Abstract Purpose Recently we described mapping of the lingual nerve clinically in patients using electrical nerve stimulation. This paper reports results of a larger study with inter- and intra-observer reliability and comparison with positional measurements from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods In 50 healthy participants, measurements were taken when subjects felt a tingling sensation in the tongue induced by a stimulation probe over the lingual nerve. Three positions were measured in relation to the third molar. Measurement reliability was tested for both inter-observer and intra-observer agreement and positional data of the lingual nerve measured clinically was also compared with nerve position as measured from MRI scans. Results Out of 50 participants, 96 nerves (49 = left/47 = right) were included in the study. The lingual nerve was identified in 90% (87) of this sample. The mean of height of the nerve in points A, B and C were 9.64 mm, 10.77 mm and 12.34 respectively. Inter-and intra-observer agreement was considered to be good to excellent (ICC = 0.8–0.96). Agreement between nerve mapping measured values and MRI measured values was good (ICC < 0.6). Conclusion This technique may prove useful for the clinical determination of lingual nerve position prior to procedures in the third molar region.

Introduction. Optimal reconstruction of vertical dimension of occlusion is crucial for functional and physiognomic rehabilitation of edentulous patients. This article is aimed at presenting attitudes and studies on application of cephalometric analysis in obtaining optimal vertical dimension of occlusion. The review of literature presents the studies which analyse the possibilities of cephalometric analysis aimed at improving the clinical methods for vertical dimension of occlusion determination in treatment of edentulous patients. The research carried out so far can roughly be divided into: cephalometric vertical dimension of occlusion evaluation in dentulous patients performed to determine precise indicators of vertical dimension of occlusion and to establish cephalometric standards for practical application in prosthodontics; the method of producing pre-extraction cephalometric registries involves the production of cephalometric radiographs for potential prosthodontic patients in dental pre-extraction period which are kept for reference to be used in later therapy; the cephalometric method of registering the position of physiologic rest position of the mandible involves measuring cephalometric parameters in cephalometric radiographs made when the mandible is in physiologic rest position; cephalometric evaluation of vertical dimension of occlusion in complete denture therapy after clinical determination of intemaxillary relationship is recommended for timely detection of possible mistakes, with a possibility of correction in the process of complete denture production; and cephalometric analysis in edentulous patients with old complete dentures for a planned vertical dimension of occlusion extension. Conclusion. Data from the literature give no proof of a scientific and universally accepted method for precise determination of vertical dimension of occlusion, which is a point many authors agree upon. Different methods proposed for vertical dimension of occlusion determination in everyday practice are usually recommended in combination with other methods. Determination of individual, morphological vertical dimension of occlusion indicators by cephalometric analysis is, in this sense, one of the directions for finding a better solution when planning an artificial occlusion complex.

Abstract We developed an assay for methemalbumin in biological fluids by using diethylaminoethyl-Sephadex ion-exchange chromatography to separate this protein from interfering components, including hemopexin, transferrin, hemoglobin, and haptoglobin/hemoglobin complex. Initial screening of the samples requires measurement of A280/A405 ratios of the peak tubes of the isolated albumin fraction. Values exceeding 30 indicate that methemalbumin is absent, and no further work is required. Values of less than 30 suggest that methemalbumin is present in the original sample, whereupon the presence and amount of methemalbumin can be ascertained by colorimetric assay for iron with use of ferrozine. Results may be expressed either in terms of micrograms of methemalbumin iron per gram of albumin or in milligrams of methemalbumin per liter. The reproducibility of the method is of the order of ±7% (SD). Normal persons have essentially no methemalbumin iron in their serum. Three individuals with hemorrhagic pancreatitis showed values of 65, 98, and 198 µg of methemalbumin Fe per gram of albumin.
