CO in a supersonic pulsed beam is excited to the d3Δi state by VUV photons generated in a nonlinear four-wave mixing scheme. An excitation spectrum of the CO d3Δi (ν′ = 20, J′ = 1–3) is obtained at a resolution of 0.8 cm−1 for the first time. The radiative lifetimes of the rotational states are measured as 1.70 ± 0.08 μs, which are similar to but shorter than the lifetimes associated with lower vibrational levels.

Luminescence, induced absorption and degenerate four-wave mixing experiments are perform on GaN epilayers grown on a sapphire substrate by MOCVD.We measure the nonlinear behavior of the luminescence spectra near the excitonic resonance, by using an excitation at 4.026 eV from an excimer laser. At low intensities of excitation, spectra show a saturation of the I2 line due to the finite donor density in the sample. Higher intensities of excitation induce collision processes between photo-created quasi-particles.Using a dye laser as a pump beam, we measure the induced variation of absorption of a probe beam as a function of the intensity and of the wavelength of the excitation. With increasing intensities of the pump beam, transmission spectra show a red-shift of the absorption edge and of the excitonic resonance.Pulsed degenerate four-wave mixing experiments were performed using the third harmonic of a picosecond Nd-YAG laser at 3.492 eV. A characteristic time constant of 16 ps has been measured, which is independent of the temperature, spacing of the interference fringe and of the intensity of the pump beams.

Semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is among one of the most promising candidate for all optical computation and communication technology implementation. An all optical multiplexer and demultiplexer utilizing SOA-based dual pump four-wave mixing is proposed and explained. A multiplexer and demultiplexer are very important device for both optical computation and communication system and find variety of applications. In this communication, a multiplexer and a demultiplexer are proposed using frequency encoded format. Two very simple but interesting applications of demultiplexer one as decoder of two-bit frequency encoded numbers and another as comparator of frequency encoded single-bit numbers are presented for the first time in this communication. The devices proposed here can show ultra fast speed of operation and compact with advantages of using frequency-encoding technique for representing states of information.
