This further contribution to the knowledge of the foliicolous lichen flora of Costa Rica provides a detailed account on the genus Fellhanera. In total, 25 species and five undescribed taxa are treated. Ten species are described as new: Fellhanera angustispora sp.n., F. dictyospora sp.n., F. dispersa sp.n., F. emarginata sp.n., F. pilomarginata sp.n., F. longispora sp.n., F. muhlei sp.n., F. montana sp.n., F. verrucifera sp.n., and F. viridis sp.n. New combinations are F. pauciseptata (R. Sant.) R. Lücking comb.n. [Bas.: Bacidia pauciseptata R. Sant.] and F. rubida (Müll. Arg.) R. Lücking comb.n. [Bas.: Patellaria rubida Müll. Arg.]. F. dominicana (Vain.) Vezda is placed into synonymy with F. fuscatula (Müll. Arg.) Vezda, whose type has 7-septate ascospores, and the name F. subfuscatula R. Lücking sp.n. is introduced for the taxon with 5-septate ascospores formerly known as F. fuscatula. F. misionensis Ferraro & R. Lücking ined. and F. sublecanorina (Nyl.) Vezda are reported for the first time from Costa Rica. The formerly invalidly published names F. farinosa nom. nud. and F. pilosa nom. nud. are considered to be synonyms of F. fuscatula (Müll. Arg.) Vezda and F. rhapidophylli (Rehm) Vezda, respectively. Specimens identified as F. tuckeri nom. nud. belong to F. rhapidophylli as well. F. buxi is excluded from the foliicolous lichen flora of Costa Rica. A keys is provided to the complex group of species of Fellhanera with brownish apothecia and 3-septate ascospores. Infrageneric relationships within Fellhanera are briefly discussed, and notes on the ecology of the species are provided.

AbstractThe taxonomy of the foliicolous members of Arthoniaceae (Anhonia, Arthothelium, Cryptothecia, Eremothecella) in Costa Rica is revised. Cryptothecia farkasiae sp. nov. is described, being closely related to Stirtonia sprucei, and bearing pycnidia reminiscent of Eremothecella. Anhonia lividofusca is placed in synonymy with A. aciniformis. Pycnidia and pycnospores are further described for Anhonialeptosperma, A. cyanea, A. palmulacea, A. trilocularis, Anhothelium cingulatum, Stinonia sprucei and S. macrocephala, and campylidia were found on thalli of Anhonia aciniformis. Anhonia nigratula and Cryptothecia Candida are reported for the first time from Costa Rica, and new localities are given for previously reported species. Ecological data are provided, and the relationships between foliicolous members of the Arthoniaceae are discussed.

AbstractThis paper provides a revision of the foliicolous representatives of the Gyalectaceae in Costa Rica. Five species of Coenogonium and 13 of Dimerella are distinguished. Coenogonium interplexum, C. interpositum, C. leprieurii, C. linkii and Dimerella vezdana are ubiquitous as to the choice of their substratum, whereas C. moniliforme and Dimerella lutea are facultatively foliicolous. The remainder are typically foliicolous taxa but may occasionally be found on bark. The following species are for the first time reported as foliicolous from Costa Rica: Coenogonium interplexum, C. interpositum, C. leprieurii, C. moniliforme, Dimerella fallaciosa, D lisowskii, and D. aff. pilifera. Three new species are described: Dimerella isidiifera sp. nov. with disciform isidia, D. subzonatasp. nov. with small, bright yellow, dentate apothecia and a whitish prothallus, and D. siquirrensis sp. nov. with large, orange apothecia and a thin whitish prothallus. A key is presented for neotropical foliicolous Gyalectaceae, and notes on the distribution and ecology of the species are given.

