In this essay, I demonstrate how the ecological concept of “scaling” carries potential to animate critical logics in the Anthropocene. I argue that scaling can expose unexpected linkages across space and time that help to denaturalize particular ecological formations as entangled, rather than separate. I demonstrate the critical ecological potential of scaling by performing it rhizomatically, weaving across scales of space and time while juxtaposing theoretical concepts with my experiences of life as a resident in the urban desert landscape of Phoenix, AZ. This ecology ultimately reveals how climate change acts as a complex necropolitic of the Anthropocene.

Stephen’s musings on the pre-cinematic ‘stereoscope’ are discussed in relation to Bloom’s contemplation of parallax and his mention of the ‘Mutoscope’. The three-dimensionality, tangibility, and tactility of stereoscopic perception is analysed alongside Bloom’s and Gerty’s encounter in ‘Nausicaa’ and the Merleau-Pontian concepts of ‘flesh’ and ‘intercorporeity’. The bodily effects of projected cinema—achieved through virtual film worlds, virtual film bodies, and the intercorporeity of film and spectator—are discussed through reference to panorama, phantom ride, and crash films. The dizzying effects of some of these films are compared to the vertiginous nature of the ‘Wandering Rocks’ episode of Ulysses; these cinematic and literary vestibular disturbances are elucidated through gestalt theory and the phenomenological concepts of ‘intention’, ‘attention’, and the ‘phenomenal field’. Finally, the relationship between the self and the other is considered, through a discussion of cinematic mirroring in Ulysses and in Mitchell and Kenyon’s fin de siècle Living Dublin films.

Abstract Background Community-dwelling older persons with cognitive impairment (CI) following discharge from geriatric rehabilitation are at high risk of losing life-space mobility (LSM). Interventions to improve their LSM are, however, still lacking. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a CI-specific, home-based physical training and activity promotion program on LSM. Methods Older persons with mild-to-moderate CI (Mini-Mental State Examination: 17–26 points) discharged home from rehabilitation were included in this double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial with a 12-week intervention period and 12-week follow-up period. The intervention group received a CI-specific, home-based strength, balance, and walking training supported by tailored motivational strategies. The control group received a placebo activity. LSM was evaluated by the Life-Space Assessment in Persons with Cognitive Impairment, including a composite score for LSM and 3 subscores for maximal, equipment-assisted, and independent life space. Mixed-model repeated-measures analyses were used. Results One hundred eighteen participants (82.3 ± 6.0 years) with CI (Mini-Mental State Examination: 23.3 ± 2.4) were randomized. After the intervention, the home-based training program resulted in a significant benefit in the Life-Space Assessment in Persons with Cognitive Impairment composite scores (b = 8.15; 95% confidence interval: 2.89–13.41; p = .003) and independent life-space subscores (b = 0.39; 95% confidence interval: 0.00–0.78; p = .048) in the intervention group (n = 63) compared to control group (n = 55). Other subscores and follow-up results were not significantly different. Conclusions The home-based training program improved LSM and independent life space significantly in this vulnerable population. Effects were not sustained over the follow-up. The program may represent a model for improved transition from rehabilitation to the community to prevent high risk of LSM restriction.

Abstract Rural-dwelling veterans with dementia (PWD) and their family caregivers (CG) have unique needs and resource access limitations. Life-Space assessment models suggest older adults’ needs are reflected in their daily-life mobility and routines (Peel et al., 2005). Yet, medical treatment models seldom incorporate non-health related activities (e.g., transportation, groceries, distance to formal and informal support networks). This mixed-methods study proposes an exploratory life-space modeling visualization that integrates qualitative and quantitative daily-life data from rural dwelling dyads in Alabama. Two case studies are selected from a sample of 30 qualitative interviews to demonstrate this innovative analytic approach. One case depicts a married dyad (PWD and spousal CG) (CGage = 74; PWDage = 80, PWD MoCA score = 21) and the second visualization is of a PWD living alone (PWDage = 82, PWD MoCA Score = 20). Daily-life experiences and routines mentioned during interviews were categorized using a rapid analysis template approach and informed by unmet needs theories (Algase et al., 1996). Next, extracted data were placed into mapping visualization software. The maps include visual cues (colors, transportation routes, and icons) to designate met, unmet, and vulnerable needs and resources, allowing visual interaction with the two cases’ dementia caregiving context and qualitative responses. Life-space maps may be useful tools to visualize resource access and assist integrated health care systems in better understanding daily interactions and intervention gaps for difficult to reach populations. Future developments include ecological momentary assessment and Global Positioning System (GPS) data to develop life-space maps using real-time data collection.
