Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of legal blindness in developed countries. The decrease in central vision, metamorphopsia, and central scotoma affect the reading capacity even in the early stages of the disease. In the historical point of treatment for age-related macular degeneration, laser treatment, radiation treatment, and photodynamic therapy have been used. Today, drugs that inhibit the vascular endothelial growth factor are used widely. In this article, we will discuss the treatment modalities that were used widely before the era of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor drugs.
