Tradition and the practices of gender domination on the example of hutsul carollingThe Christmas custom of carolling occupies a very special place in the life of Hutsulshchyna inhabitants. Referred to as a religious rite, for a long time Hutsul carolling has been an object of numerous studies that shape ideas about it. In spite of the functioning of many forms of carolling in these areas, both researchers and the inhabitants of the Ukrainian Carpathians recognize as the most important the male form of carolling, which marginalized the role of women. However, on closer inspection it turns out that women also have an exceptional impact on the course of tradition, often taking the initiative in carolling. The article focuses on the, hitherto disregarded in the literature gender, relations within the Hutsul carolling. It also analyses the connection between discourse and social practices manifested in male and female forms of carolling. A look at the official and non-official character of tradition as well as relations between genders and any crises connected with them highlights the domination and symbolic power within the gender domain. Tradycja a praktyki dominacji w obrębie płci na przykładzie huculskiego kolędowaniaBożonarodzeniowy zwyczaj kolędowania zajmuje szczególne miejsce w życiu mieszkańców Huculszczyzny. Określane jako rytuał religijny huculskie kolędowanie od dawna stanowi obiekt wielu prac naukowych, które kształtują wyobrażenia na jego temat. Na tych terenach funkcjonuje wiele form kolędowania. Za najistotniejsze, zarówno badacze, jak i mieszkańcy Karpat ukraińskich, uznają kolędowanie mężczyzn, w którym marginalizowana jest rola kobiet. Przy bliższym przyjrzeniu okazuje się jednak, że również i one mają szczególny wpływ na przebieg tradycji, niejednokrotnie przejmując kolędniczą inicjatywę. Artykuł skupia się na nieuwzględnianych dotąd w literaturze przedmiotu relacjach płci w obrębie huculskiego kolędowania. Analizuje również związek dyskursu i praktyk społecznych przejawiających się w kolędzie kobiecej i męskiej. Przyjrzenie się kwestiom oficjalności i nieoficjalności oraz relacjom między płcią a wszelkiego rodzaju kryzysami pozwala zwrócić uwagę na uwidaczniającą się dominację oraz przemoc symboliczną w obrębie płci.

For a long time, the role of women was restricted and even prohibited from being involved in church ministry. Even more specifically, there are still views that prohibit or reject the role of women as pastors in the church. Some have used the text of 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 and 1 Timothy 2:9-15 as a biblical foundation to strengthening this views. However, the I see that these two texts can’t be used as a biblical foundation to prohibiting or rejecting the role of women as pastors in the church. Therefore, I will reinterpret these two texts by paying attention to the context of the text and its literary elements. This is necessary to find the true meaning what Paul told in both of texts. Based on this interpretation, it will found that Paul did not prohibit the involvement of women in church in every place and time. Paul's words in the text were responded to the problems faced by the church in each text and cannot be applied absolutely in every place and time

This paper lies at the intersection of the considerable scholarly literatures on household livelihood strategies and on the role of women in Southeast Asia. Focused ethnographically on rural Philippine households engaged primarily in various combinations of fishing and farming activities, and analytically on how gender relations figure in the decisions that the co-heads of these households make regarding their economic plans for the future, it considers how the livelihood diversification that characteristically accompanies rural development affects – and is in turn affected by – the conjugal relationship.

The following is an investigation of the nature of women in the Homeric poems. It is generally accepted that epic figures are typical rather than individual, idiosyncratic personalities. So it is reasonable to assume that the women of the two poems represent the general conception of female behaviour held by Homer's audience. Even if the poems represent a tradition which was a long time in the making, it remains true that what appears within the poems must have made sense somehow to Homer's contemporary audience. And that is the sense we must seek.There has been very little said about the role of women in the Homeric epics. Discussion is bound to be uneven; women are glimpsed infrequently in the Iliad, whereas they are everywhere in the Odyssey. But this in itself perhaps offers insights into the nature of the difference between the two poems. In addition an analysis of the part women play in these poems helps to explain the continual appeal of the Iliad and the Odyssey. For the poems, like all truly great pieces of literature, say things that we humans need and want to hear. As is true of other facets of the poems the female characters are extraordinarily authentic. They manifest moods and psychological states which are true to women, at least in the Western world. Moreover the poems, especially the Odyssey, show with great profundity some important truths of male-female relationships. Whether these are inherent and never-changing or it is because women's situation has not much changed through the millenia is hard to say.

The article analyzes the way the female characters appear in the book A Filosofia na alcova of Marquis de Sade. It highlights the author’s recurrent themes, such as space, private life and freedom, relating them to the discussion about the role of women during the eighteenth century in France. Such a thematic-spatial option analyzes, therefore, points that were not thoroughly studied and that, for a long time, were only considered in addendums within the studies about the French post-revolutionary context. The discussion is part of the theoretical intersection between History and Literature, using as reference the works of Georges Bataille, Michele Perrot, Eliane Robert Moraes and Lynn Hunt.

