AbstractLarge-scale comparative neuroscience requires data from many species and, ideally, at multiple levels of description. Here, we contribute to this endeavor by presenting diffusion and structural MRI data from eight primate species that have not or rarely been described in the literature. The selected samples from the Primate Brain Bank cover a prosimian, New and Old World monkeys, and a great ape. We present preliminary labelling of the cortical sulci and tractography of the optic radiation, dorsal part of the cingulum bundle, and dorsal parietal–frontal and ventral temporal-frontal longitudinal white matter tracts. Both dorsal and ventral association fiber systems could be observed in all samples, with the dorsal tracts occupying much less relative volume in the prosimian than in other species. We discuss the results in the context of known primate specializations and present hypotheses for further research. All data and results presented here are available online as a resource for the scientific community.

Post-disturbance salvage logging mitigates economic loss after windthrow, and the value of salvaged timber is strongly linked to its quality and dimensions. We studied the occurrence of wind-induced damage of aspen in the hemiboreal forests of Latvia based on data from the National Forest Inventory and additional measurements. Individual tree data from three re-measurement periods were linked to follow a tree condition (live, broken, uprooted) and to link tree characteristics to a respective snag. Three linear models were developed to assess factors affecting the snapping height. An assortment outcome was calculated for undamaged and salvaged trees using the bucking algorithm, and timber value was calculated at three price levels. Wind-induced damage occurred for 3.4–3.6% of aspen trees, and among these, 45.8–46.6% were broken. The mean height of the broken trees was 27.3 ± 0.9 m, and it was significantly higher (both p < 0.01) compared to the height of undamaged and uprooted trees. The tested models indicated tree height as the main explanatory variable for relative snapping height, with higher trees having a lower point of the stem breakage. The other significant factor was the forest type group, indicating that trees growing on dry mineral soils had lower relative snapping height than trees growing on drained mineral soils. Stem breakage significantly (p < 0.001) reduced the volume of assortments, as compared to the volume of undamaged trees. Relative volume loss of sawlogs showed a logarithmic trend with a steep increase up to snapping height of 6 m, and it correlated tightly (r = 0.83, p < 0.001) with relative value loss of the total stem. Timber value loss had a strong, positive relation to tree diameter at breast height and fluctuated by 0.4% among different price levels. The mean volume reduction was 37.7% for sawlogs, 11.0% for pallet blocks, and 8.9% for technological wood.

AbstractVariable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry has been used to characterize Cu(InGa)Se2 thin films as a function of relative Ga content and to study the effects of Cu off-stoichiometry. Uniform Cu(InGa)Se2 films were deposited on Mo-coated soda lime glass substrates by elemental evaporation with a wide range of relative Cu and Ga concentrations. Optical constants of Cu(InGa)Se2 were determined over the energy range of 0.75–C4.6 eV for films with 0 ≤ Ga/(In+Ga) ≤ 1 and used to determine electronic transition energies. Further, the changes in the optical constants and electronic transitions as a function of Cu off-stoichiometry were determined in Cu-In-Ga-Se films with Cu atomic concentration varying from 10 to 25 % and Ga/(In+Ga) = 0.3. Films with Cu in the range 16–24 % are expected to contain 2 phases so an effective medium approximation is used to model the data. This enables the relative volume fractions of the two phases, and hence composition, to be determined. Two distinctive features are observed in the optical spectra as the Cu concentration decreases. First, the fundamental bandgaps are shifted to higher energies. Second, the critical point features at higher energies become broader suggesting degradation of the crystalline quality of the material.

Anadromy of nine lake populations of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) in northern Norway was scored on the following criteria: prevalence of marine parasites, fish size, and size at maturity. In general, anadromy dominated in shallow lakes and residency dominated in deep lakes. The anadromy scores of the populations were significantly higher in lakes without a profundal zone compared with lakes with a profundal zone. There was also a significant negative correlation between the relative volume of the profundal zone (RPV) and the degree of anadromy and between RPV and mean parr length at ages 2+ and 3+. However, differences in parr growth could not explain all the observed variation in anadromy, and the correlation between mean parr length at ages 2+ and 3+ and the degree of anadromy in the different populations was not significant. In addition to the effect on parr growth, lake morphology seemed to influence the degree of anadromy through the relative size of different habitats, which in turn affects the number of available niches. The parr weight/length relationship and infection with the freshwater parasites Phyllodistomum umblae and Diphyllobothrium spp. did not affect the degree of anadromy.

Sustained arterial hypertension developed in male, albino rats chronically fed diets rich in sodium chloride with demineralized drinking water available ad libitum. After 12 months of the experimental regimen a positive, linear correlation (r = 0.91) was found between the systolic blood pressure and the concentration of sodium chloride in the diet. A syndrome of edema and renal failure was observed in 18 per cent of the group fed at the level of 7.0 to 9.8 per cent of sodium chloride. Significant histologic changes occurred in the kidneys and certain other organs in rats consuming rations containing these levels of NaCl. The relative volume of the radiosodium space was increased in the rat by high dietary sodium chloride.

