School districts are a focus of education reform efforts in the United States, but there is very little existing research about how important they are to student achievement. We fill this gap in the literature using 10 years of student-level, statewide data on fourth- and fifth-grade students in Florida and North Carolina. A variance decomposition analysis based on hierarchical linear models indicates that districts account for only a small share (1 to 2 percent) of the total variation in student achievement. Nevertheless, the differences between lower- and higher-performing districts are large enough to be of practical and policy significance, with a one standard deviation difference in district effectiveness corresponding to about 0.11 standard deviations in student achievement (about nine weeks of schooling). District performance is generally stable over time, but there are examples of districts that have shown significant increases or decreases in performance.

Beginning in 2009, and with the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, school districts across the United States began to be held to higher standards and their progress publicly reported.  Student achievement began to be measured by standardized testing and great efforts were being made to reduce the achievement gap. This paper is based on a five-year study of teacher evaluation in two urban districts in Massachusetts where improving teacher practice was seen as an important factor in raising student achievement. This research studied efforts to address those teachers who were identified as underperforming and were supported through individual improvement plans.  This paper used a case study approach to show what the practices of a sampling of these teachers looked like, teachers’ reactions to being rated unsatisfactory, and teachers’ reactions to the improvement planning process.

The attitudes and attention of parents, both father and mother, towards their children in learning activities will have a positive effect on learning outcomes. Parents attention can be shown by communication. Communication made by parents to their children in an atmosphere of intimacy by asking about their learning at school or the difficulties they face can help children in learning. People who supervise their children's education will be able to find out student achievement so that parents can take action against their children if the child's learning achievement decreases. The research methodology includes the location of this research is SD Negeri Kaliwungu Kudus. The population as well as the sample of all fifth grade students of SD Negeri 1 Kaliwungu Kudus totaled 25 students. In this study. Data collection techniques using observation, questionnaires, documentation, interviews. The data analysis technique used simple lineier regression analysis. The results of the F test obtained F results of 50.612 with a significance of 0.00 so that it can be concluded that there is a variable influence of people's attention on student achievement variables, with the conclusion that if F count is greater than F table or the level of significance / probability is 0.000 <0.05. then the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, the Work Hypothesis (Ha) which says there is a variable influence of parental attention on student learning achievement variables is accepted

The call for accountability within education has led to the increased examination of the academic achievement of students across the nation. Too often, however, schools and school districts are scrutinized by means of overly simplistic linear models that fail to consider the complexity of interactions that result in student achievement. This paper postulates that student achievement is instead best understood as a developmental outcome that emerges as a result of interactions among layers within a complex system. Organizations such as schools can be modeled using Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems and analyzed using complexity theory as an appropriate and useful alternative to the linear models that often form the basis of educational research and policy. Key elements of both Bronfenbrenner’s ecological-contextual theory and complexity are explained and applied at the level of an individual school.

AbstractIn the United States, the reform of the financial system of capital expenditure is under consideration, as people believe the current system through local referenda contributes to inequality in student achievement across school districts. Several studies using a regression discontinuity design (RDD) find zero to modest positive effects of capital expenditure on student achievement; however, these studies identify only the effect of capital expenditure financed by a marginally passed bond with a vote share at the cutoff. In this paper I estimate the average effect of capital expenditure on student achievement by incorporating a latent factor model into the existing RDD framework, and comparing school districts that are similar in their underlying confounding variables, namely preferences for educational investment. The results show that, on average, capital expenditure financed by a passed bond does not have significant effect on student achievement.

Students are accustomed to memorizing facts, principles, formulas, laws and problems given by the teacher, thus understanding the concept tends to be low. Description of daily test value obtained from 25 students that is, the average value of 54.80 with the percentage of the value reached 48% only KKM. From the description above we need the new treatments to improve student achievement and learning activities. In order to improve learning outcomes, it can be improved through demonstration methods and media in the form of real objects that exist around, so that students no longer have difficulty in understanding the material. Based on the above, then that becomes the problem in this study can be formulated as follows: 1) Do the media magnets, magnetic objects, cable and battery can improve student achievement at the fifth grade student in SD Negeri 08 Pinang sebatang Timur Kecamatan Tualang Kabupaten Siak about making magnets ? 2) Does the demonstration method can improve students' learning activities at the fifth grade students in SD Negeri 08 Pinang sebatang Timur Kecamatan Tualang Kabupaten Siak about making a magnet? The subject in this classroom action research is a fifth grade students of SDN 08 Pinang sebatang Timur Kecamatan Tualang Kabupaten Siak at the second semester in the academic year 2014/2015 the number of students 25 people, consisting of 9 men and 16 women with different levels of ability to understand the lesson. Classroom action research was carried out in SDN 08 Pinang sebatang Timur Kecamatan Tualang Kabupaten Siak. Researchers take this location or place with the consideration of working at the school concerned, making it easier in search of data, the opportunity of time wide and subject of the research that is in accordance with the profession researchers. Based on the results above we concluded that the application of methods of demonstration can improve student learning outcomes in science subjects in SDN 08 Pinang sebatang Timur Kecamatan Tualang Kabupaten Siak in second semester of 2014/2015.

This paper investigates the impact of customer compatibility—the degree of fit between customers’ needs and the capabilities of the operations serving them—on customer experiences and firm performance. We use variance decomposition analysis to quantify the relative importance of customer, employee, process, location, and market-level effects on customer satisfaction. In our models, which explain roughly a quarter of the aggregate variance, differences among customers account for 96%–97% of the explainable portion. Further analysis of interaction-level data from banking and quick-service restaurants reveals that customers report relatively consistent satisfaction across transactions with particular firms but that some customers are habitually more satisfied than others. A second set of empirical studies provides evidence that these customer-level differences are explained in part by customer compatibility. Customers whose needs, proxied by differences in demographics and product choices, diverge more starkly from those of their bank’s average customers report significantly lower levels of satisfaction. Consistently, banks that serve customer bases with more dispersed needs receive lower satisfaction scores than banks serving customer bases with less dispersed needs. Finally, a longitudinal analysis of the deposit and loan growth of all federally insured banks in the United States from 2006 to 2017 reveals that customer compatibility affects a firm’s financial performance. Branches with more divergent customers grow more slowly than branches with less divergent customers. Institutions serving customer bases with more dispersed needs have branches that exhibit slower growth than those of institutions serving customer bases with less dispersed needs.