Abstract Diotima, the priestess of Plato’s Symposium, is an important reference for Proclus’ thinking about the role of women in philosophical and religious practices. This character does not just offer Proclus an example for women’s ability to attain the same level of virtue than men, but she is also a model for the joint work of philosophical and religious practices. Thereby she stands for practices which are orientated on the human condition and therefore depend on intermediary entities as demons, and for practices which transcend both the human condition and the intermediary entities. Most interesting in Proclus’ presentation of Diotima as a priestess and a philosopher is that he does not present her to fulfill these roles by masculinizing her soul through a sole focus on the intelligible entities – as for example Porphyry advises his wife Marcella – but by using the female element in her soul, i.e. the circuit of the Different, as an intermediate through which she can get in touch with the demons and – through them – also with higher entities. The ideal which Diotima incorporates is therefore not becoming masculine (despite having a female body) but harmonizing the male and female elements within the soul.

We are therefore pleased to present this special issue titled Theorising women and war in Kurdistan: A feminist and critical perspective with a focus on the role of women as actors as well as victims in war and conflict. The guest editors, Nazand Begikhani, Wendelmoet Hamelink and Nerina Weiss, are long-time members of the Kurdish Studies Network (KSN) and have each previously published relevant and memorable work themselves, and for this issue they have brought together a set of remarkable papers, each of which offers a new and unusual perspective on cases of gendered violence.

The involvement of English women in the radical Protestant movements of the 1640s and 1650s has attracted the attention of a number of modern historians. The hub of such studies is Keith Thomas's provocative 1958 essay, “Women and the Civil War Sects,” which focuses on the expanded role of women in these groups and on the way in which sectarian views indirectly undermined the patriarchal family. More recently, Dorothy Ludlow has studied female preachers in this period, insisting that they were not fanatics but sober women with a distinctive sense of Christian calling who claimed full membership in the Christian community. The more well-known women, such as Anne Hutchinson and Mary Cary, have been the subject of recent studies in their own right. For the period after 1660, Pamela Volkman has examined the contrasting ways in which male and female converts to the sects were depicted, noting that women were more likely to be accused of emotional volatility, immorality, or even insanity than were men. These studies have progressed to the point that we are in no danger of overlooking the role of women in English Nonconformity in the mid-seventeenth century.

In the four decades straddling the turn of the nineteenth century, the small Ontario town of Niagara-on-the-Lake experienced marked growth in its tourism industry. Catering predominantly to wealthy upper-middle-class Canadian and American visitors, the lake-side settlement offered numerous opportunities for polite recreation. Chief among them was lawn tennis, a sport that sat somewhat outside of the mainstream in terms of its high-class, mixed-sex participation demographic. While its players were imbued with a strong amateur philosophy, local boosters recognized the sport’s potential to generate tourism income through its two tournaments, but this hinged on the outward presentation among its players/guests of refined gentility—a reflection of both class and gender—both on and off the court. This article considers how lawn tennis tournaments fit into the town’s burgeoning tourism industry, and examines gender relations—particularly the role of women—in relation to this development.

For a long time, history of women was not in the mainstream of interest. The interest for this topic was not shown untill the twentieth century. The aim of this paper is to present a long and difficult struggle to gain the status similar to the one women have nowadays. It is difficult to understand the present reality without going back to the past. The role of women is undergoing a lot of changes all the time. This subject is a huge field for research. The article attempts to give a summary of publications which deal with women’s issues.

Dalam masyarakat agama akan selalu terjadi perdebatan antara kelompok yang bertahan dengan teks sebagaimana adanya dengan pihak-pihak yang mencoba membaca teks dalam konteks dan membuatnya selaras dengan perkembangan paradigma baru dalam kehidupan kekinian. Salah satu topik yang merefleksikan fenomena di atas adalah ketika wacana gender yang adalah problematika kehidupan cosmopolitan modern dihadapkan dengan teks-teks suci yang telah berusia berabad-abad yang lalu. Tidaklah mengherankan bila kemudian terjadi perdebatan yang serius tentang kemampuan masyarakat agama di dalam merespon issu gender ini. Artikel ini berusaha untuk mengungkapkan pengkajian Islam modern  dengan mempelajari suatu pendekatan baru yang popular dengan istilah pendekatan gender di dalam melakukan analisa terhadap ayat-ayat maupun hadis nabi dan istinbat hukum terutama di dalam menggambarkan posisi dan peranan kaum wanita serta hubungan mereka dengan kaum laki-laki. Dalam artikel ini akan ditemukan secara jelas bahwa Konsep relasi gender di dalam Alquran merefleksikan dua kesan yang berbeda secara theologies dan sosiologis.   In religious societies there will always be debates between groups that persist with the text as it is with parties who try to read the text in context and make it in harmony with the development of new paradigms in contemporary life. One topic that reflects the above phenomenon is when gender discourse is a problem of modern cosmopolitan life confronted with sacred texts that have been centuries old. It is not surprising then that serious debate ensues about the ability of religious communities to respond to this gender issue. This article seeks to express the study of modern Islam by studying a new app roach that is popular with the term gender approach in analyzing the verses and traditions of the prophet and legal istinbat especially in describing the position and role of women and their relationship with men . In this article it will be clearly found that the concept of gender relations in the Koran reflects two different theological and sociological impressions.
