Pd(ll) and Pt(ll) complexes of three series of Schiff thiobases derived from 2- carbonylpyridine have been synthesized and characterized. The crystal structure of the Pt(ll) derivative of methyl-3-(2-pyridylmethylene)hydrazinecarbodithioate (HFp) was resolved. The ligand coordinates the platinum ion in tridentate fashion by heterocycle and imine nitrogen and thiocarbonyl sulfur. The fourth ligand is a chloride ion. The structure of the complexes is suitable for the formation of monofunctional adducts with DNA. Studies on the interaction of the complexes with Calf thymus DNA by CD reveal modifications in the B form of lineal DNA. Interaction with plasmid DNA was also confirmed in the images obtained by atomic force microscopy.

Surface morphology of the {001} faces of MMTWD crystals grown from by the temperature-lowering method has been studied. Monolayer and multilayer steps elongate along the a direction, which is determined by the crystal structure. Apart from that, the elementary steps have narrower terraces than the bunched ones, which may be resulting from the faster growth rates of the former than the latter. The formation of the protuberances at the step fronts is primarily associated with the uneven growth rates. The hollow cavities also elongate along the a direction, which demonstrates that the formation of them is also restricted by the crystal structure. Cracks are supposed to occur during harvesting, handling, or temperature stress afterwards. Growth of the 3D hillocks in high density can probably cause large stress and induce structure mismatch and serious cracks at the later stage.

Three different methods were used to roughen brass (Cu/Zn = 67/33) electrodes in 0.5 M H2SO4 containing 1.0 mM benzotriazole (BTAH): (1) polarization at +0.05 V vs. saturated calomel for 5 min; (2) immersion in the above solution for six hours; and (3) oxidation-reduction cycling in the presence of chloride ion. The surfaces prepared by the first two methods exhibited surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of the polymeric complex [Cu(I)BTA] n. The SERS spectrum obtained from electrodes prepared by the third method is very similar to that of [CU(I)C1BTAH]4. Examination of the electrodes by atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed that a large number of grain boundary sites are formed by the roughening processes. This effect is attributed to the loss of zinc, which occurs during corrosion of the mirror-like, polished brass electrode surface in the sulfuric acid solution.

The DNA interaction properties of four Ru(ii) complexes with imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline derivatives were investigated by spectral titration, gel electrophoresis (GAR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
