AbstractThis Research Reflection short review will discuss vitamin D metabolism, its role in nutrition, disease prevention, and welfare of dairy cattle, as well as its toxicity. Vitamin D is an important fat-soluble vitamin. However, some researchers regard it as a hormone due to its function in the organism. Its role is not limited just to Ca homoeostasis and bone metabolism but is also associated with immunity. In dairy cattle it is known for preventing milk fever. Cows can acquire vitamin D in many ways for example through feed, parenteral injections or through UVB irradiation from the sun or artificial lighting. The vitamin D in feed can either be plant-/ fungi- based ergocalciferol or animal-based cholecalciferol. There is currently only one registered feed vitamin D supplement for cattle in the European Union and it is cholecalciferol. Animals can also synthesize their own vitamin D when 7-dihydrocholesterol in the skin is irradiated with UVB light resulting in cholecalciferol production. Despite its importance, many cattle are deficient in vitamin D due to inadequate supplementation or insufficient sun exposure. In a study performed at the Veterinary Faculty in Slovenia 12 high producing Holstein Friesian cows at a commercial dairy farm were blood tested for vitamin D status for three succeeding months and all but one were vitamin D insufficient in all testings. The cows were not exposed to direct sunlight and the content of vitamin D3 in feed was <400 IU/kg dry matter, which is less than half of the NRC (2001) recommendation. Deficiency can also occur due to diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract, such as paratuberculosis, which lower the absorptive capacity of the gut. Vitamin D can be toxic if cows are over-supplemented or consume large quantities of plants like Trisetum flavescens, which contain an active form of vitamin D-calcitriol or its glycosides, that are activated by digestion in the rumen.

Anxiety, Depression and stress are one of the most prevalent psychological problems witnessed in post-menopausal women. These complaints are mostly neglected by the females and ignored due to social stigmas and lack of awareness amongst the elderly population regarding the same. It often affects the quality of life and is thus essential to diagnose and treat on time. Reduced Vitamin D and estrogen levels are one of the proposed culprits behind these psychological disorders in post-menopausal women which will be discussed in this review.Systematic literature review was done with the help of data search domains such as Pubmed, Scopus, Web of science and google scholar. Case reports, observational studies and cross-sectional studies were included in this review.Depression and anxiety are common problems for the post-menopausal women. Various factors such as reduced Vitamin D levels and Estrogen levels as well as increased stress can contribute to development of these psychological complaints. Though these problems might look benign to the patients, they can severely impact the mental health and require more awareness amongst the patients to improve the mental as well as physical health in post-menopausal women.Women in the post-menopausal stage have increased predisposition towards developing psychological disorders and hence the assessment of mental health is essential in these females which should be a vital part of the evaluation done of these females.

The most widely used and clinically accepted biochemical marker for assessing vitamin D status is the total serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration. Despite the analysis of 25(OH)D dating back to the early 1970s, modern analytical techniques still exhibit significant interassay variability due to varying concentrations of other related vitamin D metabolites and sample-to-sample matrix differences. It is important for clinicians requesting 25(OH)D analyses to understand these issues and limitations, and where necessary to confront laboratories for details of analytical methods used. The availability of reference measurement procedures for 25(OH)D based on liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry, whilst not intended for routine clinical sample analysis, should be utilized to improve assay harmonization and reduce interlaboratory variability. Laboratories should also be forthcoming with details of subscriptions to external quality assessment schemes and assay traceability. As well as discussing the reasons for ongoing assay variability for 25(OH)D, this short review will also briefly discuss other assays related to the assessment of vitamin D status, including parathyroid hormone, 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D and vitamin D binding proteins.

The world’s health in 2020 was in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic and its adverse consequences and is still continuing in 2021. Most countries have been locked down or going through different forms of lockdown to prevent the transmission of the infectious virus SARS-CoV-2. To date, there is no specific treatment or vaccination preventive measures. World Health Organization has approved few vaccines for emergency use. Still, the emergence of mutations within SARS-CoV has put forward challenges for vaccine developers. Whether infectious or non-infectious, all diseases have an inflammatory aspect to alarm the body system along with an anti-inflammatory counterbalance mechanism to minimize harmful effects whether through immune modulation or antioxidant reserves. An approach to counteract the novel disease, COVID19, was also sought in enhancing the anti-inflammatory aspect, at the level of prevention and at the level of treatment. One of the methodologies was the recommendation of micronutrient Vitamin D whose immune-modulatory role has been well appreciated in many disease conditions. This short review aims to explore the relationship between vitamin D status through susceptibility and clinical outcomes of COVID-19.

Vitamin D is traditionally associated with the regulation of mineral metabolism and bone homeostasis, and its deficiency is the cause of diseases such as osteoporosis or osteomalacia. However, numerous studies in recent years suggest that thanks to the common expression of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) on the cells of the body and the related additional anti-inflammatory, immunomodulating, antioxidant, anti-fibrotic vitamin D effects, it may play a role in the development and progress of autoimmune diseases and tumors. The collected data suggest that low vitamin D levels correlate with the occurrence of autoimmune diseases of the thyroid gland and that there is a significant correlation between 25(OH)D and anti-TPO or anti-Tg levels. However, these data are inconclusive and further research is needed to confirm this relationship and determine whether lowered vitamin D titer is the cause or rather the consequence of autoimmune thyroid disorders, and whether vitamin D supplementation could prove to be an effective prophylaxis and treatment.

Presently the world is battling a deadly pandemic without any effective licenced drugs or biologics to vanquish SARSCoV-2. The experience of managing the past viral aetiological outbreaks has been extrapolated to nCOVID-19, yet its effectiveness is uncertain. This connotation invokes a potential insight to focus upon those elements and etiquettes which are an integral part of our life and expound for nCOVID-19 treatment. This further impels us to consider our food as a time-tested medicine. In a study, a decrease in Vitamin-D levels accounted for the bovine coronavirus infection in calves. Interestingly it paves the way for exploring the role of Vitamin-D as an accessible 'magic bullet' against nCOVID-19. Currently, its metabolism and immunomodulatory characterization are well-established. In fact, the studies have described an inverse relationship between Vitamin-D level and respiratory infections. This further substantiates for understanding its shielding effect against nCOVID-19. Few researchers have recommended dosage of Vitamin-D intake among adult and highrisk individuals including front-liners. However, the enforcement of this potent nutritional ergogenic calls for dose rationalisation with due effectivity and safety based on large randomized controlled trials. This short review highlights the important scientic link between Vitamin D levels and susceptibility to COVID-19 in patients.
