<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Dermatologists see many patients with nail disorders requiring surgical interventions. However, nail surgery is often found to be difficult by dermatologists. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an integrated nail surgery course. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> A nail surgery course model, combining anatomy, pathology, and dermatology with theoretical lectures and hands-on training on fresh-frozen cadaver, was designed for dermatologists. Before and after the course, the participants were asked to complete a questionnaire in which they assessed their knowledge and competence levels. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Twenty-eight dermatologists completed the questionnaires. The majority of the dermatologists (79.6%) had limited nail surgery experience, previously. The most commonly cited reasons for lack of knowledge or low or moderate theoretical and/or practical level of knowledge of nail surgery were not having received theoretical and practical education during dermatology residency. The median scores of self-assessed knowledge and competency improved significantly after the course (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001). The majority (82.1%) of the participants were “quite” or “very” well satisfied. <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> An integrative nail surgery course model seems beneficial and encouraging for dermatologists. Organizing this type of nail surgery course, especially in medical schools using fresh-frozen cadavers, may significantly improve dermatologists’ knowledge and skills.

Introduction: Patients with heart diseases who require emergency care need rapid diagnosis and treatment. Medical students are usually among the first individuals to be trained to help these patients in the course of their internship in the treatment chain and have a significant role in reducing mortality and morbidity among patients with heart diseases referred to the emergency ward. Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study that was conducted in Tabriz, Iran, in 2016, 100 medical students were enrolled in a census course. Knowledge, attitude, and skill of interns toward airway management were evaluated in patients by the students before and after the cardiac internship using a valid and reliable researcher-made self-assessment questionnaire. Data were then analyzed using SPSS software. Results: Although the level of knowledge and skill of the interns before and after the cardiovascular education course was significant (P ≤ 0.001), the knowledge and skill scores were lower than the average before and after the course. There was no significant relationship between the gender of the interns with knowledge, attitude, and skill. There was also no significant relationship between the marital status of the participants and the level of knowledge and skills of the interns. Married people had a more positive attitude toward managing patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) compared others (P = 0.013). Conclusion: The level of knowledge and skills of interns in dealing with cardiac patients, before and after the education of cardiac course was low, requiring more attention to training of students in this field.

Abstract Aims According to Good Surgical Practice set by the RCS England, surgeons need to keep themselves up to date and maintain the competence in all areas of their practice. Literature and guidelines recommended the use of AirSeal insufflation in laparoscopic surgery for the safety during the first surge of Covid-19. Our objectives were to measure the level of knowledge and confidence of surgical trainees in using the AirSeal insufflation system in laparoscopic surgery at our institution and to help trainees achieve competence. Method Multiple small group training sessions were delivered to 14 surgical doctors adhering to safety protocols. The concept of the AirSeal insufflation system, its benefits, limitations, set up and troubleshooting were delivered using lectures, videos and hands-on training. The change in level of knowledge and confidence in practical skills were assessed by analyzing the responses to the questionnaire completed before and after the course. Results Conclusion The dramatic improvement in self-perceived confidence of practical skills and knowledge of the AirSeal system was achieved among surgical doctors. Adaptation to the situation and introduction of this advanced technology to the trainees in elective and emergency settings helped promote the skills and safety at workplace during this pandemic especially with the support of flexible training sessions.

Telepractice, defined by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA, n.d.) as “the application of telecommunications technology to the delivery of professional services at a distance by linking clinician to client, or clinician to clinician, for assessment, intervention, and/or consultation,” is a quickly growing aspect of practicing audiology. However, only 12% of audiologists are involved in providing services via telepractice (REDA International, Inc., 2002). Lack of knowledge regarding telepractice has been cited as one of the reasons many audiologists do not use telepractice to provide audiology services. This study surveyed audiology doctoral students regarding their opinions about the use of telepractice both before and after their opportunity to provide services via telepractice sessions. The authors expected that by providing students the opportunity to have hands-on training in telepractice with supervision, they would be more open to using telepractice after becoming licensed audiologists. Overall, the data indicates benefits of exposing students to telepractice while they are in graduate school.

