Psychosocial importance of humor in reduction of anxiety and communication was developed, with specific consideration of group influence on perception of humor. Subjects were 15 black females, 20 white females, 13 black males, and 16 white males. Cartoons depicting seven humorous themes were rank ordered in terms of ‘funniness.’ Group mean ranks were transformed into ordinal integers. Groups applied similar concepts of humor to rankings ( W = .68, p < .05), though rank correlations showed significant relationships only between white females, black females, and white males.

Abstract From hospital records and from death certificates, an attempt was made to assemble data on all residents of the Borough of Brooklyn diagnosed as having leukemia in the period 1943-52. A total of 1792 abstracts of hospital records and 1830 death certificates gave information on 1709 patients. The mean Brooklyn population over the same period is used to express incidences of the various forms of leukemia in relation to color, sex and age. The incidence of leukemia in white males and females was 71.3 and 57.7 per million per annum respectively. Corresponding rates for Negroes were 46.5 and 30.6. The white-Negro difference was decreased but not eliminated by standardization to allow for differences in the age distributions of the two populations. Sex ratios were lower for the acute forms of the disease than for the chronic forms, and, in both acute and chronic forms, for myeloid than for lymphatic cell types. No relationship of sex ratio with age at diagnosis or initial white cell count was found. Each pathologic variety of leukemia has its own distinct age incidence curve. The lymphatic forms appear to be more sharply associated with the extremes of life than do the myeloid varieties. That is, acute lymphatic leukemia appears at a younger age than does acute myeloid leukemia and the chronic lymphatic form appears at an older average age than the chronic myeloid variety.

Self-esteem and death anxiety instruments were administered to a total of 383 undergraduates; black and white, males and females were included in the sample. Consistent with previous data, higher scores on death anxiety were shown by female subjects. Black males displayed significantly higher self-esteem scores. An analysis of subgroups low and high in self-esteem produced support for a negative relationship between level of self-esteem and death anxiety.

This study explored the relationship between non-organic factors and perceived disability for work-injured Hispanic and White workers in Northern New Mexico. The results showed that Hispanic males perceived themselves to be significantly more disabled than White males and than Hispanic females. Also, less educated workers perceived themselves as significantly more disabled than those with more education, regardless of ethnicity. These findings indicate that the rehabilitation process of injured Hispanic workers is a complex one in which various systems interact including the injured worker, the family, the employer, the health care provider, the insurance company, the attorney, and the workers' compensation adjuster.

Discriminant function analyses were computed from scores compiled in a comprehensive, 32-variable, data bank using grade-point average groups as criteria. Separate constellations of variables predicted academic performance for each group (divided by race and sex). Black males' ( n = 12) and females' ( n = 25) academic performance could not be predicted by standardized tests but was predicted by a study habits inventory. The study habits inventory and the California Short-form Test of Mental Maturity predicted academic success for white males and females ( ns = 62 and 113, respectively). However, for the females it was concluded that the relationship of the student with the teacher was the important determinant of academic success.

1. The maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) of the dominant quadriceps muscle was measured in 136 healthy White and 172 healthy Hindu Asian subjects resident in London, using a specially designed chair equipped with a force measuring load cell. 2. Males were stronger than females, and for both sexes MVC declined with age. From age 20 to 60 the annual decline in MVC ranged from 0.56% in White males to 1.5% in female Asians. 3. White subjects were stronger than Asian subjects even after correcting for the effect of age, height, weight and sex in a multi-factorial analysis. 4. Only in males did MVC correlate with height and weight. Asian women were more obese than any other group, and showed an increase in body mass index with age. 5. Twenty-two per cent of Asian subjects had marked vitamin D deficiency (plasma 25-hydroxycholecalciferol < 10 nmol/l). There was no correlation between MVC, and plasma 25-hydroxycholecalciferol.

The Mesozoic-Cenozoic coral Order Scleractinia has been suggested to have originated or evolved (1) by direct descent from the Paleozoic Order Rugosa or (2) by the development of a skeleton in members of one of the anemone groups that probably have existed throughout Phanerozoic time. In spite of much work on the subject, advocates of the direct descent hypothesis have failed to find convincing evidence of this relationship. Critical points are:(1) Rugosan septal insertion is serial; Scleractinian insertion is cyclic; no intermediate stages have been demonstrated. Apparent intermediates are Scleractinia having bilateral cyclic insertion or teratological Rugosa.(2) There is convincing evidence that the skeletons of many Rugosa were calcitic and none are known to be or to have been aragonitic. In contrast, the skeletons of all living Scleractinia are aragonitic and there is evidence that fossil Scleractinia were aragonitic also. The mineralogic difference is almost certainly due to intrinsic biologic factors.(3) No early Triassic corals of either group are known. This fact is not compelling (by itself) but is important in connection with points 1 and 2, because, given direct descent, both changes took place during this only stage in the history of the two groups in which there are no known corals.
