The Polish speech of several villages in the neighborhood of Doсishki compared with the north-eastern peripheral dialectThe scientific studies on the Polish language on the territory of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania have focused mainly on specific regions and historical periods. Despite the large number of the recorded materials and their analyses, scientists were unable to establish joint research programs and perform regular investigations; they also failed to create a map of different settlements, so as to develop a holistic picture of the languages of the region. Today, it is difficult to compare the study results of dialectologists and other scholars, because there is no comprehensive analysis of the peripheral Polish dialects.The paper compares the features of the Polish dialect from the area of Docishki with Polish ethnic dialects, as well as with other eastern peripheral dialects. Some other phonetic and morphological features are characterized by the resulting substrate and linguistic contacts. The differences in the Polish dialect of Voronovo district in Belarus are also presented.The analysis of the material has yielded that the Polish speech in the neighbourhood of Doсishki is closely related to the north-eastern peripheral dialects, known as polszczyzna kresowa ‘borderland Polish’. It is mostly characterized by the same features as the Polish language of the area around Vilnius (including a part of the present-day Belarus). However, certain features of the local Polish dialect in villages near Doсishki are not attested in the neighbouring towns, but they are present in a few remote areas, such as the Kaunas region and only a complete description of a dialect will enable linguists to detect such features.

The purpose of this paper is to attempt to explain the activities of the Communist Party of Western Belarus in Vilnius during the fi rst half of the thirties of the twentieth century. The author’s aim is to show the organisation, theory and practice of this illegal party. Further-more, the intention is to present the activities of Vilnius police towards communist sym-pathizers and activists. Founded in 1923 in Vilnius, the Communist Party of Western Belaruswas a branch of The Communist Party of Poland. This organization like the polish communist party was illegal. Its aim was to combat the Polish state and to perform electioneering for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Although the name of the party could indicate a desire for independence of Belarus, in practice it was for the removal of the north eastern provinces of the Second Republic of Poland to the USSR. CPWB activity had a special dimension in Vilnius. As the region’s largest city and former capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Vilnus was home for many nations, religions and cultures. Moreover, Vil-nius was the most important fi eld for communist action. Given the number of inhabitants, industrialized multi-ethnic character, communists had the opportunity to develop wide subversive and conspiratorial work. In addition, the city was the great centre of production and distribution of communist publications, which allowed the spread of propaganda in both its administrative boundaries and in the Vilnius Voivodeship.

This article presents various layers of vocabulary constituting lexis of the Tatar tefsir, i.e. the translation of the Quran to the Polish language of the northern borderland, performed in the 16th century by Tatars of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Most emphasis was put on the northern borderland, separated on the basis of criteria adopted in the literature of the subject. Selected vocabulary was arranged alphabetically. A context was given in which it occurs and a semantic characteristic was provided on the basis of lexicographic sources – Polish and the East Slavic Languages. It was found that Tatar tefsir contains words previously not described or present in other historic assets of north-eastern borderland. This is particularly true with respect to forms borrowed from the East Slavic Languages, including hybrid forms. What is more, it is characterised by the existence of Old Polish lexis, including names of people performing activities which were not recorded in dictionaries, and other, words used infrequently and in specific text types. Tatar tefsir is also a perfect source for historical studies of Slavic-Oriental relations.

Languages in Contact and Conflict on the Territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL)Professor Uriel Weinreich, born and raised in Wilno / Vilnius, in his famous work Languages in contact (1953/1970), apart from some remarks concerning Slavic influences on the North-East variety of Yiddish, in fact does not mention the linguistic contacts on the territory of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania. He does, however, rightly observe that a particular brand of language loyalty can be made subservient to aggressive purposes and lead to conflict – not just language conflict at that. As an example of this, Weinreich quotes a ban on the use of the words pan ‘mister, sir’ and Żyd ‘Jew’, introduced by the Soviet authorities in Polish-language press after 1939. Outside-forces-inspired conflict of the 19th and 20th century notwithstanding, the former GDL has always been a territory of language contact, and its inhabitants have for centuries formed a multilingual community, akin to the Balkan Language League.The article deals with: (1) questions of terminology; (2) the ethnolinguistic situation on the territory of the GDL; (3) the functional distribution of the languages and dialects used therein; (4) examples of inter-lingual transpositions; and (5) the linguistic community of the GDL.

