Lithuanian linguistic territory in the Polish state between 1927–1933Olgierd Chomiński (1884–1943), professor of Stephan Batory’s University in Vilnius, investigated and described in detail the territory and the boundaries of Lithuanian language in Poland, and presented them in the form of a map published in 1939. Full list of localities and the number of persons speaking Lithuanian (as well as Polish, Belorussian, Russian Old Believers and Yiddish in mutual relations) were arranged and discussed successively: uniform areas (Święciany 50 000, Orany 24 000, Puńsk–Sejny 8 200) mixed areas (Ejszyszki, Soleczniki, Werenów, Raduń 9 500), and linguistic islands (Opsa 2 200, Gierwiaty 4 000, Dziewieniszki 4 200, Łazduny 2 500, Wilno–Troki 900 and several dozen people in Zdzięcioł), altogether about 106 000 persons, who could speak or understand Lithuanian language. After the author’s death the materials have been supplemented by Professor Jan Safarewicz, but the whole has been prepared for publication by Leszek Bednarczuk.  Литовский языковой ареал в Польском государстве 1927–1933В северо-восточных районах Польши в междувоенный период проживало литовское меньшинство, главным образом на этнических литовских землях. С течением времени обнаружилась тенденция к сокращению этого ареала. Pacceлeние и кoличecтвo литовского нacceлeния нa мecтах иccлeдовaл пoльcкий yчeный O. Хоминьски. Автор публикуемых материалов, Ольгерд Хоминьски, был профессором в Университете им. Стефана Батория в Вильнюсе. Умер в 1943 году, не окончив начатого труда. До начала II мировой войны (в 1939 году) была издана лишь карта литовского языкового ареала в Польше и подготовлена к печати лишь глава, описываюшая свенцянскинй район. Остальной материал остался необработанным. К изданию данный материал подготовил профессор Л. Беднарчук. Нecкoлькo нeбoльших глaв oбрaбoтал в началe 50-их гoдов XX вeка проф. Ян Caфаpeвич.

Idiomatic expressions in Florian Czarnyszewicz’s novels as a linguistic evidence of mutual relations of the Polish community by the Berezina river at the beginning of the 20th centuryThis article is an attempt at analysing collocations chosen from Florian Czarnyszewicz’s novels Nadberezyńcy and Wicik Żywica on the basis of their semantic classification. The subject of the analysis were collocations expressing mutual interpersonal relations: love, relations with family members or neighbours, fighting with somebody / showing hostility, punishment / revenge, killing / dying. The majority of the analysed idioms are used to express emotions, among which negative emotions prevail. The analysed units can be divided in the following way:typical of spoken Polishhaving full semantic, lexical and grammatical equivalents in Belorussianhaving full semantic, lexical and grammatical equivalents in Russianhaving full semantic, lexical and grammatical equivalents in Belorussian and Russian.This division results from the historical and linguistic conditions – the Poles inhabiting ethnic Belarus lived in a multinational environment. Traditional Polish communities were located near Belorussian and Russian (Old-Believers’) villages. The genetic proximity of the Polish, Belorussian (including dialects) and Russian languages gave rise to numerous language interferences. The evidence of this is the vocabulary used in Czarnyszewicz’s novels, especially idioms.

In the domestic literature, the beginnings of comparative ideas about supernatural belong to the writing of Kievan Rus. The most meaningful such representation is presented by "The Word of St. Gregory, reproduced in the interpretation of how the first pagans, that is, the pagans, worshiped the idols and laid them down, as they now do." The basis of this monument of the Kyivan culture of the 12th century, also known as the "Word of the Idols," was the sermon of the prominent patriarch Gregory the Theologian on the Epiphany, in which he reacted negatively to ancient paganism. But "The Word," as Y. Anichkov noted, is not a preaching, nor a translation of the thoughts of Gregory the Theologian, but an attempt to study Old Believers: it gives an interpretation of the work of the Byzantine theologian "in the interpretation" of the local paganism.

The Swiss geologist and mineralogist Louis-Albert Necker belonged to a family rich in scientific celebrities. Though a professor at the Académie de Genève for 25 years and author of numerous publications, he is mainly remembered today for his description of the “Necker cube” optical illusion and for leaving Geneva to spend the last 20 years of his life in Portree on the Isle of Skye. As a first step towards assessing Necker's contribution to science, a full list of his publications is presented, with comments about their citation in previous bibliographies and about published translations and abridgements. Information about the surviving specimens from his scientific collections, most of which are in the Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Genève, is also presented.

With reference to Yu. F. Samarin’s thesis on “Formalism” of the Church Life in the Pre-Petrine Period, the article examines the issue of the role of fasts, eating patterns and daily routine in general among most radical groups of Old Believers. The author of the article draws the conclusion that such conceptions were rooted in the Pre-Nikon Russian religious (monkish) traditions. The author pays special attention to the social and political aspect of the connection between food and payer for the Tsar in the context of the “spiritual Antichrist” teaching.