A computerized image analysis package (ImagePro+) was evaluated as an alternative method for morphometric analysis of electron micrographs of microalgal cells. The morphometric analysis was demonstrated with micrographs of the marine alga Nannochloropsis sp. grown under high and low light intensity. We applied the ImagePro+ package to estimate the relative volume of an organelle based on the ratio of perimeters of the organelle and the cell. The measurements included the volumes of chloroplasts, mitochondria, nuclei, vacuoles, and accumulation bodies, all relative to cell volume. The length of thylakoids was measured using the same package. The results obtained by ImagePro+ were compared to those of the traditional manual and laborious method involving the superimposition of an array of short lines on the micrograph. A high correlation between the methods was found. The following correlations were found for chloroplast, nucleus, and accumulation bodies: 0.96, 0.92, and 0.75, respectively. The correlation between length of thylakoids (ImagePro+) and surface area of thylakoids (superimposition) was 0.82.


Observations by electron microscopy on thin sections of the metatarsal tendon of embryonic fowls show that in the 8-day embryo the earliest definable collagen fibrils of 80 Å in diameter are intimately associated with the cytoplasm of the compact, apparently syncytial, cells of which the tendon rudiment is composed. As development proceeds, some intracytoplasmic groups of fibrils are distinguishable, but intercellular spaces also develop and these gradually become filled with fibrils; finally, bundles are formed and lie packed between the adjacent cells. Soon the extracellular organization predominates until at 20days the average diameter of the fibrils is 400 Å and the normal 640 Å periodicity of collagen has been achieved. The morphological features demonstrated have been correlated with histochemical data, and the possible function of the various cellular components in the formation of the intercellular substance has been discussed. By the use of sections in which fibrils have been cut exactly transverse to the bundle axis it has been shown that each fibril is invested by interfibrillar material. As the diameter of the fibrils increases with age the relative volume of interfibrillar material within a bundle diminishes; it is therefore concluded that this material must contain either collagen or the necessary precursors in order to account for the enlargement of the fibrils. Thus the interfibrillar material is of fundamental importance to the formation and growth of the collagen fibrils.

The ratio of ray and ray cell initials to fusiform initials of the vascular cambium relative to radial growth rate as reflected in the secondary xylem was studied in stems of Acer saccharum Marsh. Ray initials increased in size as they aged, slowly when growth rate was low, rapidly when it was high, but there was little fluctuation in the number of rays per unit of tangential area; as the cambium increased in circumference, the older, larger rays diverged and new small rays arose in intervening areas, thus maintaining a uniform unit area population independent of growth rate. However, since ray size increased rapidly when growth rate was high, the unit area population of ray cells rose abruptly with accelerating growth rate: the relative volume of xylem ray tissue rose from 8.6 to 12.7% of the total xylem volume when annual ring width increased from 1 to 7 mm. When fast growth was not maintained, the unit area population of ray cells declined slowly as the large rays diverged.

Background: Manual segment target volumes were time-consuming and inter-observer variability couldn’t be avoided. With the development of computer science, auto-segmentation had the potential to solve this problem. Objective: To evaluate the accuracy and stability of Atlas-based and deep-learning-based auto-segmentation of the intermediate risk clinical target volume, composed of CTV2 and CTVnd, for nasopharyngeal carcinoma quantitatively. Methods and Materials: A cascade-deep-residual neural network was constructed to automatically segment CTV2 and CTVnd by deep learning method. Meanwhile, a commercially available software was used to automatically segment the same regions by Atlas-based method. The datasets included contrast computed tomography scans from 102 patients. For each patient, the two regions were manually delineated by one experienced physician. The similarity between the two auto-segmentation methods was quantitatively evaluated by Dice similarity coefficient, the 95th Hausdorff distance, volume overlap error and relative volume difference, respectively. Statistical analyses were performed using the ranked Wilcoxon test. Results: The average Dice similarity coefficient (±standard deviation) given by the deep-learning-based and Atlas-based auto-segmentation were 0.84(±0.03) and 0.74(±0.04) for CTV2, 0.79(±0.02) and 0.68(±0.03) for CTVnd, respectively. For the 95th Hausdorff distance, the corresponding values were 6.30±3.55mm and 9.34±3.39mm for CTV2, 7.09±2.27mm and 14.33±3.98mm for CTVnd. Besides, volume overlap error and relative volume difference could also predict the same situations. Statistical analyses showed significant difference between the two auto-segmentation methods (p<0.01). Conclusions: Compared with the Atlas-based segmentation approach, the deep-learning-based segmentation method performed better both in accuracy and stability for meaningful anatomical areas other than organs at risk.
