in which Muslims enter a new gate, the gate of renewal. This phase is often referred to as the century of modernism, a century where people are confronted with the fact that the West is far ahead of them. This situation made various responses emerging, various Islamic groups responded in different ways based on their Islamic nature. Some respond with accommodative stance and recognize that the people are indeed doomed and must follow the West in order to rise from the downturn. Others respond by rejecting anything coming from the West because they think it is outside of Islam. These circles believe Islam is the best and the people must return to the foundations of revelation, this circle is often called the revivalists. One of the figures who is an important figure in Islamic reform, Jamaluddin Al-Afghani, a reformer who has its own uniqueness, uniqueness, and mystery. Departing from the division of Islamic features above, Afghani occupies a unique position in responding to Western domination of Islam. On the one hand, Afghani is very moderate by accommodating ideas coming from the West, this is done to improve the decline of the ummah. On the other hand, however, Afghani appeared so loudly when it came to the question of nationality or on matters relating to Islam. As a result, Afghani traces his legs on two different sides, he is a modernist but also a fundamentalist.

Many important changes occurred in the Russian Federation's foreign policy since 2000s with Putin's coming to power. Although the foreign policy is defined as pragmatic during this period, it is in fact ideologically constructed on the basis of the concept of “sovereign democracy.” The concept constitutes in the same time the source of loyalty of the Russian reelpolitik towards the West, especially the USA and of the Russian anti-globalist policies. The aim of this chapter is to analyze the intellectual, normative, and conceptual dimensions of the “sovereign democracy” concept that could serve to conceive the foreign policy practice of the Russian Federation, on the one hand, and on the other hand its dialectical relationships with the West in the era of globalization.

This paper engages the perspectives of thirty young adult Asian American Buddhists (YAAABs) raised in non-Buddhist households. Grounded in semi-structured, one-on-one in-person and email interviews, my research reveals the family tensions and challenges of belonging faced by a group straddling multiple religious and cultural worlds. These young adults articulate their alienation from both predominantly white and predominantly Asian Buddhist communities in America. On the one hand, they express ambivalence over adopting the label of “convert” because of its Christian connotations as well as its associations with whiteness in the American Buddhist context. On the other hand, they lack the familiarity with Asian Buddhist cultures experienced by second- or multi-generation YAAABs who grew up in Buddhist families. In their nuanced responses to arguments that (1) American convert Buddhism is a non-Asian phenomenon, and (2) Asians in the West can only “revert” to Buddhism, these young adults assert the plurality and hybridity of their lived experiences as representative of all American Buddhists, rather than incidental characteristics of a fringe group within a white-dominated category.

This article examines the role, in patristic and medieval commentaries on Isaiah in the west up until 1150, of the theme of the ‘remnant’ (Isaiah i.9; x.22), which is related to Jewish Christians by St Paul. Assumed to signify the small number of Jewish converts in Apostolic times, it could also be used on the one hand to minimise the Jewish contribution to the early Church (St Jerome and Rupert of Deutz) and on the other hand to emphasise it (Haimo of Auxerre, Bruno of Segni and Herveus of Bourg-Dieu). Some authors, however, simply ignore the question (Arnold of Bonneval and Rainald of St Eloi).

This research is motivated by the imbalance of relations between East and West in Arabic travel literature. The inequality is caused by the representation of the superior (West) and the inferior (East) which is constantly being produced. The novel Uṣfur min al-Syarq by Taufiq al-Hakim as one of Arabic travel literature is considered to offer a different view from other Arabic travel literature by proposing the value of equality between East and West. This research is expected to be able to resolve the problem of inequality in relations between East and West as represented in Arabic travel literature. This research uses another representation strategy from Carl Thompson's travel literary concept which consists of colonial, neo-colonial, and post-colonial strategies. The results of this study found that the representations of the others made by al-Hakim which were dominated by the use of colonial and post-colonial strategies showed that the author occupied two opposing positions. On the one hand, al-Hakim is still trapped in colonial discourse and on the other hand, al-Hakim is not entirely successful in bringing the post-colonial travel agenda to escape from Western hegemony. The equality proposed by al-Hakim regarding the East is inseparable from Western assistance. To realize the equality of the East and the West, al-Hakim used the superiority of the West to face the West in order to defend the East.