The catechism of M. Petkevičius (1598) is the first book in Lithuanian language by Reformers in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the second book in Lithuanian language in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the first hymnal in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, however, there are only few studies of it. In this article verbal nouns abstracts, derivatives with suffix -imas / -ymas from verbs, are analysed. The aim is to determinate whether such abstract making type in the sixteenth century was most numerous, as is it today, and is some rare type of making such derivative abstracts recorded in the catechism of M. Petkevičius. Also, it was fond what Polish words were translated to Lithuanian language as verbal nouns abstracts. In order to achieve the aim, from the catechism of M. Petkevičius were elected all such abstracts: 220 different abstracts with suffix -imas / -ymas, that was used a total of 780 times. In conclusion it can be said that already in the catechism of M. Petkevičius derivatives from verbs with the suffix -imas / -ymas significantly prevails, although there are recorded a different pattern of verbal abstract derivatives (eg. mėgumas). Moreover, at the end of a sixteenth century the formation of verbal abstracts with suffix -imas / -ymas was established and little different from the formation of such abstracts in the current Lithuanian language. Also, there is some correlation between most numerous verbal noun formation type (-imas / -ymas derivatives) in the Lithuanian language and most numerous verbal noun formation type (-anie, -enie, -cie derivatives) in the Polish language: all Polish nomina actionis with suffixes -anie, -enie, -cie were translated to the Lithuanian language as verbal abstracts with suffix -imas / -ymas.

The Pados-Tundra massif is located in the western Kola Peninsula and included in the Notozero ultrabasic rock complex (Vinogradov, 1971). The intrusion occurs as a body of ca. 13 km2 stretched out to the north-east. Enclosing rocks are Archaean granite- and granodiorite-gneisses. There are three major areas in the massif structure (Mamontov, Dokuchaeva, 2005): endocontact area, rhythmically layered series, and upper area. The endocontact area with thickness of 10-20 m occurs as schistose amphibole rocks formed during the metamorphism of main rocks. The rhythmically layered series occurs as a number of rocks from dunites to orthopyroxenites and composes most of the massif. There are 7 rhythms in total, each of which starts with dunites and ends with orthopyroxenites. Dykes of mezo- and leucocratic gabbro, diorites, and hornblendites are developed in the series rocks. The upper gabbronorite area can be partially observed in the north-eastern massif. Presumably, its major volume has been overlapped by enclosing rocks as a result of the overthrust. In the massif, there are 4 horizons of disseminated stratiform chromite ores, which are confined to dunites and serpentinites, as well as to a number of lens- and column-like bodies (podiform type) of chromite ores (Mamontov, Dokuchaeva, 2005; Barkov et al., 2017). Previous isotope-geochronological studies have determined the massif rock age of 2.15 Ga (Shapkin et al., 2008). However, further geological field observations and analysis of the obtained data assume that the intrusive is much older.

New Sm-Nd geochronological data indicate that the massif rocks and its rhythmically layered series are of Paleoproterozoic age, which is similar to the age of the Cu-Ni-Co-Cr-PGE ore-magmatic system of the Fennoscandian Shield (Amelin et al., 1995; Bayanova et al., 2014, 2017, 2019; Hanski et al., 2001; Huhma et al., 1990, 1996; Layered intrusions ...; 2004; Maier, Hanski, 2017; Mitrofanov et al., 2019; Peltonen, Brugmann, 2006; Puchtel et al., 2001; Serov, 2008; Serov et al., 2014; Sharkov, 2006; Sharkov, Smolkin, 1997). Complex Sm-Nd and U-Pb isotope-geochronological studies have allowed determining the major formation and alteration stages of the Pados-Tundra complex rocks:

– formation of the rhythmically layered series rocks of the intrusive 2485±77 Ma, harzburgites of the layered series – 2475±38 Ma;

– metamorphism of the massif rocks at the turn of 1.95 - 1.9 Ga;

– postmetamorphic cooling of the complex rocks tо 650°-600°С at the turn of 1872±76 Ma (Sm-Nd for metamorphic minerals) and then to 450°-400°С (U-Pb for rutile, 1804±10 Ma).

Therefore, the study results expand geography the East-Scandinavian large Palaeoproterozoic igneous province and are prospective for further study of analogous ultramafite-mafite complexes.

All investigations and were supported by the RFBR 18-05-70082, 18-35-00246, Presidium RAS Program #48 and are in frame of the Theme of Scientific Research 0226-2019-0053.