Seven genera new to science, i.e.: Helmutiopsis, Huriopsis, Johnsheardia, Klauskalbia, Kudratovia, Kurokawia and Poeltonia of the Physciaceae are proposed for the ‘Rinodina’ atrocinerea, the ‘Rinodina’ xanthophaea, the ‘Rinodina’ cinnamomea, the ‘Heterodermia’ obscurata, the ‘Rinodina’ straussii, the ‘Anaptychia’ isidiata and the ‘Physconia’ grisea groups consequently that all form strongly supported monophyletic branches in a phylogeny analysis based on a combined matrix of nrITS and mtSSU sequences. Phylogenetic positions of species belonging to the genera Kashiwadia s. l., Leucodermia, Mischoblastia,Oxnerella, Phaeorrhiza s. l., Polyblastidium and Rinodinella s. l. are discussed. Oxnerella afghanica which for the first time recorded as parasitic lichen species from both epiphytic and saxicolous crustose lichens is designated as type species for the genus Oxnerella. Sequences of the recently described Physcia orientostellaris as well as Huriopsis xanthophaea and additional sequences of Kashiwadia aff. orientalis and Mischoblastia aff. oxydata are submitted to the GenBank. The positions of Polyblastidium casaterrinum from Costa Rica, ‘Rinodina’ efflorescens from Białowieża, Poland, and ‘Mischoblastia’ confragosula from Cambodia in the Physciaceae are confirmed in a phylogeny analysis based on the nrITS sequences. The presence of ‘extraneous mycobiont DNA’ in lichen associations is exemplified with earlier incorrect identifications of Heterodermia, Kashiwadia, Kurokawia,Oxnerella and Poeltonia specimens. Fifty-six new combinations are presented: Helmutiopsis alba (for Rinodina alba Metzler ex Arn.), Helmutiopsis aspersa (for Lecanora aspersa Borrer), Helmutiopsis atrocinerea (for Parmelia atrocinerea Fr.), Huriopsis chrysidiata (for Rinodina chrysidiata Sheard), Huriopsis chrysomelaena (for Rinodina chrysomelaena Tuck.), Huriopsis lepida (for Lecanora lepida Nyl.), Huriopsis luteonigra (for Rinodina luteonigra Zahlbr.), Huriopsis plana (for Rinodina plana H. AbstractAn account of the lichens of the Ben Lawers–Meall nan Tarmachan area is provided. After re-evaluating the older records, 431 species are accepted as having been reliably recorded from high ground of which 118 are reported for the first time. These include Bacidia carneopallida, Caloplaca ammiospila, C. approximata, Catapyrenium daedaleum, Ionaspis cyanocarpa, Micarea crassipes, Ochrolechia inaequatula, Omphalina pararustica, Phaeophyscia endococcina, Porocyphus rehmtcus, Protolhelenella leucothelia, Stereocaulon tornensis, and Toninia fusispora new to the British Isles. Rarities are particularly numerous on the summit cliffs and in the Lochan nan Cat corrie. An ecological description of the lichen flora of the main localities is provided. Evidence is advanced that this concentration of arctic-alpine lichens is a result of the coincidence of strongly calcareous bands within the mica-schist, an unusually severe climate, and the rugged topography which provides extensive outcrops right to the summit. The lichen flora is probably the most outstanding feature of the botany of Ben Lawers; this survey confirms the international importance of the area. One new species, Pyrenopsis multispora Coppins, is described and three new combinations are made: Bacidia carneopallida (Müll. Arg.) Coppins, B. tetramera (de Not.) Coppins, Kiliasia scotinodes (Nyl.) Coppins.

AbstractA synopsis of 26 species belonging to 10 genera of Caliciales (s.lat.) occurring in Costa Rica is given. Short comments on the ecology and distribution of the species, indications of occurrence of secondary substances, and observations on the ultrastructure of the spores in some species are included. The mainly tropical genera Pyrgidium, Schistophoron and Tylophoron are given particular attention. Seventeen species are new to Central America and the following five new to science: Caliciurn constrictum sp. nov., Chaenothecopsis rubina sp. nov., Coniocybe sanguinea sp. nov., Schistophoron variabile sp. nov., and Tylophoron crassiusculum sp. nov. Two new combinations, Mycocalicium albonigrum (Nyl.) comb. nov. and Pyrgidium montellicum (Beltr.) comb, nov., are made. Lectotypes have been designated for Tylophoron annulatum Krempelh., T. cupulare Vainio, T. moderatum var. consociata Vainio and T. rufocapillatum Nádv. Names of several taxa in Pyrgidium and Tylophoron have been put into synonomy. Arthothelin, thuringione and thiophanic acid (in Calicium hyperelloides Nyl.) and lecanoric acid, 2'-O-methylperlatoic acid and lichexanthone (in Tylophoron) are reported for the first time in the Caliciales.

Records of 48 species belonging to the order Arthoniales from Bolivia are presented. Cryptothecia rosae-iselae Flakus & Kukwa and Lecanactis minuta Ertz, Flakus & Kukwa are described as new to science. Thirty-seven species are reported for the first time from Bolivia, seven of which, Alyxoria apomelaena, Cryptothecia darwiniana, C. groenhartii, C. megalocarpa, Herpothallon furfuraceum, Lecanographa uniseptata, and Opegrapha subvulgata, are new to South America. This raises the number of Arthoniales known from the country up to 72. Two new combinations are proposed: Alyxoria apomelaena (A. Massal.) Ertz for Opegrapha apomelaena A. Massal. and Myriostigma napoense (Kalb & Jonitz) Kukwa for Cryptothecia napoensis Kalb & Jonitz. Cresponea melanocheiloides is the second species of the genus shown to contain a xantholepinone. Cresponea melanocheiloides is reported as new to Costa Rica and Panama, Cryptothecia megalocarpa as new to the Netherlands Antilles and Guyana and C. striata is new to Colombia, Costa Rica, French Guiana and the Netherlands Antilles. Distribution data are reported for each species, with taxonomic remarks provided for new and some problematic taxa.