Abstract Viele europäische Manager konzentrieren sich auf der Suche nach den neuesten Trends immer noch (zu häufig) auf den Westen. Ist das heute noch zeitgemäß – und vor allem – wird es den tatsächlichen Herausforderungen der Unternehmen und der Politik noch gerecht? Dieser Beitrag wurde angeregt durch zwei vom Deutschen Dialogmarketing Verband organisierten Reisen nach China, Japan und Südkorea, an denen der Autor in den letzten zwölf Monaten teilgenommen hat. In diesem ersten Beitrag leitet er einige zentrale Lektionen für das eigene Tun in Deutschland und Europa ab. Diese „Lektionen“ basieren zum einen auf dem Gesehenen und Gehörten vor Ort in China selbst. Dazu gehören auch weitere Gespräche mit China-Experten. Zum anderen erfolgte für diesen Beitrag ein intensives Studium der einschlägigen Veröffentlichungen zu den Entwicklungen in China, um so ein holistisches Bild von China und seinen Entwicklungen zu erhalten. Der Beitrag wird in der kommenden Ausgabe von „Der Betriebswirt“ abgeschlossen und behandelt die Themen „Alibaba – Integration über verschiedene Leistungsfelder hinweg“, „JD.com – Amazon und UPS in einem“, „Eigenständige Lösungen durch konsequente Marktabschottung“, „Eroberung des globalen Automobil-Marktes“ sowie „People-Power“. Many European managers are still (too often) concentrating on the West in their search for the latest trends. Is this still appropriate today – and above all – does it still meet the real challenges of companies and politics? This article was inspired by two trips to China, Japan and South Korea organized by the German Dialog Marketing Association, in which the author has participated in the last twelve months. In this first article he derives some central lessons for actions of companies in Germany and Europe. These „lessons“ are based on the one hand on what has been seen and heard locally in China itself. This includes further discussions with China experts. On the other hand, an intensive study of the relevant publications on developments in China was carried out in order to obtain a holistic picture of China and its developments. AbstractIn this study I reexamine some well-known generalizations about Islamic law prior to the impact of the West, e.g., the contention that Islamic law became increasingly closed, based more and more on blind imitation. My examination of the fatwā collection of the seventeenth-century Palestinian Muftī Khayr al-Dīn al-Ramlī suggests that increasing closure never took place. On the one hand al-Ramlī faithfully continues the tradition of his classical predecessors, or, in other words, he practices taqlīd by obligating himself to earlier authorities. On the other hand, his fatwās convey a sense of openness, flexibility, and liveliness. These characteristics are concretized in some of the major terms that he uses: ijtihād, or free discretion of the jurist in areas of the law that remained open; iṣtiḥsān, or relaxation of formal rules; and ʿurf, or local customary law, which, by definition, is changeable over time. In my view, the flexibility of Islamic law has been underemphasized in the scholarly literature, and hence it is on this factor in particular that I have chosen to concentrate.

AbstractIn the coming months and years, the left faces a historic juncture. On the one hand, racist violence is on the rise across the West, and the political class seems intent on mobilising both overt and subtle racism. On the other hand, strategies of anti-racist organising, which have developed on both sides of the Atlantic, have reached a theoretical impasse. I argue that now, more than ever, a serious project of historical and intellectual retrieval is necessary. This article interrogates the theoretical limitations of ‘anti-blackness’ as an analysis of racialised oppression. Through the thought of Frantz Fanon and Steve Biko, among others, I argue that theories of ‘anti-blackness’, specifically those rooted in Afro-pessimism, are predicated on a theoretical shift away from relational social theory to identitarian essentialism which obscures, rather than illuminates, the processes of racialisation which undergird racial oppression.

Abstract A widely shared but understudied characteristic of the rise of right-wing conservative populism (the New Right) is the emphasis on religious-cultural identity of the West. Using phrases like ‘Judeo-Christianity’, ‘Christian values’, or ‘Christian Leitkultur’ a variety of political actors have claimed that religious-cultural identity needs to be safeguarded and enshrined in policy. As this frame is gaining traction, the question arises what this emphasis on the public importance of religion entails for those who tend to see themselves as the guardians of religious-cultural identity. In particular this article focusses on the challenges this development creates for Christian Democratic political actors. On the one hand the emphasis on the importance of ‘christian traditions’ resonates with the historical position of christian democrats, on the other hand, there are important differences between traditional christian democracy and how the New Right speaks of religion. The main aim of this article is to outline how the rise of the New Right has created a contestation about what it means to represent christian cultural identity.

The theory of orientalism by E. Said allows for a different reading of I.A. Goncharov’s «Frigate «Pallada». On the one hand, the author considers the West as a traditional dominant culture that is expanding to the East, but, on the other hand, he tries to understand the Eastern countries in their historical development and gives them a more objective assessment than Western writers usually do.