Co-existence of languages in the area of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the light of the works of Jan KarłowiczThe article discusses the issues of the co-existence of languages in the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the consequences of the phenomenon as documented in the works of Jan Karłowicz – the outstanding scholar of the second half of the nineteenth century, an expert and researcher of the “Lithuanian” version of Polish language. The article emphasizes the fact that the research on languages in the area of The Grand Duchy of Lithuania and results of their co-existence goes back to the second half of the nineteenth century and Jan Karłowicz was the pioneer of this research. He was the first to observe the following phenomena of their co-existence: interference; bilingualism and multilingualism; prioritization of co-existing languages with the unique role of the Polish language in focusing various functions in the history of The Grand Duchy of Lithuania; the diversity of Polish with sociolinguistic classification of its provincialisms and their division in the view of their origin; and the dangers to the Polish language in the period of Russification. Karłowicz struggled with the lack of terminology to describe the linguistic phenomena characteristic for the area. The article focuses on the classification of provincial qualities of the “Lithuanian” Polish language executed by Karłowicz in the social and ethnolinguistic area; and on the presentation of the phenomenon of linguistic interference visible in the provincial vocabulary in The Grand Duchy of Lithuania collected in “Dictionary of Polish dialects” by Karłowicz.

What is ”A Dictionary of oral Polish language of the north-eastern borderland” and what does it include?A regional variety of the Polish language of the north-eastern borderland in both oral and written forms has been functioning in Belarus, Lithuania and Latvia (former Polish Livonia) for several centuries. In 2000, The Team for Research on the Polish Language of the North-Eastern Borderland of the Institute of Slavic Studies of PAS came up with an idea of creating A Dictionary of oral Polish language of the north-eastern borderland. First, publications containing patterns of the Polish language, credibly recorded, were collected. There were more and more new studies, and the material was enriched with many new lexemes as well as their new variants or better exemplifications. Therefore, the lexical collection continued and was completed in 2012. At the same time the team researchers carried out excerpting from earlier texts, choosing examples, searching for parallel forms of lexemes, blending the material in dictionary units, i.e. establishing the form of a dictionary entry. In this way the corpus of the dictionary was written, following a formula created by the team.The article presents methodology of creating the Dictionary, its material basis, short description of lexical items included and the content of an entry. Równolegle z uzupełnieniami pochodzącymi z nowo pojawiających się prac prowadzono ekscerpcję z tekstów wcześniejszych, dobór przykładów, wyszukiwanie paralelnych postaci leksemów i scalanie materiałów w jednostki słownikowe, czyli ustalanie postaci hasła. W ten sposób powstał korpus Słownika, który opracowywano według ułożonej przez zespół formuły. Artykuł przedstawia metodologię tworzenia Słownika, jego podstawę materiałową, krótką charakterystykę leksyki, którą zawiera oraz zawartość artykułu hasłowego.

BISHOPS AND SECULAR RULERS OF RUTHENIA UNDER THE POLITICAL INFLUENCE OF MOSCOW DURING THE TIME OF METROPOLITAN CYPRIAN The subject of this dissertation is the broadly understood church policy in North- -Eastern Ruthenia at the turn of the 15th century. At that time, the political situation in this region was dominated by the rivalry between Moscow and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as well as other local political entities involved that wanted to retain their independence. Political disagreements that emerged in Ruthenia at the end of the 14th century were not limited to military conflicts. Since Metropolitan Alexius associated himself with Moscow, it became apparent that ecclesiastical influence began to play a very important role as well. Alexius used his power and ecclesiastical authority to tame the political ambitions of the rulers of Tver and Suzdal. Soon, he was using the same weapon in the conflict between Moscow and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

The article analyzes the factors that determined the formal status and the actual "power" of monasteries in Medieval Russia. It is noted that, basically, the set of factors was the same for different monasteries. It included the status and wealth of inhabitants and supporters, prominent religious personalities among former inhabitants, the monastery's history, and shrines in possession. The only thing that was different is the degree of impact of the factors. For example, the dominant status of the Nativity of the Virgin Monastery in Vladimir, being ranked first in the formal "hierarchy" of Russian monasteries (the second after 1561), was determined by two factors. The first one is the age of the monastery. Placed in the medieval capital of the North-Eastern Rus' and the Grand Duchy of Vladimir, it was founded much earlier than other essential Russian monasteries that existed in the 16th century: Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, Novospassky Monastery, Chudov Monastery, Simonov Monastery, Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, Pafnutiev Borovsky Monastery, and Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery. The second factor was the emphasis that the church and political authorities laid upon the personality of Alexander Nevsky who essentially established the dynasty of the Moscow princes. It was done specifically to enhance the dynasty's prestige. And, since the veneration of Prince Alexander was not yet widespread in the 16th century, the Nativity of the Virgin Monastery in Vladimir holding his ossuary dominated at the time. Thus, the monastery was under close attention from the Moscow church and authorities.
