The Use of the Lexical Exponents of Hypothetical Modality in Polish and LithuanianIn this article the author focuses on the issue of hypothetical modality[1] in Polish and Lithuanian. A list of the basic exponents of hypothetical modality in both languages is presented. However, the focus is mainly placed on the lexical exponents. On the basis of one of the six groups, which describes a high degree of probability (H5), the differences between the use of the lexical exponents in both languages are examined. In the study, multilingual corpora resources, including The Polish-Lithuanian parallel corpus Clarin-PL., are utilized.[1] [In the academic literature, for the notion described herein, the term of epistemic modality is also used.  Nevertheless, in this paper I will continue to use the term of hypotheticality, which I borrowed from the studies on modality, conducted in Polish-Bulgarian cooperation (Slavic Institute of Polish Academy of Sciences and Institute for Bulgarian Language of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences).] O użyciu wykładników leksykalnych modalności hipotetycznej w językach polskim i litewskimW artykule autorka porusza zagadnienie modalności hipotetycznej[1]  w językach polskim i litewskim. Przedstawia wykaz podstawowych wykładników modalności hipotetycznej w obu językach. Główną uwagę skupia jednak na wykładnikach leksykalnych. Na przykładzie jednej z sześciu grup, opisującej wysoki stopień prawdopodobieństwa (H5), omawia różnice użycia wykładników leksykalnych w obu językach. W badaniach wykorzystuje wielojęzyczne zasoby korpusowe, w tym Polsko-litewski korpus równoległy Clarin-PL.[1] [W literaturze przedmiotu na oznaczenie opisywanych tu treści stosowany jest również termin epistemiczności. Niemniej jednak w tej pracy autorka pozostaje przy terminie hipotetyczności, który zapożycza z badań nad modalnością, prowadzonych we współpracy polsko-bułgarskiej (Instytut Slawistyki PAN i Instytut Języka Bułgarskiego BAN).]

Applications of the experimental Polish-Lithuanian corpus /EkorpPL-LT/ in research on the contemporary Polish language and in theoretical Polish-Lithuanian contrastive studiesThe experimental Polish-Lithuanian corpus is an extended tool put into effect at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, first of all with a view to contrastive studies and the structure of the planned Polish-Lithuanian electronic dictionary. The potential recipients of EKorpPL-LT (obviously apart from linguists) can comprise computer specialists (dealing with computer processing of a language), literary scholars, library science specialists, pedagogues, educationalists, teachers, translators, students. Bi- and multilingual corpora are irreplaceable and indispensable in the process of studying a foreign language.In the article, basing on the examples of several problems, possible ways to apply EKorpPL-LT have been presented. During the experiments carried out it turned out that the parallel corpus is not only an excellent tool for comparison and contrast, but also an instrument allowing to look at every language from a different perspective. Without the perspective it would not be possible to say much about Polish and Lithuanian indicative pronouns, indefinite determiners, dual forms or the vocative case. If it were not for the information based on corpora resources, nobody would be aware that the language of Polish instructions of convenience appliances is not only a commercial effect, but above all an element of the state’s concern for the Polish language.

Web presentation of bilingual corpora (Slovak-Bulgarian and Bulgarian-Polish)In this paper we focus on the web-presentation of bilingual corpora in three Slavic languages and their possible applications. Slovak-Bulgarian and Bulgarian-Polish corpora are collected and developed as results of the collaboration in the frameworks of two joint research projects between Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, from one side, and from the other side: Ľ. Štúr Institute of Linguistics, Slovak Academy of Sciences and Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences, coordinate by authors of this paper.

Until 1965 the requirements and conditions of habilitation proceedings in Poland were governed by the law on schools of higher education. The solutions adopted under that law showed a relatively high degree of stability. In the fi rst years after WWII the habilitation qualifi cation was based on the solutions governing in Poland in the 1930s, with only slight changes introduced in the fi rst month after the end of the war. The fi rst reform of higher education of 1947 left the right to confer habilitation degrees with schools of higher education then in existence and retained the existing order of the habilitation proceedings. However, it implemented a number of rather signifi cant amendments in the area of the requirements needed to be fulfi lled at each stage of these proceedings. The right to lecture remained inherent to the habilitation qualifi cation and degree. What changed was the scope of infl uence of the minister of education supervising schools of higher education regarding habilitation proceedings and the appointment of the Main Council of Higher Education with the right of fi nal say and consent to the opening of the habilitation qualifi cation and to run the habilitation proceedings. Habilitation was abandoned by the reform of 1951 and replaced, following the Soviet model, with a higher degree of a doctor of science. Further changes followed in 1958 when it was restored by relevant provisions of the Act on higher education. It was then that more than forty years after Poland regained independence, the habilitation degree was for the fi rst time tied to a successful completion of the habilitation proceedings and earning the degree of a ‘docent’. The Main Council of Higher Education continued to function but its role in habilitation proceedings was reduced to issuing opinions before the minister of higher education decided on habilitation matters. Apart from schools of higher education, the right to confer habilitation degrees was granted to the Polish Academy of Sciences and academic institutions operating outside schools of higher education.

Digital Corpora and their Applications in Semantic Studies and LexicographyThe paper describes the first Bulgarian-Polish digital resources — parallel and comparable corpora, and their applications in the semantic studies and lexicography for creation of Bulgarian-Polish digital dictionary, a significant part of these bilingual resources. Some examples show how valuable the links between the bilingual aligned corpus and the digital dictionary are. The first Bulgarian-Polish digital resources are the main result of collaborative work between the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IMI-BAS) and the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences (ISS-PAS), established for the first time in 2006.
