This essay examines the objects in George Oppen's Discrete Series (1934). It considers their primary property to be their hardness – many of them have distinctively uniform and impenetrable surfaces. This hardness and uniformity is contrasted with 19th century organicism (Gerard Manley Hopkins and John Ruskin). Taking my cue from Kirsten Blythe Painter I show how in their work with hard objects these poems participate within a wider cultural and philosophical turn towards hardness in the early twentieth century (Marcel Duchamp, Adolf Loos, Ludwig Wittgenstein and others). I describe the thinking these poems do with regard to industrialization and to human experience of a resolutely object world – I argue that the presentation of these objects bears witness to the production history of the type of objects which in this era are becoming preponderant in parts of the world. Finally, I suggest that the objects’ impenetrability offers a kind of anti-aesthetic relief: perception without conception. If ‘philosophy recognizes the Concept in everything’ it is still possible, these poems show, to experience resistance to this imperious process of conceptualization. Within thinking objects (poems) these are objects which do not think.

O presente artigo trabalha com a perspectiva da arte como espelho transformador das consciências, como defendido por Arthur Danto, em diálogo com a análise de Jacques Leenhardt sobre a obra “Etant Donnés”, de Marcel Duchamp, a fim de pensar, em última instância, se a própria realidade poderia funcionar como um espelho, uma vez que habitamos um momento histórico em que a distinção entre arte e realidade perdeu sua evidência e em que estamos submersos em reflexos (selfies e black mirrors) e imagens clichês (imagens readymades) em excesso.

This article gives an overview of the influence of the work of Michel Foucault on the philosophy of Agamben. Discussed are Foucault’s influence on the Homo Sacer cycle, on (the development) of Agamben’s notion of power (and on his closely related notion of freedom and art of life), as well as on Agamben’s philosophy of language and methodology. While most commentaries focus on Agamben’s interpretation of Foucault’s concept of biopower, his work also contains many interesting references to Foucault on freedom and possibilities—and I think that it is here that Foucault’s influence on Agamben is most deeply felt. This article focuses on the shifts Agamben takes while looking for the Entwicklungsfähigkeit in the work of Foucault.

Resumen En este artículo se analiza un caso singular en la poesía española reciente: la poética de la desaparición de Eduardo Scala. En contra del encumbramiento del autor en el Campo Literario, Scala lleva a cabo un proceso de auto-borrado en dos fases. En primer lugar, quema toda su obra anterior y se renombra a sí mismo “Don Nadie” para lograr un proyecto místico de des-identificación. Mediante esta clausura, puede tener lugar la siguiente etapa: un “nuevo nacimiento” que propicia la apertura de la poesía. La producción scaliana comienza en la posmodernidad literaria española, tiene en cuenta las propuestas artísticas negativas de Marcel Duchamp o John Cage y conoce la filosofía Roland Barthes y su texto La muerte del autor. Sin embargo, las principales fuentes de Scala se encuentran en la tradición mística; especialmente, son esenciales dos conceptos: la «renuncia» y la «nada». Para complementar la explicación de esta ascestética, se empleará un enfoque desde la Sociología de la Literatura.