AbstractEndometriosis impairs the quality of life (QoL) of many women, including their social relationships, daily activity, productivity at work, and family planning. The aim of this review was to determine the instruments used to examine QoL in previous clinical studies of endometriosis and to evaluate the effect of medical and surgical interventions for endometriosis on QoL. We conducted a systematic search and review of studies published between January 2010 and December 2020 using MEDLINE. Search terms included “endometriosis” and “quality of life.” We only selected studies that used a standardized questionnaire to evaluate QoL before and after medical or surgical interventions. Only articles in the English language were examined. The initial search identified 720 results. After excluding duplicates and applying inclusion criteria, 37 studies were selected for analysis. We found that the two scales most frequently used to measure QoL were the Short Form-36 health survey questionnaire (SF-36) and the Endometriosis Health Profile-30 (EHP-30). Many medical and surgical treatments demonstrated comparable benefits in pain control and QoL improvement. There is no clear answer as to what is the best treatment for improving QoL because each therapy must be personalized for the patient and depends on the woman’s goals. In conclusion, women must be informed about endometriosis and given easily accessible information to improve treatment adherence and their QoL.

The purpose of this evaluation was to determine the effect of intensive, interactive training on hospital workers’ preparedness for special pathogen cases by utilizing the Frontline Facility Special Pathogens Training Course created by the Systemwide Special Pathogens Program at New York City Health + Hospitals (NYC H+H). An 8 h course was offered in 2018 and 2019 to healthcare employees throughout the Department of Health and Human Services Region 2, mostly from NYC H+H. Evaluation included multiple-choice pre and post exams, a 26-question survey about level of preparedness before and after the training, and follow-up interviews focused on changes in facility protocols. As a result, 61% of survey respondents indicated that they had never previously attended a hospital-sponsored special pathogen training. After the training, there was a 53.3% report rate of feeling “very prepared,” compared to 14.6% before the training. Additionally, there was an 11% improvement in test scores. Furthermore, 77% of respondents reported that their facility had changed protocols relating to topics of the course after their training date. Survey participants reported general satisfaction with the course, as well as an increased level of preparedness for special pathogen cases. Together, the results of the exams, survey, and interviews suggest that this interactive, mixed-method training increases special pathogen preparedness across different healthcare sectors. With the ongoing threat of special pathogens, the need for continued training and maintaining a state of readiness is paramount in healthcare.

Organ recovery coordinators (ORCs) have varied professional education backgrounds; however, based on their specialized education, their training may not have included in-depth mechanical ventilation and pulmonary management. An 8-hour pulmonary workshop was developed in collaboration between an organ procurement organization and a university-based respiratory care department. The workshop focused on pulmonary management and hands-on laboratory exercises using mechanical ventilators. A program assessment questionnaire was completed by participants following the workshop, which requested their self-reported comfort/familiarity with pulmonary management skills before and after the workshop on a 5-point Likert scale. Following the pulmonary workshop, the mean ORC comfort/familiarity for all pulmonary management skills increased significantly ( P < .01). This program suggests ORCs can develop a greater awareness and comfort with pulmonary management by participating in a continuing education pulmonary workshop. Continuing education initiatives focused on pulmonary management of donor patients using hands-on competencies should be part of the ORCs practice improvement efforts.

The formation of a powerful, active, and dynamic axiological foundation of personality is one of the essential tasks of the competency approach because even a high level of knowledge and skills acquired in the process of learning and education cannot ensure the integrity and progressively oriented unity of personal and professional competencies for future successful life, socio-cultural and professional self-realization. Given this, within the competence paradigm of education, qualitatively new content is the unity of learning and education. If before a significant amount of theoretical knowledge, detached from real life, had a shallow educational potential, now any pedagogical action, even focused on the cognitive assimilation of basic scientific knowledge, will have a worldview. An essential characteristic of the competency approach in education is that it can ensure each student’s unique structure the unity of knowledge, competencies, and values.
