Cm-p5 is a snail-derived antimicrobial peptide, which demonstrated antifungal activity against the pathogenic strains of Candida albicans. Previously we synthetized a cyclic monomer as well as a parallel and an antiparallel dimer of Cm-p5 with improved antifungal activity. Considering the alarming increase of microbial resistance to conventional antibiotics, here we evaluated the antimicrobial activity of these derivatives against multiresistant and problematic bacteria and against important viral agents. The three peptides showed a moderate activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae Extended Spectrum β-Lactamase (ESBL), and Streptococcus agalactiae, with MIC values > 100 µg/mL. They exerted a considerable activity with MIC values between 25–50 µg/mL against Acinetobacter baumanii and Enterococcus faecium. In addition, the two dimers showed a moderate activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA14. The three Cm-p5 derivatives inhibited a virulent extracellular strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, they inhibited Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV-2) infection in a concentration-dependent manner, but had no effect on infection by the Zika Virus (ZIKV) or pseudoparticles of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). At concentrations of >100 µg/mL, the three new Cm-p5 derivatives showed toxicity on different eukaryotic cells tested. Considering a certain cell toxicity but a potential interesting activity against the multiresistant strains of bacteria and HSV-2, our compounds require future structural optimization.

Co(II) complex of 5-chloro-2,4-dihydroxy butyrophenoneoxime (CDHBOX) was synthesized from 5-chloro-2,4-dihydroxy butyrophenoneoxime by using standard protocol, and characterized by elemental analyses, melting point determination and spectral data. The ML2 (metal/ligand) stoichiometry of the complex was determined by spectrophotometric and potentiometric studies, and mass spectral data. The value of stability constant of the complex was found to be 6.94x 108 while its standard free energy of formation is 12.155 kcal/mol at 27ºC. Beer’s law is obeyed in the concentration range 2-15 ppm of Co. The value of molar extinction coefficient and sensitivity as per Sandell’s scale were found to 3.35x 103 L.mol-1cm-1and 0.017 μg Co/cm2 respectively. The value of activation energy and the Arrhenius constant Arrhenius constant were found as 4.949 kjmol-1, 74.39. The IR studies reveal that the phenolic proton is lost on complexation and the oxygen of the phenolic (–OH) and nitrogen of the oximino (=NOH) groups coordinate with Co(II) ion. The electronic spectra and magnetic susceptibility measurement indicate that the complex is paramagnetic and tetrahedral in nature. The antimicrobial activity of different concentrations of ligand and its Co(II)-complex  has been evaluated against Curvularia lunata, Fusarium oxysporum and Alternaria alternata fungi  and Streproproteus, Staph, Escherchia coli, Klebsella, and pseudomonas bacteria. The results indicated that the ligand (CDHBOX) and its Co(II) complex have good anti-microbial properties.

Nʹ-Nicotinoyl sulfonohydrazide derivatives 3-13 were synthesized from nicotinyl hydrazide and evaluated for their antimicrobial potential against Gram positive bacterial strains (Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Staphylococcus fecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, and MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)) and Gram negative bacterial strains (Escherichia.coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella ParatyphiB, Salmonella tyhpi). Compound 13 showed outstanding antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus fecalis and compounds 7 and 13 were found to be moderately activite against Salmonella Paratyphi B, shown by their zone of inhibition values. In addition to that compond 9 also showed moderate activity against Escherichia coli. All derivatives 3-13 were also subjected for the evaluation of their antifungal activity against Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Microsporum canin, Rhizopus, Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, and Candida tropicalis. Compound 13 showed promising antifungal activity against Rhizopus sp. and compounds 9 and 10 showed moderate antifungal potential against Microsporum canis, Aspergillus niger, and Candida tropicalis. Other molecules demonstrated weak zone of inhibitions.

Certain complex compounds were synthesized by the interaction of Mg(II), Ca(II) and Fe(III) halides with the solvent extracting reagent, Cyanex-272 i.e. bis (2,4,4- trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid as ligand. All the prepared complexes have been characterized on the basis of their molar masses, conductivity, magnetic measurements and infrared and electronic spectral studies. The other physico-chemical properties e.g. colour, decomposition temperature have also been ascertained. Key words: Chanex-272 Bangladesh J. Sci. Ind. Res. 42(4), 475-482, 2007

New metal complexes of Mg(II), VO(II), Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Pd(II) with cyanex 301(L) i.e., bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) dithiophosphinic acid were synthesized. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivity, molecular mass determination, magnetic measurements, infrared and electronic spectral studies. The prepared metal complexes have the compositions: 2. [MgL2].H2O, 3. [VOL2], 4. K[MnL3].H2O, 5. [FeL3], 6. K[CoL3].H2O, 7. K[NiL3], 8. K[CuL3] and 9. [PdL2]. The complexes 2, 3 and 9 are assumed to have tetrahedral, square pyramidal and square planar geometries, respectively but the complexes 4 - 8 are octahedral based on experimental data. From magnetic measurements the complexes 2 and 9 are found to be diamagnetic and others are paramagnetic. Measured molar conductance showed that the complexes 2, 3, 5 and 9 are non-electrolytes and rest are electrolytes. Besides, some complexes have shown good antibacterial and antifungal activities. The reactions of bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanium(IV) dichloride with a new class of thiosemicarbazone (LH2), derived by condensing isatin with different N(4)-substituted thiosemicarbazides, have been studied and products of type [Cp2Ti(L)] have been isolated. On the basis of various physico-chemical and spectral studies, five coordinate structures have been assigned to these derivatives. Toxicity studies of titanocene complexes at tbur different concentrations have been carried out against snailLymnaea acuminata. The effect of most potent compounds on the activity of acetylcholinesterase enzyme, which inhibits the activity of enzyme, possibly by the formation of enzyme-inhibitor complex, was also studied.

5-Chloromethyl-8-quinolinol was condensed stoichiometrically with 5-(4-chlorophenyl)-(1,3,4) thiadiazol-2-ylamine in the presence of sodium bicarbonate. The resulting 5-[4-chlorophenyl-(1,3,4)thiadiazol-2-ylamino methylene]-8-quinolinol (CTAQ) was characterized by elemental analysis and spectral studies. The transition metal chelatesviz. Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Mn2+and Zn2+of CTAQ were prepared and characterized by metal-ligand (M:L) ratio, IR and reflectance spectroscopies and magnetic properties. The antifungal activity of CTAQ and its metal chelates was screened against various fungi. The results show that all these samples are good antifungal agents.
